24/7 livestream

What Happens to a YouTube 24/7 Livestream When the VPS Reboots?

A reboot stops the encoder feed. Whether your YouTube livestream resumes depends on boot startup, saved encoder settings, reconnection, and YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls.

Your YouTube feed stops while the VPS is rebooting. It will resume only if the encoder starts again, can access its saved stream settings and media, and reconnects to YouTube. Whether YouTube keeps the broadcast open or ends it depends partly on the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings; a reboot alone does not guarantee a seamless restart.

What happens during a VPS reboot

  1. The encoder stops sending video. While the server and encoder are down, YouTube receives no feed. YouTube considers a stream active when its servers receive data from the encoder, so the interruption lasts until the encoder is back and sending again. There is no established fixed recovery time; it depends on the VPS boot and encoder startup.
  2. The operating system starts. The encoder will not necessarily start just because it was running before the reboot. On a systemd-based Linux VPS, a unit must be configured and enabled for an appropriate startup target; enabling a unit for boot is separate from starting it immediately. See the systemctl manual and systemd documentation on startup targets.
  3. The encoder reconnects, if its setup is available. It needs its YouTube stream URL and key, along with access to its configuration, video source or playlist, and network. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where the URL and key are used: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. YouTube handles the returning feed according to the broadcast settings. Auto-start allows the encoder feed to start the broadcast. If auto-stop is enabled, YouTube’s API guidance says the broadcast ends around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. A reboot lasting long enough may therefore end the broadcast before the encoder returns. The documentation does not guarantee that a later reconnection will preserve the same uninterrupted event. See Manage live stream settings and Google’s Life of a Broadcast.

What determines whether the stream comes back

  • Boot configuration: Is the encoder a boot-enabled service, or does someone have to launch it manually after each reboot?
  • Service readiness: Does its startup command use the right working directory and configuration, and are its media files and network connection available when it starts?
  • Broadcast controls: Are auto-start and auto-stop configured for the intended broadcast pattern? YouTube documents these controls, but does not describe them as a guarantee of seamless recovery through every disconnect.
  • Reconnection: Does the encoder reconnect using the saved YouTube stream URL and key? A reboot does not itself indicate that the key has changed, but the encoder must retain access to its configuration.
  • Outage duration: A brief loss of feed and a longer reboot may produce different outcomes, especially if auto-stop is enabled.

How to check and prevent a failed restart

  1. Check the encoder’s boot behavior. On a systemd VPS, verify that the relevant unit is enabled for startup, not merely running now. After a planned reboot, check its state again. Consult the systemctl manual for the distinction between enabling and starting a unit.
  2. Check what the service needs at boot. Verify its command, working directory, credentials, video source or playlist, and network dependencies. There is no universal encoder service configuration: the correct setup depends on the encoder and VPS image.
  3. Review YouTube’s broadcast settings. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check auto-start and auto-stop and choose them deliberately for your setup. The documented effects are not a promise that every reconnect will keep one continuous broadcast.
  4. Test during a maintenance window. Restart the VPS and watch the encoder service, incoming preview, and stream status. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and checking the preview; its guidance also describes failover testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. See Streaming tips.
  5. Verify receipt, not just process status. A running service does not prove YouTube is receiving video. In the Live Control Room, look for the returning preview and incoming stream status. Google’s broadcast guide defines an active stream as one where YouTube servers are receiving data from the encoder.

Will YouTube keep one continuous broadcast and archive it?

Do not assume it will. Auto-start can allow an encoder feed to start a broadcast, while auto-stop can end one after feed loss; the cited guidance does not promise that a reconnect after a reboot will preserve one uninterrupted event. Check the Live tab and the resulting recording after recovery.

YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24/7 broadcast interrupted by a reboot will be saved as one complete archive. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archiving guidance.

Common problems after reboot

  • Encoder is not running: It may have been launched manually before reboot rather than configured as a boot service. Enable and configure the appropriate service, then test another planned restart.
  • Service runs but YouTube gets no feed: Check the service logs and whether the command can access the stream URL, key, media files, and network after boot. Confirm the incoming preview in YouTube Studio.
  • Broadcast ended during the reboot: If auto-stop was enabled, YouTube may have ended the broadcast around one minute after sending stopped. Review the setting and determine how you want the next feed to start; the documentation does not guarantee the event will continue as before.
  • Service appears healthy but preview is absent: Confirm YouTube is actually receiving encoder data. A local process state alone is not proof that the feed reached YouTube.
  • Expected recording is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive condition covers streams under 12 hours, not every 24/7 stream. Check the Live tab, but do not rely on a rebooted 24/7 stream becoming one complete archive.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not maintain an encoder service on a VPS, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist running as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
