On October 9, 2024, Kamala Harris’s campaign Twitch account broadcast Tim Walz speaking at an Arizona rally alongside live World of Warcraft gameplay by Twitch creator Preheat. Walz did not play the game: Preheat played and commented while the rally feed ran in the same broadcast.
What was the Kamala Harris Twitch stream with World of Warcraft?
It was a campaign livestream combining political programming with gameplay. WIRED previewed the broadcast as scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on October 9; Engadget later confirmed it took place. Who played, and what did Walz do?
Preheat played World of Warcraft and provided commentary. WIRED reported that the campaign described Preheat as a volunteer; Engadget reported that Preheat encouraged viewers to vote. Walz was the rally speaker, not the player. WIRED said Preheat had more than 50,000 Twitch followers at the time of its report; that figure describes the creator’s following, not how many people watched this stream.
Why did the campaign stream on Twitch?
The campaign said it wanted to increase Harris and Walz’s visibility among young men, reasoning that young men made up a majority of Twitch’s user base. That was the campaign’s stated audience rationale, not evidence that the broadcast reached new voters or changed opinions. In WIRED’s August 2024 account-launch coverage, campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster described the broader strategy: “Our job as the campaign is to break through a historically personalized media landscape, taking the VP and her vision for the future directly to the hardest-to-reach voters and those who will decide this election.” WIRED

Was this Harris’s first Twitch broadcast?
No. It was the campaign account’s first reported live gameplay stream, not its first Twitch broadcast. WIRED noted that the account had streamed Harris’s Democratic National Convention acceptance speech in August 2024. The October event was one part of the campaign’s broader outreach to male voters, a context also described by the Associated Press; that context does not establish how well this particular stream performed.
