PlayStation’s official support pages use the word “suspension” rather than “ban,” but the two terms describe the same everyday situation. What you lose depends on the scope of the restriction: the account, its communication features, or the console itself.
The rules below come from PlayStation’s US support and terms pages. If you live elsewhere, check your regional PlayStation Support site, because local rules and appeal processes can differ. PlayStation’s pages also change over time, so confirm the live text before you act on any deadline.
The three kinds of suspension and what each one blocks
PlayStation distinguishes restrictions by scope. The scope determines what you can reach, so start by identifying which one applies to you.

The account suspension follows you rather than a single console. A communication suspension is narrower, but PlayStation’s guidance says it can still stop you from playing on PS4, so the notice you receive is the document to trust for exact effects. A console suspension is the broadest in terms of hardware: the terms say the device is blocked for every account, which means signing into a different account on that console does not get around the restriction.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Temporary versus permanent suspensions
PlayStation says a suspension may be temporary or permanent. It also says the type and length are determined by the following:
“The suspension type and length are determined based on the severity of the violation and the player’s offense history.” (PlayStation Support, Suspensions on PlayStation)
The support page does not publish a duration table, so there is no official standard number of days for a first offense or a repeat offense. Treat any figure you see on forums or third-party sites as unverified unless it appears in the notice you received.

How to find out what happened
Work through these checks in order. Each step either confirms the restriction or narrows the cause.
- Try to sign in and write down the exact error code shown. Do not assume a code tells you the reason unless PlayStation’s official pages map that code to a cause.
- Check the email address you use as your PlayStation sign-in ID, including the junk or spam folder. PlayStation usually emails the reason and duration of a suspension to that address.
- Check My Support on PlayStation’s site for your account status and suspension details.
- If you find no notice, contact PlayStation Support for more information.
A communication suspension may not show up at sign-in at all. It can appear when you try to use social features such as party chat or change your online ID. If that is the only symptom you see, the notice and My Support entry are still the place to confirm which restriction applies.
Appealing a permanent suspension
PlayStation’s US appeal page says you may be eligible to appeal a permanent suspension if all of the following are true:

- The suspension was a permanent one imposed for a breach of the Code of Conduct.
- The suspension occurred within the last six months.
- The suspension has not already been appealed.
To proceed, you must review and accept the form’s terms and agree to follow the Code of Conduct and the Terms of Service. The page states that temporary suspensions and suspensions older than six months are not accepted through this process. Use the current form at PlayStation Support, How to appeal a permanent suspension on PlayStation, because eligibility and steps can change.
The six-month window is an eligibility rule for this appeal route. It is not a typical length for a ban, and it is not a deadline that applies to every type of suspension.
Suspensions caused by a chargeback
A chargeback is a payment reversal started through your bank or card issuer rather than through PlayStation. PlayStation says a reversal can signal suspected fraud or account takeover, so it may suspend your account or console while it investigates.

If there is no lawful reason for the reversal, the account stays suspended until the debt is repaid. PlayStation’s guidance on this route says access can be restored by paying the balance. The support page associates two codes with chargeback suspensions: WS-37368-7 and WS-116367-4. If you did not authorize the purchase, do not treat the bank reversal as an automatic appeal. Follow PlayStation’s unauthorized-transaction guidance and contact PlayStation Support.

An account suspension can make paid products and services unusable while it lasts. If you cannot sign in, PlayStation says you cannot add or remove a payment method or cancel a subscription through the normal account settings.

PlayStation will not attempt to collect a subscription payment that comes due while the suspension is active. In that case the subscription and its associated benefits lapse. Suspension is not the same as account termination
PlayStation’s US Terms of Service describe termination separately. Under termination, access to the services ends, and connected rankings, scores, trophies, virtual items, balances, subscriptions, and other account-linked information become inaccessible or are not retained. The terms say termination is irreversible. They also state that, upon termination, you generally receive no refund for items, subscriptions, virtual items, prepaid products or services, accumulated in-game value, or unused wallet balance, except where the law requires a refund or the agreement expressly provides one. These consequences belong to termination under the terms, so do not assume they apply to every temporary suspension. The full text is at PlayStation Terms of Service (US).
If the console itself is suspended
The US Terms of Service say a suspended console cannot access PlayStation services with any account, cannot play games or modes that require online access, and cannot access PlayStation Store content. Disc games are the exception. The terms say:
“You will still be able to play any disc games that run on your console, if they do not need to connect to our Services to run.” (PlayStation Terms of Service (US))

If you bought a second-hand console, PlayStation Support says it cannot lift a suspension on that device. Contact the seller, who is the party that can resolve the issue with the previous owner. Details are on PlayStation Support, Suspensions on PlayStation.
What the official sources do not tell you
PlayStation’s support and appeal pages do not publish the number or rate of PS5 account suspensions, average suspension length, or appeal success rate. Any statistic you see elsewhere is not supported by these official sources, and the six-month appeal window should not be read as a typical or guaranteed ban length.
