YouTube says a strike on an archived livestream may disable live-stream access. First check whether the notice is an actual copyright strike, a Content ID claim, or a scheduled takedown: those are different events with different next steps.
First, identify what YouTube did
Look for the official email from [email protected] and check YouTube Studio’s active copyright strikes view and the Content tab. If you cannot access the channel, YouTube says to consult the notification email. A Content ID claim on an archived livestream is not automatically a strike: YouTube says claims are made after a stream ends if the creator chooses to archive it, and a claim typically does not result in a copyright strike. A copyright strike follows a copyright removal request that YouTube considers valid.
- Content ID claim: A claim is not, by itself, a copyright strike. Check the notice for the claimant, affected material, and any action or restriction it describes.
- Scheduled removal request: The notice may give you seven days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied.
- Applied copyright strike: YouTube has removed content following a copyright removal request. Deleting the replay after the strike is applied generally does not clear it.

What an offline-stream strike can mean for your channel
YouTube’s account-standing guidance says: “If you get a strike on an active live stream or archived live stream, your live stream access may be disabled.” In other words, a strike on a replay can affect your ability to livestream even though the broadcast has ended. Check the live-stream access status shown for your account in Studio; the wording “may be disabled” does not establish that every archived-stream strike receives the same restriction.

YouTube separately states a specific duration for an active stream removed for copyright: live-stream access is restricted for seven days, or fourteen days following another copyright strike. Do not automatically apply those durations to an archived-stream strike; follow the notice and current account status shown to you.

If the removal is scheduled, act before the deadline
A copyright removal request is a legal request, usually submitted by a copyright owner or an authorized representative. If YouTube says the request is scheduled, its guidance gives the uploader seven days to take certain actions before removal and the strike take effect. The notice determines whether that option is available and when the deadline falls.
- Read the Studio notice and email. Confirm that the takedown is scheduled, note the deadline, and identify the content and claimant.
- Consider deleting the content before the deadline. YouTube lists this as a way to avoid the strike while a scheduled removal is still pending. This is different from deleting a replay after a strike has already been applied.
- Consider asking the claimant for a retraction. If the request is mistaken or the issue can be resolved with the rights holder, seek a retraction before the deadline.
- If the notice concerns a rejected Content ID appeal, check whether cancelling that appeal is available. YouTube lists cancelling the appeal as an option in that relevant scheduled-removal situation; it is not a general option for every takedown.

If a strike has already been applied
Deleting the archived stream generally will not remove an applied strike. YouTube lists three routes for resolving a strike; which one fits depends on the notice and circumstances.
- Request a retraction: Contact the claimant and ask them to withdraw the copyright removal request.
- Complete Copyright School and wait 90 days: YouTube says a strike can expire after Copyright School and the stated 90-day period, subject to the conditions on its guidance page.
- Submit a counter notification: Consider this only if you believe the removal was mistaken or the use is covered by a copyright exception, such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain.
A counter notification is a legal request, not a routine appeal. YouTube says that after receiving one, it may reinstate the content unless the claimant provides notice of legal action within 10 US business days. Because the process has legal consequences and the relevant rules can depend on jurisdiction and facts, seek qualified legal advice if the stakes are significant.

Keep the three situations straight
| Situation | What YouTube says | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Content ID claim on an archived stream | Claims are made after the stream ends if the creator chooses to archive it; a claim typically does not itself cause a strike. | A claim is not automatically a strike. |
| Copyright removal request still scheduled | The uploader may have seven days to take specified action before removal and a strike take effect. | The seven-day option is not available after every takedown; check the notice. |
| Strike applied to an archived livestream | A strike may disable live-stream access. | Offline status does not guarantee that live-stream access is unaffected. |
| Active livestream removed for copyright | YouTube states a seven-day live-stream restriction, or fourteen days following another strike. | Do not assume these active-stream durations apply to every archived-stream case. |
| Counter notification | A legal request to reinstate content when the uploader believes removal was mistaken or an exception applies. | It is not a risk-free, generic appeal. |
Copyright precautions for gaming streams and replays
A game stream can include more than gameplay: background music, menu themes, licensed tracks, trailers, voice chat, or other creators’ clips may raise separate rights questions. A Content ID claim and a copyright removal request are not interchangeable, and a claim alone does not establish that a strike has been issued. Review the specific material identified in the notice and the rights or permissions that apply to it. YouTube’s general help pages cannot determine whether an individual use infringes copyright or qualifies for an exception.
YouTube reported receiving copyright removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022. That is a platform-wide count of videos covered by requests, not a count of livestreams and not a measure of the likelihood that any particular stream will receive a strike. YouTube’s 2022 copyright report.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a separate need—keeping pre-recorded content live on YouTube—StreamNeo lets you upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This does not change YouTube’s copyright rules or resolve an existing strike. Try StreamNeo free.
