Receiving a Pokémon suspected of being hacked does not automatically mean you will be banned, according to the official policy reviewed—but the policy does not guarantee that an accidental recipient is immune from penalties. The bigger immediate risk is sanctioned competition: a traded Pokémon found to be tampered with can make your tournament team ineligible and may lead to disqualification. If you suspect a problem, keep the details, avoid using it in a Play! Pokémon event, and report concrete suspected cheating to Pokémon Support.
Can you get banned for receiving a hacked Pokémon?
The Pokémon Company’s support notice, dated January 30, 2026, says users found to be using altered data or engaging in troublesome behavior may face restrictions. It does not say that every player who unknowingly receives an altered Pokémon will automatically be banned, and it does not promise that an innocent recipient cannot be affected. So neither “you will be banned” nor “you are completely safe” is supported by the notice.

The notice names possible restrictions on online play in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, trading features in the mobile version of Pokémon HOME, or both the Switch and mobile versions of HOME. The Pokémon Company says restrictions may be temporary or indefinite at its discretion and that additional restrictions may be imposed without notice. Its stated examples should not be treated as a universal description of enforcement in every game, account, or online service. Read the Pokémon Support notice.
What if you bring it to a tournament?
Tournament eligibility is a separate issue from an online account ban. The Play! Pokémon Video Game Rules, Formats, & Penalty Guidelines, dated August 31, 2024, forbid using external devices to modify or create Pokémon in a competitor’s Battle Team. They also say a competitor may be disqualified for tampered Pokémon or items even if they were traded for:

“Competitors found to have Pokémon or items that have been tampered with may receive a Disqualification, regardless of whether the Pokémon or items belong to that competitor or were traded for.”
In other words, a trade does not make a tampered Pokémon acceptable for a sanctioned tournament team. If you suspect alteration, leave it off your team rather than relying on the fact that you did not create it. Check the Play! Pokémon rules and penalty guidelines.

Does a Pokémon HOME trade prove the Pokémon is legitimate?
No. Pokémon HOME offers Wonder Box, GTS, Room Trade, and Friend Trade through its mobile app, but the official feature descriptions do not guarantee that every Pokémon received through those services is legitimate. Wonder Box trades can occur while you are away, and Room Trade can include up to 20 Trainers; you do not know whose Pokémon you will receive until the trade is complete. These features explain how an unexpected Pokémon can arrive, not whether it is authentic. See Pokémon HOME’s trade feature details and its Room Trade information.
HOME also moves Pokémon among compatible games subject to restrictions. A Pokémon’s moves may change when it moves from HOME into a linked game, and compatibility depends on the destination game. A transfer—or a changed moveset after transfer—is not, on its own, proof that the Pokémon is hacked. Do not assume a particular Pokémon will transfer, stay unchanged, or be accepted in every game. Review Pokémon HOME’s transfer information.

Quick Recap
What should you do if a traded Pokémon seems suspicious?
- Keep it off sanctioned competition teams. The Play! Pokémon rules allow disqualification for a tampered Pokémon on a Battle Team even when it was traded to you.
- Keep relevant details. Save any available screenshots and information about the trade or event. Pokémon Support asks people reporting suspected cheating or disruptive conduct to include as much information as possible.
- Report concrete suspected cheating through Pokémon Support. Support says it will review reports, but does not promise a specific outcome or follow-up. Submit a report to Pokémon Support.
- Do not treat suspicion as proof. The official sources cited here do not provide a universal, user-facing test for proving that an individual Pokémon has been altered. A suspicious appearance alone is not conclusive.
