He said he planned to spend time with his family and consider what came next—not that he was retiring or starting a particular new job. Later announcements put that departure in context: Hryb took on a Commodore community-advisor role in 2026 and was reported to be hosting Xbox FanFest events, but neither development establishes a permanent return to Microsoft.
What did “taking a step back” mean?
Hryb used the phrase while describing the next chapter of his career in his July 14, 2023 announcement. He said he would leave Xbox after 20 years, enjoy the Seattle summer with his family, and think about his next step. He did not name a new employer or specific role in that post.

His announcement thanked Xbox colleagues and gamers. In the visible LinkedIn post, he wrote: “After 20 incredible years, I will be leaving Xbox. As I step back and work on the next chapter of my career, I want to want to thank the millions of gamers around the world who have included me as part of their lives.” The repeated “want to” is in the original wording; “millions of gamers” is his expression of thanks, not an independently measured audience figure. His work included serving as a director of programming at Xbox Live, writing a blog, and co-hosting the weekly Official Xbox Podcast, previously known as Major Nelson Radio. Microsoft confirmed his departure to GeekWire.
