What Happens to Banned Cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel?

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Banned cards do not disappear from Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. A card marked Forbidden becomes illegal in the Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck, but it remains in your digital collection. Limited cards are restricted to one copy and Semi-Limited cards to two copies across those decks.

Your practical choices are to keep an illegal or excess copy for a possible future use, or dismantle an eligible copy for Craft Points. Whether dismantling pays a special bonus depends on when the copy was obtained compared with the Forbidden & Limited List update notice, as well as its rarity, finish and copy status.

What changes when a card is banned?

Master Duel’s Forbidden & Limited List regulates what can be played in a Duel. The restriction changes a card’s deck legality; it does not delete the card from your account. A card you already own stays as a collection item until you choose to dismantle it.

That distinction matters because “banned” is commonly used for three different list outcomes. Forbidden is a complete prohibition in the three constructed deck areas. Limited and Semi-Limited are copy caps, not total bans. The caps apply across the relevant decks, so you cannot place one copy in the Main Deck and another in the Extra Deck to get around a limit.

#1 Best Overall
List status Maximum copies Deck areas covered What it means in practice
Forbidden 0 Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck The card cannot be used in those decks.
Limited 1 Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck You may use one copy in total across the relevant decks.
Semi-Limited 2 Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck You may use up to two copies in total across the relevant decks.

Forbidden: no legal deck copies

Konami’s list rules state that a Forbidden card cannot be used in the Main Deck, Extra Deck or Side Deck. Owning three copies does not create a legal exception: all three remain collection items, but none can be registered for a Duel while that status applies.

Limited: one copy across decks

A Limited card is still playable. The restriction is one copy in total across the covered deck areas. If you own more than one, the extra copies are not deleted; you must decide whether to keep them or dismantle them.

Semi-Limited: two copies across decks

A Semi-Limited card permits two copies in total. A third copy is surplus for a deck built under that list, but it remains in your collection and can be handled through the same keep-or-dismantle decision.

Do banned cards disappear from your collection?

No. The documented effect of a list change is on playability, not ownership. Master Duel is a digital card game with more than 10,000 different cards, and a card that becomes Forbidden remains part of that digital inventory unless you dismantle it yourself.

There is no evidence that a list update automatically removes every copy or converts every copy into Craft Points. The safe assumption is that your existing copies stay visible and usable for collection purposes, while the list determines whether they can be placed in a legal deck.

A future list could change a card’s status, but neither Konami’s list description nor the reviewed policy promises when a Forbidden card will become Limited, Semi-Limited or legal again. Keep a copy if you value that possibility, an alternate event format, or the card as part of your collection.

How dismantling works

Dismantling is the practical way to convert an unwanted card into Craft Points. The card is removed from your collection and the game awards the amount shown by the dismantling interface. A special Dismantle Bonus may apply to qualifying cards affected by a list update.

Why the displayed amount is the important number

Do not calculate a refund from the card’s rarity alone. The return can depend on whether the copy qualifies for the update’s bonus, when it was generated, its finish and whether it is the first qualifying copy or an additional copy. Master Duel Meta’s July 18, 2025 report explains the policy with Ultra Rare examples: a qualifying first existing copy can receive a full 30 UR Craft Point refund, while a card crafted after the announcement is treated as a normal dismantle worth the standard 10 Craft Points. Those figures are examples from that report, not a universal current payout table for every rarity, finish or copy.

Normal, Glossy and Royal finishes

Check the specific copy on the dismantle screen. Normal, Glossy and Royal finishes can be treated differently, and the exact return depends on the copy’s eligibility. Two copies of the same card should not be assumed to produce the same number merely because they share a name and rarity.

Why the list-update notice date matters

The bonus is tied to the timing of the list announcement, not simply to the date on which a card eventually becomes illegal. In its July 18, 2025 report, Master Duel Meta said the relevant changes would take effect July 25, 2025 and quoted the policy as follows: “Cards newly elegible for the Dismantle Bonus generated AFTER the Forbidden & Limited List Update notice is released will NOT BE ELEGIBLE for the Dismantle Bonus.” The quotation preserves the policy’s spelling.

Copies generated before the notice

An existing copy generated before the notice may qualify when the update makes that card newly eligible. The reported example is a first qualifying copy receiving the full 30 UR Craft Point refund. Additional copies follow the rules stated for that update, so inspect each copy rather than assuming every duplicate receives the first-copy amount.

Copies generated after the notice

A copy crafted after the announcement is excluded from the new bonus under the July 2025 policy. Even if the card is later affected by the announced list, that post-notice craft is treated as an ordinary dismantle; the report gives 10 Craft Points as the standard example for the card discussed.

What “generated” means for your decision

The relevant question is when that particular copy entered your account relative to the notice. A card you crafted after the announcement should not be treated like an older copy simply because you owned another copy before the announcement. The dismantle screen and the in-game announcement are the final checks for the update-specific treatment.

