The planned opening arc was four issues, but Mann treated that as an initial stage rather than a promise about the eventual length of the wider comic line.
Why the comic needed a new story
The central adaptation decision was not to retell a major event from a game or explain the established mythology in exhaustive detail. Mann said the creative team feared that doing so could spoil the pleasure of discovering the world through investigation. In his words, “Firstly, there’s a risk that we could give too much away – after all, the point of the games is to explore and investigate and discover that story for yourself, so if we delved too deep into it with our comic we might have detracted from that experience.”

That choice protects a defining feature of Dark Souls: the player is rarely handed a complete account of what happened. Meaning is assembled from environments, enemy encounters, item descriptions, visual details and brief conversations. A comic cannot reproduce player-controlled exploration exactly, so Mann looked for another way to preserve the feeling of discovery. An original plot could introduce mysteries without resolving questions that players might prefer to investigate in the games themselves.
Mann gave a second reason for avoiding a direct expansion of established events: a new story allowed the team to surprise readers. He described the aim as an original narrative “rooted in the tone of the games,” with room to play with expectations rather than simply illustrate familiar lore. The result was intended to feel like a Dark Souls story without functioning as a plot summary of Dark Souls.

How a game’s hidden lore becomes a readable comic
Games can make a silent protagonist’s journey compelling because the player supplies curiosity and chooses where to look. A printed comic has to guide every reader through a fixed sequence of pages. Mann’s solution was to build the first arc around two people whose needs and knowledge pull the story forward.
Fira is the fighter
Fira is the warrior at the center of the action. She can confront the physical dangers of the setting, but her condition creates an immediate dramatic problem: the undead curse is causing her memory to fade. Her declining memory is not just background mythology; it threatens her ability to understand her own mission and history. That gives the comic a personal question to follow alongside its larger mysteries.
Aldrich is the guide
Aldrich supplies what Fira lacks. Mann described him as possessing arcane knowledge and a functioning memory, making him her guide through a world she can no longer reliably interpret. His role is not simply to deliver exposition. Because he knows more than Fira, readers can learn from him, but because the comic is built around an emerging narrative, his knowledge does not automatically amount to a complete explanation.

Mann presented Fira and Aldrich as mutually necessary. Fira brings the combat ability required to survive; Aldrich brings the knowledge needed to identify what their journey means. Their relationship gives the comic a viewpoint structure that the games can avoid. Instead of asking readers to project themselves into a mostly silent avatar, the series can show disagreement, dependence, uncertainty and the consequences of one character remembering what the other has forgotten.

The first arc was also designed to reveal what set the pair on their path. That promise places their personal history before any assumption that the comic will settle every question about the wider Dark Souls universe. The immediate mystery is why these two characters are travelling together and what they are trying to accomplish, while the setting supplies larger secrets around them.
The tone: bleak, indirect and open to interpretation
Mann wanted the comic to retain the games’ bleak undercurrent. He described a world in which everything feels lost and the apparent heroes are among the last survivors moving through fading light. That description explains why the series is not merely an action comic with dark scenery. The danger is existential: even a successful fight may only postpone a broader collapse.
He called the approach an “emerging narrative,” meaning that important information would not be supplied at the start in a neat explanation. Mann said, “I was very keen to carry that over into the comics, so that readers need to do a bit of digging and interpretation to work out what’s really going on, and what secrets are yet to be revealed.” Readers should therefore expect clues, partial accounts and visual implications rather than a single page that translates the setting’s mythology into plain language.

One line in the published interview reads, “I love the emerging narrative, and how everything is spoon-fed to you upfront.” The wording appears inconsistent with the surrounding answer, which emphasizes that information is not spoon-fed. If quoted, it is best retained exactly as printed and read alongside Mann’s immediately following explanation of digging and interpretation. The broader point is clear: the comic was intended to make readers work for its meaning.

