If a UFC title fight ends in a draw or a no contest, neither fighter is declared the winner. In the documented UFC cases, the champion kept or was reinstated to the belt—but that is not proof of an automatic rule for every situation. The result depends on how the bout was scored or stopped, the commission’s ruling, and UFC’s title decision.
Draw and no contest are different results
| Question | Draw | No contest |
|---|---|---|
| How is it reached? | Judges’ scores do not produce a winner. The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports lists unanimous, majority, and split draws in its Unified Rules of MMA (August 2025). | The bout is officially recorded without a winner or loser. Under the ABC rules, one example is an early stoppage caused by accidental injury before enough action has elapsed for a scorecard decision. A commission can also change a result after reviewing it. |
| Does either fighter get a win? | No. A draw has no winner, as UFC’s Introduction to MMA explains. | No. A no contest is not a win, a loss, or a draw. |
| Does the belt change hands? | In UFC’s documented example, the champion retained the title after a split draw. | In documented UFC cases, the incumbent retained or was reinstated as champion. Those examples do not establish an unconditional rule for every case. |
Does the champion keep the belt after a draw?
In the UFC example documented by the promotion, yes: Mason Fowler retained the UFC BJJ light heavyweight title after his match with Nick Rodriguez was ruled a split draw at UFC BJJ 11. UFC reported the result on September 25, 2026, in its UFC BJJ 11 results.

That is a specific example, not evidence of a universal rule that covers every possible UFC title-fight scenario. A draw means the judges did not determine a winner; it does not by itself award the belt to the challenger.
Does a no contest count as a loss in UFC?
No. A no contest records the bout without a winner or loser. The reason matters: the ABC rules distinguish an early accidental-injury stoppage, before enough of the bout has elapsed to score, from a later stoppage that can result in a technical decision if a fighter is ahead on the scorecards. An accidental foul therefore does not automatically mean the result will be a no contest. See the ABC Unified Rules of MMA and UFC’s Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.

What happens to a title after a no contest?
UFC examples show an incumbent retaining or being restored to the title, but the circumstances differ. The cases illustrate why the official result and the championship decision should be considered separately.
UFC 321: Aspinall retained after an accidental eye poke
UFC’s Tom Aspinall athlete profile records that his heavyweight title bout with Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 was ruled a no contest after an accidental eye poke and that Aspinall retained the title at that time. The profile also records that Aspinall later vacated the belt; the retention describes the outcome of that bout, not his current title status.
UFC 214: Cormier was reinstated after a commission overturned the result
In 2017, the California State Athletic Commission changed Jon Jones’s UFC 214 win over Daniel Cormier to a no contest following a commission review linked to a potential anti-doping policy violation. UFC said on September 13, 2017: “As this was a title bout, Cormier will be reinstated as UFC light heavyweight champion.” The statement appears in UFC’s UFC Statement on Light Heavyweight Title. This case shows that a no contest can follow a post-event review, rather than an in-cage stoppage.
Commissions can review results in other circumstances, too. UFC reported that Pennsylvania’s commission changed Charles Oliveira versus Nik Lentz to a no contest after an illegal knee in 2011 (Oliveira-Lentz Result Changed to No Contest).
Quick Recap
What determines the official outcome?
- How the bout ended: A judges’ draw differs from a stoppage ruled a no contest.
- When a stoppage happened and the scorecards: Under the ABC framework, an early accidental-injury stoppage may be a no contest, while a qualifying later stoppage may produce a technical decision if a fighter is ahead.
- The commission’s ruling: The regulator overseeing the bout applies the relevant rules and may review or change a result after the event.
- The title decision: The documented cases show retention or reinstatement, but do not establish an exceptionless UFC rule for every scenario.
