In DELTARUNE, ordinary enemies can usually be defeated violently or nonviolently. Fighting with FIGHT or damaging magic gives a temporary boost to your party’s HP, Attack and Magic from Chapter 2 onward, but a recruitable enemy becomes Lost and can never join Castle Town. Sparing an enemy by filling its MERCY meter, or pacifying a TIRED enemy with Ralsei’s PACIFY spell, preserves recruitment and can unlock Castle Town activities and later scene variations.
These choices matter to battles, town development and selected story scenes, but the official game framing does not present ordinary spare-or-defeat decisions as separate endings: DELTARUNE is described as having one ending. The practical choice is between short-term combat strength and long-term recruitment content, with some encounters and bosses following their own rules.

The two ways to finish an ordinary battle
Toby Fox’s official gameplay reminder describes two main defeat methods: violent and nonviolent. The method you use determines whether a recruitable enemy is available for Castle Town and whether your party receives the chapter’s combat-stat bonus.

Use FIGHT or a damaging spell until the target’s HP reaches zero. From Chapter 2 onward, violent victories can raise the party’s HP, Attack and Magic for the remainder of that chapter, subject to an in-game limit. The exact limit is not specified in the official reminder, and the increase is not described as a permanent, across-the-game stat change.

If the defeated monster is recruitable, a violent victory marks it Lost. A Lost enemy cannot be recruited later, so this route trades recruitment progress for immediate battle power.
Nonviolent defeat
Nonviolent wins use ACT commands to make an enemy ready to spare, or make it TIRED so that Ralsei can pacify it. A nonviolent finish does not grant the violent route’s stat increase, but it keeps recruitable enemies available and advances Castle Town’s population.
How SPARE works
ACT commands raise an enemy’s MERCY percentage. When the target reaches 100% MERCY, choose SPARE from the target menu. A spare-ready enemy is marked with a yellow name and a star, so you do not have to guess whether another ACT is required.
- Select the target and choose an ACT that increases its MERCY or otherwise satisfies its personal condition.
- Repeat the required ACT pattern while surviving the enemy’s turns.
- Check the target menu for the yellow name and star at 100% MERCY.
- Choose SPARE rather than FIGHT.
Different monsters have different ACT solutions. Some respond to conversation, jokes, dances or party-member actions; others require a particular sequence. The general rule is the same, but the correct command is encounter-specific.
How TIRED and PACIFY work
Some ACTs, and in some cases taking enough damage, make an enemy TIRED. A tired target is shown in the menu with a blue name and “Zz.” Ralsei can then cast PACIFY to end the encounter nonviolently.

PACIFY requires at least 16% TP. If the party has less TP, defend, graze attacks or use other available actions until the threshold is met, then have Ralsei select PACIFY on the tired enemy. PACIFY is not a universal replacement for SPARE: it only works when the encounter allows tiredness and the target is currently TIRED.
What changes from Chapter 1 to Chapter 2
Chapter 1 has no active recruitment system
Recruitment begins in Chapter 2. Do not apply the later chapter’s “spare to recruit, fight to make Lost” rule directly to Chapter 1 battles. Community documentation reports that Chapter 1 enemies are treated as recruited by default when Chapter 2 starts, while Chapter 2 dialogue can acknowledge violence committed in Chapter 1. That dialogue detail comes from a community-maintained reference rather than the official gameplay summary, so it should be treated as a specific scene detail rather than a universal mechanical rule.

From Chapter 2 onward, spare or pacify enough members of a recruitable enemy type to meet that type’s required recruitment count. The game provides recruitment-progress and completion checks. Once the requirement is met, the inhabitants can move to Castle Town. Defeating one of those enemies violently instead marks that instance, and the associated recruitment opportunity, Lost.
Recruitment and Castle Town consequences
Recruiting monsters makes Castle Town more populated and can open activities or conversations. The official summary describes these effects as contextual rather than as a separate morality route. Failing to recruit certain enemies, or using violence consistently, may produce minor changes in some scenes.
There is no rule that every spared monster unlocks a major branch. Recruitment is tracked by enemy type and by chapter-specific flags, and some activities require a particular collection of recruits. If you want the fullest town, spare or pacify recruitable enemies whenever practical; if you want stronger combat stats for the current chapter, accept that some of those monsters will become Lost.

