Your Switch’s system-region setting and the country/region on your Nintendo Account are separate settings. Changing the account country/region can affect which eShop market you use and whether market-specific codes redeem; it does not make game and DLC versions from different countries compatible.
What does “change the region” mean on a Nintendo Switch?
There are two settings that can be called the region:
| Setting | Where it lives | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|---|
| System region | On the console | Nintendo’s system-transfer guidance describes a restriction involving a Japan-region source console, even when its linked Nintendo Account is set to a country other than Japan. This is a transfer-flow example, not a general statement about eShop behavior. |
| Nintendo Account country/region | On your account | It is relevant to the eShop market and to some market-specific cards and codes. The cited code guidance is specifically for Japan. |
Changing one setting should not be treated as changing the other. First identify which setting you intend to change; the effects below mainly concern the Nintendo Account country/region.

What happens to the eShop, codes, and purchases?
eShop cards and download codes
Check the country/region of the account and the market that issued the code before buying or redeeming it. Nintendo’s Japan support says Japan-issued prepaid and download-card codes require a Nintendo Account set to Japan. That is a Japan-specific rule in the cited guidance; it does not establish that every market uses identical requirements.

Purchased games and purchase history
Nintendo describes digital purchases and purchase history as associated with the Nintendo Account. It also says digital purchases cannot be returned, refunded, or transferred to another account. That guidance does not say that changing the country/region on the same account deletes purchase history; changing an account setting is not the same thing as switching to a different Nintendo Account.

Remaining eShop balance
Nintendo says balances are managed per account, cannot be combined with another account’s balance, and are nonrefundable. The cited official pages do not specify whether an existing balance prevents a country/region change or exactly what happens to it afterward. Do not assume it will be wiped, converted, or remain usable in the same way; check your account balance and the applicable account guidance before changing the setting.

Will DLC from another region work with your game?
Not necessarily. Nintendo warns that downloadable content and a game sold in different countries may not work together. It gives an overseas version of Splatoon 2 paired with Japanese eShop DLC as an example, and says cross-country combinations are not verified or guaranteed.
Before buying DLC, check the exact game version and the market where both the game and DLC were sold or distributed. Changing a console or account region is not a guarantee that mismatched DLC will work.

Nintendo lists membership information in eShop account information, and its Japan payment guidance explains how to stop automatic renewal. Those pages do not establish whether changing an account’s country/region during an active membership keeps, cancels, or reprices the plan, or what happens to its payment method.
Before changing the account setting, check your membership and renewal details in eShop account information. For a Japan-market membership, Nintendo says automatic renewal should be stopped no later than 48 hours before the membership period ends.

Quick Recap
What to check before changing a region setting
- Confirm whether you mean the console’s system region or your Nintendo Account country/region.
- Check the issuing market of any prepaid card or download code against the account country/region. The cited Japan guidance requires a Japan-region account for Japan-issued codes.
- Review your account balance; Nintendo’s cited pages do not specify its exact treatment after an account-country change.
- Check your game’s sales region before purchasing DLC, and make sure the DLC market matches where that game version was sold.
- Review your Nintendo Switch Online membership and renewal details; the cited pages do not settle how an account-region change affects an active plan.
