Its creator studio, Monolith Productions, was shut down in February 2025, and Warner Bros. holds a US patent that covers the core idea. Nothing in the available reporting shows that the system has been revived, licensed to other developers, or scheduled for a future project.
What the Nemesis System did
The Nemesis System debuted in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014), developed by Monolith Productions, and returned in the sequel Middle-earth: Shadow of War (2017). Its purpose was to make enemy orcs remember and react to the player. A captain who beat you could be promoted, gain a scar, take a new title, or hold a grudge in a later fight. Losing to an orc did not reset the world; it changed the orc, and that change carried forward. Over time players built up a rivalry history with a small set of recurring enemies, which made the open-world combat feel personal in a way most action games of the period did not.
The patent record describes the underlying mechanism in narrower terms. In the claims of US Patent 10,926,179 B2, a predefined event involving the player avatar and one non-player character triggers a change in parameters for a second character, and the system then outputs an indication of those changed parameters. That is a specific technical arrangement, not a description of every reactive enemy or recurring rival. Many games have since used rival characters that remember defeats, and most of them are not covered by that claim language.
Why no later game has carried it forward
A 2026 TechRadar retrospective on Shadow of Mordor reported that Warner Bros. had not shipped another game using the system after Shadow of War. That statement describes shipped releases as of the article’s date. It does not rule out unannounced or internal development, and it is the most recent independent account of the system’s status found in the sources reviewed.
#1 Best Overall
- Become the most feared force in Mordor in a new chronicle set before the events of the Lord of the Rings
- Exploit the individual fears, weakness and memories of your enemies as you dismantle Sauron's forces from within.
- Harness the Spirit of vengeance to inflict brutal combos while mastering powerful new skills and weaponry.
The studio that built the system had also been cut from the picture. In February 2025, Warner Bros. shut down Monolith Productions and canceled its Wonder Woman project, as reported by Ars Technica. Monolith was the developer behind both Middle-earth games, so the closure ended the original development path for a follow-up. The sources do not establish whether Warner Bros. assigned the system to another internal team, and they do not say whether any other publisher or developer has been offered access.
What the patent covers and what it does not
US Patent 10,926,179 B2 is titled “Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games.” The Google Patents record lists Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. as original assignee, a grant and publication date of 23 February 2021, and an adjusted expiration of 11 August 2036. Those dates are the database’s figures. The same page states that its legal-status field is an assumption and not a legal conclusion.

| Item | What the record shows | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Original assignee | Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., per Google Patents | Who currently controls licensing decisions |
| Grant/publication date | 2021-02-23 | Anything about foreign filings |
| Adjusted expiration | 2036-08-11, per Google Patents | Whether that date is legally final |
| Legal status | Flagged by the database as an assumption | A legal ruling on enforceability |
| Claim scope | Event-triggered parameter changes for NPCs | Whether a specific other game infringes |
The patent is a US document. The sources reviewed do not address its international equivalents, so readers should not assume the same protection applies in other markets. A patent also does not prevent developers from building similar rival systems that avoid the claimed arrangement, and the sources do not analyze any specific competing game against the claims.
The Nemesis Forge online feature
Warner Bros. Games Support has posted a status update saying the Nemesis Forge feature in Shadow of Mordor is no longer available because of network changes. This concerns an online feature, not the core single-player Nemesis System. Readers who have seen the two described as one thing should treat them separately. Check the support notice for the platforms and date it covers, since the sources reviewed do not restate those details.

What remains unknown
- Whether Warner Bros. plans to revive the system in a future game, or has any internal project using it.
- Whether the patent is available for licensing, and on what terms.
- Whether the patent’s international status matches the US record.
- Whether the system’s underlying code or tools have been passed to another team after Monolith’s closure.
Until Warner Bros. or a successor team says otherwise, the Nemesis System’s status is that of a shipped mechanic from 2014 and 2017 that has not been carried into a later release, and that is protected by a patent whose term runs to 2036 according to the US database record.