What the opening arc was expected to contain
Mann stated, “The first arc spans four issues. We’ll have to see how things develop after that.” In the context of the April 2016 interview, this is an expectation for the initial storyline, not a confirmed count for every Dark Souls comic published later. The four-issue plan gives the opening journey a defined shape while leaving the continuation of the line open.
Within those issues, the story was expected to establish Fira and Aldrich’s circumstances, show what sent them on their quest and progressively expose the secrets around them. Mann did not describe the arc as a retelling of a particular game campaign. Its function was to introduce a new pair of protagonists into a recognizable kind of world and let the consequences of their personal quest widen toward Ishra and its other survivors.
Is the comic set during Dark Souls 1?
No definitive chronology was provided. CGMagazine asked whether a familiar cameo meant that the story took place during the first game’s period. Mann answered, “I’ll leave that for readers to decide!” TheXboxHub’s contemporaneous Q&A likewise reports that he kept the timing open.
That answer is an intentional limit, not evidence that the comic is secretly confirmed as a side story occurring at a precise point in the first game. A cameo can invite a continuity theory, but the interview does not establish a date, a fixed overlap with the game’s events or a canonical placement on a single timeline. Readers can interpret the clues, but a firm chronology would go beyond what Mann said.

How the comic and games use different storytelling tools
The adaptation works by translating functions rather than copying mechanics. The following comparison reflects the creative problem Mann described:

This is why the comic’s originality is not a rejection of the games. New protagonists let it preserve uncertainty while still giving a sequential narrative enough emotional structure to carry readers from one scene to the next.

A separate April 2016 Q&A with TheXboxHub adds production context. Mann identified himself as the writer, while Alan Quah identified himself as the artist; Komikaki Studio handled coloring. Quah said the team studied the games’ environments, fights, character designs and bosses to carry their dark, gritty mood into the comic.

That preparation matters because visual fidelity in a Dark Souls adaptation is more than reproducing armor or monsters. The spaces need to communicate age, danger and decay; fights need to feel weighty rather than cleanly heroic; and bosses need to appear as part of a coherent mythology instead of as disconnected set pieces. Quah’s comments describe an effort to use the games as visual and tonal reference while Mann’s script supplied a different narrative route.

TheXboxHub interview also characterized Fira and Aldrich’s story as personal while giving it consequences for the wider world of Ishra. That combination helps explain the scale of the opening arc: the reader follows two people with immediate problems, but their choices are not isolated from the fate of the setting.
How much control did the game publisher exert?
When asked about restrictions from Bandai Namco, Mann replied, “Very little! They’ve been brilliant to work with. They’ve seen all of the material and have been very encouraging all the way through the process.” His answer describes a collaborative licensing relationship rather than a process dominated by heavy creative intervention.
That does not mean the comic is independent of the license. It remains an official adaptation shaped by the need to respect the games’ identity, visual language and recognizable elements. Mann’s comment does mean that, in his account, the publisher’s review process did not prevent the team from creating original protagonists or choosing an unresolved timeline.

Finding the collected story
Titan Comics’ catalog identifies the original series and its Fira-and-Aldrich storyline, while a later catalog entry lists a George Mann Dark Souls volume as a 112-page softcover and points readers toward retailer listings. Catalog information does not establish that a particular first-arc edition is currently in stock, so check the title, contents and format before buying. A later Mann volume such as The Willow King is adjacent reading, not the Fira and Aldrich story discussed in this interview.
Why the interview still matters
Mann’s answers provide a useful explanation of what an adaptation can preserve when it cannot reproduce the player’s exact experience. The comic does not try to reveal every established event, pin a cameo to a date or replace the games’ investigation with a lore lecture. Instead, it uses two original characters to make uncertainty readable on the page.
Fira’s failing memory and Aldrich’s knowledge create a built-in tension between action and interpretation. Their journey can move through fights, ruins and revelations while still withholding the complete answer. The bleak setting supplies the emotional pressure, and the unresolved chronology leaves space for readers to debate how the story connects to the games.
That is the clearest statement of the comic’s purpose in the 2016 conversation: offer a new story that feels like Dark Souls, trusts readers to interpret what they see and preserves the games’ discoveries instead of spending them all at once.