Should you keep or dismantle a banned card?

Use the card’s legality, timing and your own deck plans together. A simple decision process avoids throwing away a copy that later becomes useful or missing a better Craft Point return.

  1. Identify the status. Confirm whether the card is Forbidden, Limited or Semi-Limited on Master Duel’s own list. Do not infer the status from a paper Yu-Gi-Oh! release or an older list.
  2. Count your legal copies. Zero copies are legal for Forbidden, one for Limited and two for Semi-Limited. Any copies above the cap are surplus for the current list.
  3. Check the announcement timing. Determine whether each copy was generated before or after the list-update notice connected with the bonus.
  4. Inspect the dismantle screen. Look at the amount offered for the exact copy, including its finish and any bonus indication. The policy is update-specific, so this screen is more reliable than a generic Craft Point chart.
  5. Choose your objective. Keep the card if you expect a future use, an alternate event format or a possible reversal. Dismantle surplus copies when the shown bonus is worthwhile and you would rather spend the Craft Points on another deck.
  6. Confirm only after checking every duplicate. Different copies can have different eligibility, so review them individually before final confirmation.

Worked examples

A Forbidden card you crafted before the notice

You own an older copy that was generated before the relevant list announcement. The card becomes Forbidden, and the dismantle screen identifies it as eligible for the update bonus. Keeping it preserves a collection item and a possible future option; dismantling it may provide the full bonus described for the eligible copy. The choice is yours because the card is not automatically removed.

The same card crafted after the notice

You craft another copy after the announcement, then consider dismantling it when the card is affected. Under the July 2025 policy described by Master Duel Meta, that post-notice copy is not eligible for the new Dismantle Bonus and is treated as a standard dismantle. The report’s Ultra Rare example is 10 Craft Points rather than the 30-point full refund example.

A Limited card with two copies

Both copies remain in your collection, but only one can be used across the Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck while the card is Limited. You can keep the second copy for a possible status change or dismantle it after checking its individual return.

A Semi-Limited card with three copies

All three copies remain owned, while the current deck cap is two. The third copy is surplus for a legal build. Its value depends on the copy’s timing, finish and the amount shown when you choose to dismantle it.

How to verify a card before dismantling

Master Duel’s own information should control your decision because list status and bonus eligibility can change together. Use this checklist whenever a notice affects a card you own:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open the current in-game Forbidden & Limited information and read the card’s status.
  • Read the associated announcement, including its release date and any stated effective date.
  • Review each copy’s generation timing if you are considering a Dismantle Bonus.
  • Open the card’s dismantle interface and note the exact Craft Point return.
  • Check whether the copy is Normal, Glossy or Royal and whether it is treated as a first or additional qualifying copy.
  • Cancel the action if the displayed amount is lower than expected and you would rather keep the card.

This approach prevents a common error: treating a bonus mentioned for one update, rarity or finish as a permanent refund rule for every banned card.

Common misconceptions and failure points

“Banned” means the card was deleted

Forbidden means illegal in the three deck areas. It does not mean the digital collection item vanished. The owner still has the keep-or-dismantle choice.

Every banned copy receives a full refund

The reported bonus depends on update eligibility and acquisition timing. A post-notice craft can receive only the standard dismantle value described in the policy example, and duplicate-copy rules can differ from the first qualifying copy.

A paper-game list answers the Master Duel question

Master Duel has its own Forbidden & Limited List. Konami specifically describes that list as regulating cards banned or limited in its Duels, so paper-TCG dates and statuses should not be transferred automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limited means unusable

Limited allows one copy, and Semi-Limited allows two. Only Forbidden removes the card from legal use in the Main Deck, Extra Deck and Side Deck.

The rarity determines the refund by itself

Rarity is only one part of the calculation. Timing, finish and copy eligibility can affect what the dismantle screen offers.

What Master Duel’s free-to-play model changes—and what it does not

Konami describes Master Duel as “An authentic Yu-Gi-Oh! Digital card game!” and states that it is free to play with in-game purchases available. That model explains why Craft Points and dismantling matter: they are in-game collection systems, not a physical-card buyback. It does not change the list rules. A digital card can remain owned while being Forbidden, and the only documented conversion route discussed here is dismantling an eligible copy for Craft Points.

Bottom line for a banned card

A Forbidden card stays in your Master Duel collection but cannot be used in the Main Deck, Extra Deck or Side Deck. Limited cards remain playable at one copy, and Semi-Limited cards at two. Before dismantling, compare the copy’s acquisition date with the list-update notice, inspect its finish and eligibility, and rely on the amount shown in Master Duel’s dismantle screen. Keep the card when future use matters more to you than immediate Craft Points; dismantle it when the displayed return and your deck plans make the conversion worthwhile.
