That support includes RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs. RTX 40 Series cards are not officially supported yet; NVIDIA says it plans to investigate expansion after further tuning, but gives no release date. A compatible GPU also needs a game with DLSS 5 integration, such as NBA 2K27.
Which GPUs support DLSS 5 right now?
NVIDIA’s hardware matrix, checked October 13, 2026, lists DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for the GeForce RTX 50 Series. The listing covers the desktop product family and RTX 50 Series laptop GPUs. It does not list RTX 20, RTX 30 or RTX 40 Series cards for DLSS 5.

That generation-specific answer is narrower than “which GPUs support DLSS?” NVIDIA uses the DLSS name for several separate technologies. Super Resolution and DLAA span RTX 20 through RTX 50 Series in the matrix, Ray Reconstruction is also shown across those generations, and Frame Generation is listed for RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series. None of those entries automatically grants DLSS 5 compatibility.

| Hardware or service | DLSS 5 status in NVIDIA’s cited material | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop GPU | Supported | Eligible for DLSS 5 when the game has implemented it. |
| GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop GPU | Supported | NVIDIA includes the laptop family, but does not publish model-by-model performance or a minimum memory requirement in the cited FAQ. |
| GeForce RTX 40 Series GPU | Not currently listed | NVIDIA says expansion is planned work, not current support, and supplies no date. |
| GeForce RTX 30 or RTX 20 Series GPU | Not listed | These generations can use some other DLSS features, but that does not indicate DLSS 5 support. |
| GeForce NOW Ultimate streaming from RTX 5080 hardware | Included by NVIDIA’s FAQ | This is cloud rendering, not DLSS 5 running on a local graphics card. Current plan and game availability still need checking. |
What DLSS 5 actually adds
NVIDIA describes DLSS 5 as 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It is intended to produce more lifelike lighting and material responses using a neural-rendering system guided by the game’s 3D data. Game developers tune the implementation, so the feature is not a universal driver switch that can be applied to any title.

DLSS 5 complements ray tracing and path tracing rather than replacing them. NVIDIA says it can work alongside Super Resolution, Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. Those components solve different problems: Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, Frame Generation creates additional frames, and Ray Reconstruction improves ray-traced image reconstruction. DLSS 5’s neural-rendering work is a separate capability with its own hardware and game-integration requirement.
The practical consequence is that buying an RTX 50 Series card establishes hardware eligibility, not guaranteed access in every game. The title must expose a DLSS 5 implementation, and its version of the feature may have its own driver, graphics-mode or quality settings.
Does DLSS 5 work on RTX 40 Series?
Not officially at the time of NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 DLSS 5 FAQ update. NVIDIA’s stated position is that it plans to work on expanding official support to GeForce RTX 40 Series after RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned. That is a development plan, not a compatibility announcement or a promise of a particular date.

A 40-series card may offer Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation where a game supports those features, while still lacking the DLSS 5 option. Recheck NVIDIA’s current hardware matrix and the game’s own patch notes if support is later announced.
Does DLSS 5 work on RTX 50 Series laptops?
Yes. NVIDIA’s FAQ explicitly says DLSS 5 is supported across GeForce RTX 50 Series laptops as well as desktop GPUs. NVIDIA does not provide a separate minimum video-memory figure, per-model performance table or universal power-limit requirement in the cited material, so laptop eligibility should not be turned into a performance guarantee.

For a laptop, verify the exact GPU name rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “RTX” label. Also check whether the game runs on the discrete GPU, whether the system is on AC power, and whether the manufacturer’s graphics mode or hybrid-GPU setting affects the game. Those are general laptop configuration checks; they do not change NVIDIA’s generation-level DLSS 5 listing.
Can you use DLSS 5 through GeForce NOW?
NVIDIA’s FAQ includes GeForce NOW Ultimate members streaming from GeForce RTX 5080 rigs in the cloud. This gives an eligible cloud session access to the server hardware NVIDIA identifies for DLSS 5, but it should not be described as local GPU compatibility. Your own computer or phone is receiving a video stream while the game is rendered remotely.
Cloud access still depends on the current GeForce NOW Ultimate offering, the game being available in the service, and the game build exposing DLSS 5. Service catalogs and plan terms can change, so confirm all three in the GeForce NOW client before relying on the feature.
Which games support DLSS 5?
A GPU list cannot answer this by itself because each developer must integrate DLSS 5. NVIDIA’s cited launch example is NBA 2K27. In that game, the option is labeled DLSS Neural Rendering, not simply “DLSS 5.” Other games may use different menu wording or ship support in a patch.
Before buying hardware for one title, check the game’s current graphics settings, update notes and NVIDIA’s compatibility information. Look specifically for DLSS 5, 3D-Guided Neural Rendering or the game’s documented equivalent. A menu entry for DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction or Frame Generation alone is not proof that DLSS 5 is present.

