Jason Brody’s fate depends on which ending you choose in Far Cry 3: he either leaves the Rook Islands with his surviving friends or stays with Citra and is killed. Ubisoft’s official material does not establish one ending as the definitive canon. The later Vaas: Insanity DLC revisits Jason as part of Vaas’s mind, not as a confirmed account of Jason’s life after the island.
What happens to Jason in each Far Cry 3 ending?
Far Cry 3 puts Jason Brody, a tourist stranded on the Rook Islands, at the center of the story. Its two endings give him sharply different fates.

If Jason leaves with his friends
Jason rejects Citra’s demand that he stay and leaves the island with his surviving friends. In this outcome, he survives the events on the Rook Islands.
If Jason stays with Citra
Jason chooses to remain with Citra and the Rakyat, embracing their warrior path. Citra then kills him.

Ubisoft describes Far Cry 3 as Jason’s story and presents both outcomes. The game’s choice—not a later sequel confirming one path—determines what happens to him.
Which Far Cry 3 ending is canon?
Ubisoft’s official material discussed here does not identify either ending as Jason’s single canonical fate. That means the most accurate answer is conditional: Jason lives if he leaves with his friends, and dies if he stays with Citra. The available official evidence does not resolve which outcome should be treated as the one definitive version of events.

Does Vaas: Insanity show Jason after Far Cry 3?
No—not as a straightforward sequel about Jason’s life. Ubisoft describes Vaas: Insanity, a Far Cry 6 DLC, as taking place after Vaas’s confrontation with Jason and trapping Vaas inside his own mind. In it, Vaas is attacked by taunting versions of Jason and Citra. Those appearances belong to Vaas’s psychological experience; they do not establish that Jason and Vaas meet again in ordinary events.
Ubisoft narrative director Navid Khavari described the characters’ thematic connection in an interview about the DLC: “Vaas says ‘I am you, and you are me’ to Jason a lot, and their journeys are the same; one succeeds, one fails.” That comment explains the parallel journeys explored by the DLC. It is not a ruling about which ending Jason receives or what he does afterward.
