For Alexander’s three normal raid tiers in Final Fantasy XIV, the average item-level entry requirements are 170 for Gordias, 200 for Midas, and 230 for The Creator. Each tier is a level 60 duty. Savage has separate, higher requirements, so the right number depends on which tier and mode you are queuing for.
Normal Alexander item-level requirements
“Gear level” here means your average item level, not your character level. These are the published minimums for entering each normal raid tier through ordinary duty registration.

The minimum is an entry gate, not a recommended level for a comfortable clear. The cited requirements are historical progression gates; if your current queue screen shows a different rule, use the live Duty Finder display.
Savage requirements are different
Do not use the normal-mode number when entering Savage. Square Enix’s patch notes list separate minimum average item levels by floor:

Access rules have changed over time: an earlier Midas Savage note did not list an item-level requirement, while Patch 3.3 did. The Lodestone Eorzea Database, identified as Patch 7.56 when checked, lists Alexander duty item levels and notes that restrictions may be lifted for groups meeting minimum-size requirements (Lodestone Eorzea Database). Check the current Duty Finder entry for the precise rule that applies to your queue.
What the item-level gate does—and does not—tell you
Average item level determines whether ordinary duty registration permits entry. Meeting it does not certify that a character is ideally equipped or guarantee that a group will clear easily; the official figures above establish entry requirements, not a comfortable-clear recommendation.

How normal-mode Alexander gear is obtained
Normal-mode Alexander rewards were designed around tokens or exchange items rather than a selected gear piece dropping directly from the coffer. Square Enix’s Patch 3.01 notes explain: “Treasure coffers that appear upon completing Alexander: Gordias will not yield gear, but instead yield tokens that can be traded for gear of your choosing.” The Midas and Creator patch notes likewise describe exchange-based rewards. This is relevant when planning progression: the raid can provide a route to gear, but its entry gate is based on the average item level you already have.