How to turn on DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27
NVIDIA’s launch instructions are tied to the game and driver version available at launch, so labels can change in later updates. The published procedure is:
- Install GeForce Game Ready Driver 616.64 WHQL, the driver NVIDIA specifies for the launch example.
- Start NBA 2K27 and open Video Settings.
- Find the option named DLSS Neural Rendering and enable it.
- Apply the setting and load a game or replay. NVIDIA says the feature can also be toggled during gameplay and replays with F9.
If the option is missing, confirm that the game is fully updated, the driver installation completed successfully and the game is using an RTX 50 Series GPU or an eligible cloud session. A missing menu item can also mean that the title is running an older build or that a developer has changed the setting name. The driver number above is a launch-specific requirement, not a permanent rule for every future release.

1. Identify the exact GPU generation
Read the full model name in Windows Task Manager, the NVIDIA app or the laptop manufacturer’s specification page. “RTX” by itself is insufficient: RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series have different DLSS 5 status.
2. Separate local hardware from cloud hardware
For local rendering, the card must be an RTX 50 Series model currently listed by NVIDIA. For cloud rendering, verify that your GeForce NOW Ultimate session is using the RTX 5080-class infrastructure NVIDIA describes. These are different purchase and network decisions.
3. Confirm game integration
Check the specific game’s current settings and update documentation. Do not infer DLSS 5 from another DLSS feature or from a neighboring game running on the same engine.

- WINDFORCE cooling system
4. Check the driver and operating conditions
Install the driver version recommended by the game developer or NVIDIA, then restart the game after updating. On laptops, use the discrete GPU and connect AC power when testing graphics options. On cloud services, check the plan and server availability.
5. Treat performance numbers as configuration-specific
NVIDIA’s launch article reports a 5X performance gain since its March announcement and says the feature moved from dual RTX 5090 cards to one graphics card. It also reports up to 370 frames per second at 4K in NBA 2K27 on an RTX 5090 with Ultra settings, ray tracing and DLSS 5. Those are NVIDIA’s own claims for the stated configuration, not independent benchmarks or a forecast for every RTX 50 Series model.
Common compatibility mistakes and fixes
- Mistake: assuming every RTX card supports DLSS 5. Fix: check the generation in NVIDIA’s matrix; current DLSS 5 listing is RTX 50 Series.
- Mistake: treating Frame Generation or Super Resolution as DLSS 5. Fix: identify the exact feature name in the game menu. Related DLSS technologies have different support ranges.
- Mistake: expecting a driver update to add DLSS 5 to an unsupported game. Fix: wait for the developer’s integration or patch; the GPU driver cannot create a game-side implementation by itself.
- Mistake: reading an RTX 50 Series laptop listing as a performance guarantee. Fix: compare the exact laptop GPU, power configuration and cooling design. NVIDIA’s FAQ confirms support but does not publish model-level performance.
- Mistake: counting cloud streaming as ownership of a compatible card. Fix: describe GeForce NOW as remote rendering and verify the current Ultimate plan and game catalog.
- Mistake: generalizing a vendor benchmark. Fix: keep NVIDIA’s 5X and 370-FPS figures attached to their stated date, game, hardware and settings.
What to expect from future support
NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ says: “Once RTX 50 Series performance is more fully tuned, we plan to work on expanding official support to the GeForce RTX 40 Series.” The wording establishes intent to investigate expansion, but it does not establish a release schedule, final feature set or performance level for RTX 40 Series cards.
Until NVIDIA changes its matrix or a game and driver officially document support, the safe buying rule is simple: choose RTX 50 Series hardware for local DLSS 5 eligibility, or use the stated cloud route, and evaluate each game separately. RTX 20, 30 and 40 Series systems can still benefit from the DLSS features they support, but those benefits should not be labeled DLSS 5.
