Dr. Catherine Halsey loses her left arm in Halo canon after Sarah Palmer shoots her in the shoulder during the Requiem events of Halo 4: Spartan Ops. The arm is amputated aboard a Covenant ship, and Halsey later wears a prosthetic arm supplied by the SPARTAN-IV program’s medical staff.
What happened, in order
- Palmer shoots Halsey in the shoulder. The injury happens during the Requiem confrontation in Halo 4: Spartan Ops. Palmer is the one who fires the shot. The sources do not describe Halsey’s arm being cut off during the shooting itself.
- Halsey loses consciousness. After she passes out, her left arm is amputated while she is aboard a Covenant ship.
- Halsey receives a prosthetic. Later, she has a prosthetic arm, which she attributes to the doctors of the SPARTAN-IV program.
Who did what
Palmer’s shot is the cause of the injury. The amputation is a separate medical event that follows it. Nothing in the official sources says Palmer removed the arm, and none credits Jul ‘Mdama with shooting Halsey. Readers who have seen the injury summarized as “Jul ‘Mdama shot Halsey” or “Palmer amputated the arm” are working from a garbled account.
Where the prosthetic comes from
Halo Waypoint’s official character feature reproduces Halsey’s own in-universe explanation for her replacement arm. She says:
“The docs in the SPARTAN-IV program set me up with the best prosthetic an unlimited military budget can buy.”

That line is the clearest official statement on the prosthesis. It confirms that the arm was provided by SPARTAN-IV medical staff, and it is presented as Halsey’s words rather than a narrator’s summary.
Where the story is told
The injury belongs to the Halo 4 era, not to Halo 5. Halo Waypoint’s official retrospective describes Spartan Ops as an experience within Halo 4, and it points to the Episode 10 mission “Seize the Power.” The Requiem events, including Palmer’s shot, sit in that Spartan Ops storyline.
If you want to see the sequence for yourself, you need a copy of Halo 4 that includes Spartan Ops. Current availability, platform listings, and whether a particular physical edition contains the relevant episodes were not confirmed for this article, so check the edition’s contents before buying.

How firm the details are
The prosthetic arm and its attribution to the SPARTAN-IV program rest on Halo Waypoint’s official feature, so those points are firm. The shooting and amputation sequence is documented in the Halopedia chronology, which is a fan-maintained reference rather than an official source. The broad outline matches the official material, but if you need the exact order of the shot, the loss of consciousness, and the amputation, check the scene in the game itself.
