What Happens if You Delete Game Data on PS4?

Deleting an installed PS4 game frees storage and lets you reinstall it later. Deleting saved data can erase progress unless you have a usable USB or PlayStation Plus copy.

It depends on what you delete. Removing a PS4 game application frees the space it uses and lets you redownload it from your Library (or reinstall it from disc). Deleting the game’s saved data is different: it can erase your progress, and reinstalling the game does not restore a save. Check for a usable USB or PlayStation Plus online copy before deleting saved data.

Game application and saved data are separate

“Game data” can mean either the installed application or the save files that record progress. PS4 manages these separately, so the outcome depends on the command and storage location you choose.

What you delete What happens Can you get it back?
Installed game application The application is removed from the console, freeing the space it occupied. PlayStation says you can redownload a purchased digital game from your Library; reinstall a disc game using its disc. PlayStation’s storage guide and CE-38612-0 troubleshooting describe these options.
Saved data in system storage The selected save file is deleted from the console. Only if another usable copy exists, such as in PlayStation Plus online storage or on USB. Reinstalling the application alone does not establish that a deleted save can be recovered.
Saved data in online or USB storage The selected copy is deleted from that storage location. Check whether another copy exists elsewhere before deleting it.

How to tell which one you are deleting

To remove the installed game

From the content launcher or Library, highlight the game, press OPTIONS, then choose Delete. This removes the application, not the save through the saved-data controls. If you later want the game again, redownload the digital version from your Library or reinstall the disc version.

To delete a save file

Go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management. Choose the storage location, then choose Delete and select the game and file. Take care to select the intended location and save: system storage, online storage, and USB storage are separate.

If you already deleted something

  1. If you deleted only the application: redownload the digital game from your Library or reinstall it from disc.
  2. If you deleted a local save: check PlayStation Plus online storage for a copy. On PS4, use Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage > Download to System Storage, then select the game and save. The labels may vary slightly by system software version. PlayStation’s online-storage guide explains downloading and deleting cloud saves.
  3. If you previously copied the save to USB: connect that device and use Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device > Copy to System Storage. PlayStation also documents copying saves from system storage to USB in its storage guide.
  4. If the only copy was deleted: the reviewed PlayStation support instructions do not document a way to recover it. Reinstalling the game is not a substitute for a saved-data copy.

Before copying or downloading, check the save’s date. Choosing an older copy can replace newer progress on the console.

Make room without risking progress

If the goal is to free space, deleting an application is usually the direct option when you can download or reinstall it later. For more room without repeatedly uninstalling games, PS4 can use a compatible USB external hard drive formatted as extended storage. Sony’s US support page lists PS4 system software 4.50 or later, a SuperSpeed USB connection and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB; correct operation is not guaranteed for every drive model. See PlayStation’s USB extended-storage requirements.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

Extended storage holds applications and add-ons, not application saved data, themes, screenshots or video clips. A USB device used through Application Saved Data Management is a different use: it can hold copied saves. Do not confuse a drive formatted as PS4 extended storage with a USB save-copy workflow.

Ways to protect saved data

Use PlayStation Plus online storage

PlayStation Plus online storage is another place to keep a save copy. The UK support page lists a limit of 100 GB of PS4 saved data and 1,000 PS4 saved-data files; those are the limits stated by PlayStation on that page, and subscription terms or limits can change. Check that the save is present and current before deleting the console copy.

Do not use a full restore as a fix for one deleted game

Restoring a PS4 backup is broader than removing or reinstalling a game: PlayStation warns that restoring a backup erases data saved on the console. Its backup guide advises protecting saved data as part of the backup process. Read PlayStation’s backup and restore instructions before using that operation.

There is also a specific troubleshooting case that should not be generalized: for application data corruption error CE-38612-0, PlayStation instructs users to back up game save data before deleting and reinstalling the application. That guidance is for that error; it does not mean reinstalling a game generally repairs or restores deleted saves. PlayStation’s CE-38612-0 steps explain the procedure.
