On Windows, games may still run without the graphics card maker’s driver, but that does not mean Windows has no graphics support at all. It may be using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and a software-rendering fallback instead. A game might launch, run poorly, or fail, depending on what it requires; installing the appropriate driver is the normal fix.
What “without graphics card drivers” means on Windows
Windows normally still has a way to display an image when a manufacturer-specific graphics driver is missing, broken, or disabled. Microsoft’s generic BasicDisplay driver provides basic display output. Microsoft says it is used with BasicRender, which exposes WARP software-rendering functionality. This is a fallback, not an equivalent replacement for the full driver supplied for a particular GPU.
DirectX graphics APIs are used by games and other high-performance multimedia applications. A generic display path may not provide the same graphics features or hardware acceleration as the appropriate manufacturer driver. The fallback’s existence therefore does not establish that a particular game will launch or perform acceptably.
Will games still run?
Possibly. A game may start under the fallback path, run very poorly, or fail if it needs an API feature or hardware and driver support that is unavailable. The outcome depends on the game and the PC. Microsoft documents the fallback, but the available sources do not provide current game-by-game compatibility results or frame-rate measurements, so there is no reliable universal answer or FPS estimate.

Microsoft describes several general advantages manufacturer drivers often provide over the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. These are general benefits, not measured gaming benchmark results:
- Faster performance and smoother video playback.
- Support for higher screen resolutions and multiple monitors.
- Improved battery life.
- Additional graphics features and better stability.
How to check which graphics driver is active
- Check Device Manager: right-click Start, open Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. An entry named Microsoft Basic Display Adapter indicates that Windows is using its generic driver for that adapter.
- Check dxdiag: run dxdiag.exe and look at the device name on the Display tab. If there is more than one Display tab, check each one; a PC can have multiple adapters, and they may not use the same driver.
Intel also notes that Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Adapter can indicate a generic preloaded video driver. If you cannot identify the graphics controller, check the computer maker’s support information.

What to do next
- Identify the GPU and PC model. On a laptop or branded desktop, start with the computer maker’s support page so you can match the driver to that system’s configuration.
- Check Windows Update. Graphics drivers may be included with Windows or offered through Windows Update.
- If no driver appears, consult the GPU maker or computer maker. Use the appropriate manufacturer’s driver guidance for your adapter and system.
- If no suitable driver is available, Microsoft says you can continue using the generic driver. Replacing the graphics card is only an option if the computer is upgradeable; verify system compatibility before considering a replacement.
