Spoilers for Resident Evil Village and its ending: The Mia Chris Redfield appears to shoot at the start is Mother Miranda in disguise. The real Mia is being held elsewhere. She survives the main story, and Chris reunites her with Rose after Ethan’s final sacrifice.
Who is shot at the start of Resident Evil Village?
It is not the real Mia. Mother Miranda has taken Mia captive and impersonates her while living with Ethan and their baby, Rose. Chris Redfield and his team believe they have found Miranda, so they shoot the apparent Mia. Miranda is playing dead: she revives during transport, kills members of the team, and takes Rose.

The confusion is deliberate. The opening presents the shooting as Mia’s apparent death, but the person Chris’s team shoots is Miranda wearing Mia’s face.
Where is the real Mia during the game?
Miranda has been holding the real Mia separately while impersonating her. Mia is alive, but she is not with Ethan and Rose during the opening events. Before Village, Mia and Ethan had survived the Baker incident in Resident Evil 7. Mia had secretly worked for The Connections, caring for and guarding Eveline; after the incident, the couple were kept in hiding.

What happens to Mia at the end?
After Ethan defeats Miranda, he stays behind to give Chris time to escape with Rose. Ethan detonates a bomb, sacrificing himself. Chris brings Rose back to Mia, and the main campaign ends with mother and daughter reunited. Mia is alive at the end of Village; it is Ethan who is believed dead and honored at a grave.
Does Shadows of Rose reveal what happens to Mia later?
No later fate for Mia is established in the official descriptions of the expansion. Shadows of Rose follows Rose 16 years after the events of Village, rather than centering on Mia. Its focus on Rose does not by itself confirm Mia’s circumstances during that later period.

Why did Miranda impersonate Mia?
Miranda’s deception let her remain close to Ethan and Rose while concealing that she had taken the real Mia. The opening attack then served as a sudden way to seize Rose. The key distinction is between the two women: Miranda is the apparent Mia in the opening, while the real Mia is held elsewhere until the story’s ending.
