Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor roughly the same 1080p rasterized gaming performance as a desktop GeForce GTX 1650 Super, look first for an AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB or an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. The RX 5500 XT 8GB offers more VRAM but usually needs more power. The GTX 1060 6GB is an older, close Nvidia match. A GTX 1660 is a worthwhile step up, while an RTX 3050 or RX 6600 should be considered for newer features or a genuine upgrade rather than as exact equivalents.
“Equivalent” can mean similar frame rates, power use, VRAM, price, features, or physical compatibility. Those definitions do not produce the same winner, so the comparisons below separate gaming performance from practical replacement concerns.
The closest GTX 1650 Super equivalents
| GPU | Relationship | VRAM | Power and compatibility considerations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce GTX 1060 6GB | Roughly equivalent in tested older raster games | 6GB GDDR5 | Older hardware; condition, cooling and warranty matter | Low-cost Nvidia-style replacement |
| Radeon RX 5500 XT 4GB | Close performance, but less attractive memory capacity | 4GB GDDR6 | Often higher power draw than the 1650 Super | Only when substantially cheaper |
| Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB | Closest AMD match overall | 8GB GDDR6 | Many boards need an 8-pin connector and a stronger PSU | Similar 1080p speed with more VRAM |
| Radeon RX 580 8GB | Comparable class, but inconsistent by game | 8GB GDDR5 | Much higher power, heat and noise; old used cards are risky | Very cheap systems with adequate power supplies |
| GeForce GTX 1660 | Noticeably faster step-up | 6GB GDDR5 | Usually straightforward compatibility, but check the board model | Better replacement when priced close to a 1650 Super |
| GeForce GTX 1660 Super | Clearer step up, not an equivalent | 6GB GDDR6 | Used prices can be disproportionate | Higher-performance 1080p gaming |
| GeForce RTX 3050 6GB | Feature-era alternative; model-specific performance | 6GB GDDR6 | Nvidia’s reference design is 70W with no supplementary connector | Low-power OEM systems needing newer features |
| GeForce RTX 3050 8GB | Newer-feature alternative, generally faster | 8GB GDDR6 | 130W reference power and a 550W recommended system rating | DLSS, ray tracing and Nvidia encoder features |
| Radeon RX 6600 | Modern upgrade, not a like-for-like match | 8GB GDDR6 | Verify PSU, connector, case clearance and airflow | Meaningful performance and VRAM upgrade |
Board-partner specifications vary. AMD’s specification database lists RX 5500 XT cards with 4GB or 8GB of GDDR6, a 128-bit bus and memory speeds up to 14Gbps; many models list a 500W recommended PSU. Check the exact card, not only the GPU name: AMD partner graphics-card specifications.

Aggregate sites can disagree. PassMark’s comparison, updated in August 2026, places the GTX 1660 above the GTX 1650 Super and the RX 5500 XT somewhat below it in its own compute-oriented aggregate. That difference illustrates why no single synthetic ranking should be presented as universal game FPS: PassMark comparison.

GTX 1650 Super versus RX 5500 XT
Why the 8GB model is the better match
The RX 5500 XT 8GB is the closest AMD substitute for ordinary 1080p rasterized gaming. Its extra memory does not double performance, but it can prevent texture-streaming problems and stutter when a game exceeds 4GB, and it allows higher texture settings in some titles. The 4GB version has similar core performance but is a weaker long-term purchase unless it is substantially cheaper.
The trade-off is power
Many RX 5500 XT add-in boards use more power than the roughly 100W GTX 1650 Super and require an auxiliary PCIe connector. Confirm the PSU’s wattage, quality and available 6-pin or 8-pin cable before buying. Used cards also deserve inspection for fan noise, overheating and modified firmware.

GTX 1650 Super versus GTX 1060 6GB
The GTX 1060 6GB is the closest older Nvidia equivalent in tested rasterized gaming and supplies 2GB more VRAM. It is a Pascal-era card, however, so age matters: a worn fan, degraded thermal compound, missing shroud or short warranty can outweigh a small benchmark difference. Choose it when the card is significantly cheaper or when Nvidia software continuity is important.
Is the GTX 1660 an equivalent?
No—treat the GTX 1660 as a step-up replacement. Nvidia’s comparison lists 1,408 CUDA cores, 6GB of memory and a 192-bit interface for the GTX 1660 versus 1,280 cores, 4GB and 128-bit for the GTX 1650 Super: Nvidia comparison specifications. It remains a sensible choice when its actual price is only modestly higher, but it still lacks ray tracing and Tensor cores. Do not confuse it with the faster GTX 1660 Super.

Is the RTX 3050 equivalent?
RTX 3050 8GB
The 8GB RTX 3050 adds hardware ray-tracing cores, Tensor cores, DLSS and a newer Nvidia video encoder/decoder generation. Nvidia specifies 2,560 CUDA cores, 8GB GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus, 130W graphics-card power and a 550W recommended system rating. DLSS can improve supported games, but ray tracing is not automatically worthwhile at every price, and raster performance varies by title.
RTX 3050 6GB
The 6GB model is a different product, not a lower-memory version with identical behavior. Nvidia’s reference specification lists 2,304 CUDA cores, 6GB on a 96-bit bus, 70W power and no supplementary connector. That makes it useful for some OEM systems, but retail dimensions and cooling still vary. Compare the exact model on Nvidia’s RTX 3050 specifications page.
Should you buy an RX 580 or RX 6600?
RX 580 8GB
An RX 580 can approach GTX 1650 Super performance in some rasterized games, but not consistently. Its substantially higher power draw increases PSU, heat and noise demands. Mining history, exhausted fans and altered BIOS files are common used-card concerns, so buy only when the price is very low and the system can handle it. Legacy performance data is available in Tom’s older-card hierarchy.
RX 6600
The RX 6600 is the more rational choice when you want a real upgrade: it belongs to AMD’s RDNA 2 RX 6000 desktop family, has 8GB of GDDR6 and receives current driver support. It is not equivalent in speed, price, power target or physical requirements. See AMD’s RX 6000 family page and RX 6600 support page.
Compatibility checklist for a replacement
- Power: Check the PSU’s continuous wattage, age and quality, plus the card’s required 6-pin or 8-pin connector.
- Physical fit: Measure card length, height and slot thickness; verify whether the computer requires a full-height or low-profile board.
- OEM limitations: Confirm BIOS/UEFI support, airflow and proprietary power connectors in a prebuilt system.
- Displays: Make sure the replacement has the required HDMI or DisplayPort outputs; unusual OEM layouts can differ.
- Drivers: Install the current driver for the exact GPU family. A driver cannot add DLSS to older GTX cards.
- Used-card protection: Prefer a return window or warranty, test every video output, listen for bearing noise and watch temperatures under load.
Desktop results should not be used to identify a laptop replacement by name alone. Laptop GPUs can have lower power limits, different clocks, Max-Q/OEM configurations and different cooling, so check the exact laptop GPU and its wattage.
Quick Recap
