It is a game, and a game is not a person. The phrase “What gender is Minecraft?” usually means one of three different things, and the official answers differ for each. Mobs have a clear rule in Microsoft’s documentation. Steve and Alex are defined by appearance, not by a canonical gender. The game as a whole is simply not gendered.
Three questions hidden in one phrase
Readers asking this question tend to mean one of three things. Keeping them apart avoids most of the confusion.
| What the reader means | What official sources establish |
|---|---|
| Is the game itself gendered? | No. Minecraft is described by Minecraft’s own overview as a game. |
| Do the creatures (mobs) have genders? | Microsoft’s Minecraft Bedrock documentation style guide sets a language rule: mobs use gender-neutral pronouns unless they have a specified gender. |
| Are the default player figures Steve and Alex male or female? | Not settled as canon. Official material describes their skins and model differences as appearance and customization. |
Is Minecraft itself gendered?
No. Minecraft is a sandbox game in which players build, explore, and survive in a procedurally generated world. A game has no sex or gender identity, so the question only becomes meaningful when it is applied to characters or creatures inside it.
Do Minecraft mobs have genders?
Mobs are the creatures that populate the world, such as zombies, cows, and villagers. Microsoft’s Minecraft Bedrock documentation guidance, published through Microsoft Learn in its Contributor Style Guide, addresses this directly:

“Mob pronouns: mobs in Minecraft use gender-neutral pronouns unless they have a specified gender.”
This is an institutional writing instruction from the Minecraft documentation team, not a statement by a named person and not a broader claim about biology or lore. Its practical effect is that writers should default to “it” for a mob unless a specific gender has been assigned to that mob. The rule carries an explicit exception, so it should not be stretched into a universal declaration that every creature in the game is genderless in every context.

Are Steve and Alex male or female?
Steve and Alex are the default player-character appearances. Most of the confusion comes from their names and the visual features players associate with them, but official material does not assign either one a canonical gender.
Steve
Minecraft’s “What is a Minecraft Skin?” explainer, published June 5, 2023, describes Steve’s model as the “classic” model, with arms four pixels wide. That is a description of the model’s proportions, not a statement about gender.

Alex
The same explainer describes Alex’s model as the “slim” model, with arms three pixels wide. Again, this is a difference in model geometry. It is not evidence that Alex is a girl or woman.
Why visual coding is not canon
The official skin material describes skins as changing the appearance of the player’s in-game character, and it says players can choose default or custom appearances. Treating a skin’s look, or a third-party description, as proof of a character’s identity goes beyond what Minecraft has stated. Reading the names and proportions as gender markers is an interpretation that readers bring to the game, not something the developer has confirmed.

Newer default skins
Minecraft has also introduced seven additional default skins alongside Steve and Alex: Noor, Sunny, Ari, Zuri, Makena, Kai, and Efe. The announcement, “Introducing New Default Minecraft Skins,” frames them as appearance choices and does not label any of them by gender. The announcement page was checked in 2026, but the page extract does not confirm its original publication year, so no launch date is given here.

Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ describes customization as visual. Players can change how their character looks, and the FAQ says they may continue using Alex or Steve. The page may still contain references to older platforms, so check the current in-game options and platform availability rather than relying on that page for what is offered on your device.

What official sources establish and what they do not
- Established: Minecraft is a game, so the game itself has no gender.
- Established: Microsoft’s Minecraft Bedrock documentation guidance uses gender-neutral pronouns for mobs unless a specific gender is specified.
- Established: Steve and Alex differ in model proportions, with four-pixel and three-pixel arms, and both are customizable appearances.
- Established: Seven additional default skins exist, and Minecraft does not label them by gender.
- Not established: any canonical gender for Steve or Alex. No named official statement assigns one.
- Not established: a universal gender for all mobs. The style rule covers writing, and its exception allows a specified gender.
Anyone quoting Minecraft on this topic should keep the game, the mobs, and the default player figures separate, and attribute each claim to the source that actually makes it.