What carries into the next chapter
The official reminder says a completed chapter can pass collected items, money, equipment and choices into the next chapter. Starting without completion data uses a stated default state instead. That means a spare-or-defeat decision is not necessarily confined to the room where it happened: later chapters can read the recruitment or Lost records stored in the completed save.
Keep a completed chapter save if you want its choices to be recognized. If you begin a later chapter without completion data, do not assume the game can reconstruct every earlier recruitment or violence decision from memory.
Spoiler examples from Chapters 2–4
The following examples reveal later-chapter consequences. They come from a community-maintained DELTARUNE reference and are more specific than the official overview; exact behavior can change with future updates, so treat them as documented examples rather than a complete flag list.
Chapter 2: recruited enemies and the GIGA Queen battle
Community documentation reports that recruited enemies can add HP to the Thrash Machine before the GIGA Queen battle. The cited reference describes a base of 200 HP, an increase of 5 HP per recruit, and a cap of 250 HP. It also records Castle Town scenes and activities that vary with recruitment. These numbers apply to that documented Chapter 2 setup, not to every battle or every later machine.
Chapter 3: Zapper and the spotlight route
The same reference says that losing Zapper removes a spotlight route and can block the chapter’s Egg unless TripTicket was obtained earlier. This is a conditional example of a Lost or missing recruit affecting optional content, not evidence that every violent victory removes a route.

Chapter 4: Pippins, Shadowguys and Tenna
Recruiting Pippins and Shadowguys while losing no Chapter 3 recruits is reported to let them repair Tenna. The reference also describes a Jackenstein rescue scene that depends on no Dark Sanctuary enemies being Lost. These flags illustrate how recruitment records can be checked across chapters.
Do sparing and defeating create different endings?
For ordinary encounters, no separate spare ending or defeat ending is established by the official material. The official game site describes DELTARUNE as having one ending, while also warning that recruitment failures and persistent violence can have minor effects on certain scenes.
That distinction matters. A changed conversation, town activity, route, battle setup or optional rescue is a real consequence, but it is not automatically a new ending. Avoid treating the choice as a simple “good route versus bad route” system unless a particular chapter or encounter explicitly introduces its own route conditions.
Bosses and special encounters do not all follow the ordinary rule
Some bosses cannot be defeated violently, and some cannot be defeated nonviolently. The official reminder instructs players to follow the requirements of the encounter. If SPARE is unavailable, do not assume you missed a hidden ACT; if FIGHT does nothing, do not assume the game is broken.

- Check whether the target can become TIRED before attempting PACIFY.
- Do not spend turns trying to fill MERCY on a boss whose design requires another solution.
- Likewise, do not rely on damage against a boss that is scripted to reject violent defeat.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose sparing or pacifying when you want Castle Town content
Use the nonviolent route for recruitable enemies if your priority is a livelier Castle Town, additional activities and the largest set of recruit-dependent scenes. Track enemy types rather than assuming one successful SPARE completes a category; each type has its own required count.

Choose violence when current-chapter strength matters more
Violent victories are the practical option when you value the chapter’s temporary HP, Attack and Magic increases over future recruitment. Remember that the benefit ends with the chapter and that a recruitable target becomes Lost.
Use a mixed approach deliberately
You do not have to make every battle follow one philosophy. Spare the enemy types whose Castle Town content you want and fight others when the stat boost is more valuable. A mixed record can produce a different set of scenes from an all-recruit or all-violent run, but the official overview does not promise a distinct ending for any ordinary mixture.
A decision checklist before choosing FIGHT
- Is the target recruitable in this chapter?
- Have you already met that enemy type’s recruitment requirement?
- Do you need the chapter’s temporary stat increase for upcoming battles?
- Is the target already marked yellow with a star, meaning SPARE is ready?
- Is it TIRED and marked blue with “Zz,” allowing PACIFY?
- Would making it Lost remove a Castle Town activity or a later optional scene you want to see?
If recruitment is your goal, stop attacking once the target is ready and finish with SPARE or PACIFY. If combat strength is your goal, confirm that the target is not one you still need for a recruitment condition before delivering the final hit.

Sparing and pacifying are the route to recruitment and a fuller Castle Town. Defeating enemies violently is the route to temporary chapter-long stat gains, at the cost of making recruitable enemies Lost. The consequences can reach later scenes and optional content through carried-over chapter data, but ordinary battles are not presented as a system of separate endings. Check each encounter’s specific rules, preserve completion data when you want choices carried forward, and choose based on whether you value town content or immediate battle power more.
