If your old World of Warcraft characters have vanished from the list, that alone does not prove they were deleted. First check the Battle.net account and WoW license you used before, the game version you selected, and the realm where you played. If they still do not appear, Blizzard’s official support pages are the right next stop—but recovery eligibility depends on your account and Blizzard’s current rules.
Check the account, game version, and realm
Work through these checks before assuming the characters are gone. The available evidence does not establish a universal migration or deletion policy for every historical WoW version and realm, so the cause has to be diagnosed account by account.
- Confirm your Battle.net account and WoW license. Make sure you are signed into the account you played on before and have selected the relevant WoW license. If you have used more than one account or license, check each one. This is a sensible diagnostic step, not confirmation that an account mismatch caused the problem.
- Check the game version or mode. In the launcher, select the version or mode you previously played, then look for your characters there. Historical versions may handle characters differently; the available sources do not establish how every version preserved or transferred them.
- Inspect the realm list. Look for the realm where you remember playing and select it. Blizzard’s historical manual describes a character-selection screen and a way to change realms, but its interface instructions are dated and should not be treated as current UI directions: Blizzard’s historical WoW game manual. A recent player report says a character appeared after the player selected its destination realm again; that is anecdotal, not a guaranteed fix: player report about missing characters after a long break.
If you think a character was deleted
Visit Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration page. It is an official recovery destination, but its captured page did not provide enough detail to confirm current eligibility, level thresholds, or time limits. Check the live page for the rules that apply now; do not assume a particular character can be restored.
When to contact Blizzard Support
If the character is missing from the expected account, game version, and realm—or the restoration page does not resolve the issue—use Blizzard Support for account-specific help. The available sources do not identify a single cause for a missing character or establish that all old characters were automatically deleted or migrated.

To make your support request easier to investigate, gather what you remember:
- Character name or names, including approximate spelling
- Realm and region
- Approximate last-played period
- Battle.net account and WoW license details
These details are practical preparation, not a published Blizzard checklist. Avoid sharing passwords or other sensitive account credentials outside Blizzard’s official support process.
