In D&D, a wizard whose spellbook is destroyed can copy the Wizard spells they currently have prepared into a new book. The other spells recorded in the lost book must be found again. The rules give the same core recovery process in the 2024 and 2014 Basic Rules.
What happens to a wizard’s spells when the book is destroyed?
The book’s loss does not automatically erase every spell the character knows. Under the 2024 rules, the wizard can transcribe their currently prepared Wizard spells into a new spellbook, using the normal procedure for copying a found spell. Spells that were in the old book but are not currently prepared are not covered by that recovery rule; the wizard must find them again.

The spellbook remains important because it records the level 1+ spells the wizard knows and provides access to spells for preparation. Losing it also affects ritual casting: the 2024 Wizard’s Ritual Adept feature requires a ritual-tagged spell to be in the book and requires the wizard to read from it to cast that spell as a ritual. The official 2024 Basic Rules explain the Wizard’s spellbook and replacement procedure.
How to rebuild the spellbook
Use the campaign’s edition rules. In the 2024 Basic Rules, the wizard can rebuild the prepared portion by transcribing those spells into a new book. To recover other entries, the character needs to find the spells again, then copy them.
#1 Best Overall
- The Spellbook cards are an invaluable resource for both players and Dungeon Masters. With these spell details at their fingertips, they can save time, keep the action up, and avoid stalling the game by flipping through books.
- Each deck contains laminated cards that players and Dungeon Masters can use as a quick reference resource during Dungeon & Dragons tabletop play.
- Spell name and important information is easy to find for quick reference, with spell level prominently displayed for easy sorting.
- Descriptive / Mechanical text is written in full wherever possible. When it isn’t, a Player’s Handbook page reference is given. Scaling spells have an additional section with details on how they improve.
- Contains 153 Cleric spell and domain cards from cantrips to level 9.
| What is being copied | Time and cost per spell level | Rules context |
|---|---|---|
| A Wizard spell found elsewhere that the wizard can prepare | 2 hours and 50 GP | Transcription from a found source under the 2024 Basic Rules |
| A spell from the wizard’s own spellbook into another book | 1 hour and 10 GP | Making a copy while the original book is available under the 2024 Basic Rules |
These are in-game time and gold piece costs, not real-world prices. The rules call for a new spellbook but do not require a particular branded book or retail product. The prepared-spell recovery process uses the found-spell transcription procedure; the cheaper own-book rate is for copying from a book the wizard still has.
Do the 2014 rules work differently?
The 2014 Basic Rules call the backup procedure “Replacing the Book,” while the 2024 rules use “Copying the Book” and explicitly describe what to do if the book is lost. The central outcome and the stated copying rates are the same: prepared spells can be reconstructed, while other spells must be found again. Use the class rules for the edition your campaign is playing rather than combining features across editions.

- Ability / Spell name and important info is easy to find for quick reference.
- Descriptive / Mechanical text is written in full wherever possible. When it isn’t, a Player’s Handbook page reference is given.
- Scaling spell-like abilities have an additional section with details on how they improve.
- Card backs prominently display class or race icons for easy sorting.
- The cards are highly durable and are made to last. Each card has a coating that protects them and makes them safe to use with dry erase markers.
One edition-specific distinction: the 2024 Wizard can use the spellbook as a Spellcasting Focus; the 2014 Basic Rules instead direct the Wizard to use an Arcane Focus. See the official 2014 Basic Rules Wizard text for that edition’s wording.

The 2024 rules explicitly recommend keeping a backup spellbook. While the original is available, copying a spell into another book takes 1 hour and 10 GP per spell level under the stated rules. A spare ordinary book is sufficient; no special physical product is required.
