An NHL goalie’s injured-reserve placement does not, by itself, cancel his contract. It changes his eligibility to play and how the club manages its roster; salary and salary-cap treatment are separate questions. The current public NHL guidance sets a seven-day minimum for ordinary IR, while LTIR is a distinct status with a higher absence threshold and different potential cap consequences.
What ordinary injured reserve changes
The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines treat injured reserve as a roster status. For the injury-based route, the player must be unable to play for at least seven days after the injury date; once placed on IR, he is ineligible to play in NHL games for at least seven days. The club’s medical staff determines whether the injury warrants IR under its medical standards.
While on IR, the goalie cannot play in NHL games, but the guidelines allow him to attend club meetings and meals, travel with the team, and participate in practice. The team may replace him on its NHL roster, and he does not count toward the 23-player limit while on IR.
Does the goalie keep getting paid?
IR is not a contract termination, and an injury does not by itself establish that the goalie loses his salary. But being under contract, receiving particular payments on particular dates, and having those amounts count in team cap calculations are not interchangeable claims. Exact salary timing, signing-bonus terms, insurance and any player-specific conditions depend on the Standard Player’s Contract (SPC) and the operative collective bargaining agreement.

The published 2013 NHL/NHLPA agreement states in Article 50.10(a) that salary and bonuses paid to unfit players on an NHL active roster, IR or non-roster count toward the club’s cap-related salary measures and the players’ share, subject to the agreement’s long-term injury/illness exception. That is the published 2013 wording, not confirmation of the precise text governing every 2026-27 case. The 2025 ratification announcement says the four-year CBA runs through 2029-30, and NHL.com reported that the new terms take effect in 2026-27; consult the current agreement and the player’s SPC for a precise payment or cap determination.
Ordinary IR versus LTIR
| Question | Ordinary IR | LTIR |
|---|---|---|
| Absence threshold | At least seven days under NHL public guidance for the injury-based IR route. | At least 10 games and 24 days, as reported by NHL.com on October 3, 2026. |
| Roster treatment | The club may replace the player; he does not count toward the 23-player limit under NHL public guidance. | The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer says the player must also be on IR. |
| Potential cap effect | The published 2013 CBA says salary and bonuses for unfit players on IR count in club measures, subject to its LTIR exception. | The club may qualify for a higher spending limit under the long-term exception; the amount depends on the circumstances. |
| Contract effect | IR itself is not described as ending the SPC. | LTIR concerns injury and team cap treatment; individual contract payment terms still depend on the SPC and current agreement. |
The LTIR threshold above is from NHL.com’s October 3, 2026 report on Aleksander Barkov’s placement, not a quotation of the full operative CBA. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes LTIR as requiring the player to be on IR and explains the potential higher spending limit. Ordinary IR alone does not automatically provide LTIR relief.

Which cap figures apply in 2026-27?
For the 2026-27 League Year, NHL Public Relations announced a payroll range of $76.9 million at the lower limit, $90.4 million at the midpoint and $104 million at the upper limit. These are league-wide payroll limits, not an estimate of any particular goalie’s salary or of the cap space a team might gain by placing him on LTIR. The published 2013 CBA text should not be silently treated as verified 2026-30 language when calculating a club’s position.

What a goalie’s IR status does not tell you
- It does not show the goalie’s exact pay schedule or whether a particular installment has been paid.
- It does not establish that ordinary IR creates LTIR cap relief.
- It does not specify the player’s insurance coverage or settle any player-specific contract terms.
- It does not guarantee a return date; IR eligibility and actual medical readiness are separate matters.
