Sinnoh is associated with Generation IV. The region debuted in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl in 2006; Pokémon Platinum is a version based on those games.

Which games introduced Sinnoh?

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, released for Nintendo DS, introduced the region. The Pokémon Company International says, “In 2006, Trainers were introduced to the Sinnoh region with the release of the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl games on the Nintendo DS system.” (The Pokémon Company International, February 26, 2021.) That original pairing is why Sinnoh is identified with Generation IV.

Is Pokémon Platinum also a Sinnoh game?

Yes. Pokémon Platinum is a version based on Diamond and Pearl, and its adventure takes place in Sinnoh. It belongs to the same Generation IV group as those games. (The Pokémon Company Japan; Nintendo UK.)

Are Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Generation IV games?

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are later remakes based on the original Diamond and Pearl, and their story is set in Sinnoh. They revisit a Generation IV region, but they are remakes rather than the original 2006 releases. (The Pokémon Company.)

Why can a Sinnoh setting appear in a later game?

A region’s generation label identifies its place in the series’ original release history; it does not mean every later game set there is itself an original Generation IV release. Sinnoh debuted in the Generation IV Diamond and Pearl; later games can return to the region or retell its story without changing that origin.
