Your duplicate Pokémon TCG Pocket cards do not have a documented automatic “new-set” fate. Official guidance does not describe them being deleted, converted into universal points, or reset when an expansion launches. They remain in your collection until you use an eligible feature such as flair, trading, or sharing.
The important launch changes concern the new expansion’s identity, its separate Pack Point balance, and a reset of favorited booster packs. Treat each expansion as its own resource pool, and check the in-game news for any event-specific rule that could change this in a later update.

What changes when a new expansion launches?
Pokémon TCG Pocket treats a new set as a distinct expansion rather than as a replacement for the cards you already own. The Gameplay FAQ identifies expansions with separate codes, including examples such as A1, A1a, and A2. Those codes matter when you are looking at Pack Points, booster preferences, or an action that asks you to choose an expansion.

The expansion receives its own identity
A launch adds another catalog of cards and packs. Your earlier cards continue to belong to the expansion in which they were released, while the new cards are organized under the new code. This separation lets the game distinguish, for example, cards from A1 from cards in A2 even when they have similar names, artwork themes, or rarity categories.

Pack-point balances stay separated
Pack Points earned by opening packs from one expansion can be exchanged only for cards that appear in that same expansion. Points earned from an earlier expansion therefore do not become a general balance for the new set. The restriction is attached to the expansion that generated the points, not to the date on which you spend them.
Booster favorites are reset
When a new booster pack is added, the Gameplay FAQ says that favorited booster packs are automatically reset. This affects your saved preference for which packs you marked as favorites. It does not describe a change to the cards already listed in My Cards, and it should not be interpreted as an ownership reset.
Cards registered in multiple expansions can require a choice
Some cards can be registered in more than one expansion. For trade or share actions involving one of those cards, the FAQ provides an in-game expansion selector. Selecting the intended expansion tells the game which expansion registration you want the action to use; it does not create or remove a second physical copy in your collection.

What happens to the duplicate cards already in My Cards?
Official support material does not specify an automatic deletion, conversion, or compensation process for duplicate cards at a set launch. In practical terms, the number shown for a card remains under your control. It changes when you deliberately use a documented feature that transfers or consumes a copy.

That distinction is useful because several different systems can change what you see without being the same event:
- A new expansion adds another card pool and a new expansion code.
- Pack Points remain associated with the expansion where they were earned.
- Favoriting preferences can be cleared when a new booster is introduced.
- Trading or sharing can reduce the number of copies shown in My Cards.
- Spending copies for flair changes the copies available for future actions.
None of those launch behaviors, on its own, is a rule that removes every old duplicate when a set arrives.
Why keep duplicate cards instead of spending them?
Extra copies have retention value as well as cosmetic value. Keeping them preserves options for future decks, eligible trades, and later sharing decisions. The official material does not promise that every duplicate will become useful in a future feature, so retaining a copy is the only way to guarantee that you still possess it if your plans change.
Deck and collection flexibility
A duplicate can remain available for a deck, a second deck, or a later change to your preferred list. The game’s set structure also means that a card from an older expansion is not interchangeable with a Pack Point balance from a newer one. Keeping physical copies avoids relying on a resource that is locked to the wrong expansion.

Trade preparation
Trading is governed by eligibility rules rather than by a simple “extra copy” switch. The Trading FAQ describes conditions such as matching rarity. If a card has flair, the corresponding flair conditions also apply to the trade. Before spending a copy, consider whether it is one of the copies you would need to satisfy those requirements.
How can you use duplicates for flair?
The official collecting guide says that players with many copies of a single card can use them to obtain flair. Flair is a cosmetic customization connected to the card, so this is the clearest documented way to turn surplus copies into a visual benefit rather than another expansion currency.
What spending a copy means
Using a copy for flair reduces the copies available for other actions. Decide how many copies you want to reserve first, then spend only the remainder through the flair option shown by the game. The exact number required can depend on the card and the flair option presented in the current version; do not assume that every card has the same cost.
Flair remains after the last copy is given away
The Trading FAQ states that flair does not disappear if you give away your last copy of the card. However, you cannot view that flair until you obtain another copy. In other words, the cosmetic unlock is retained even while the card itself is temporarily absent from your collection.

How do trading and sharing affect your count?
Trading
An eligible trade transfers a card under the game’s published restrictions. Matching rarity is one stated requirement, and a card carrying flair must meet the corresponding flair conditions. A card that appears in more than one expansion may also require you to choose the expansion registration in the selector provided for the action.
Because trading is a transfer rather than a launch conversion, the copy leaves your available collection only when the trade completes. If you are protecting a minimum number for a deck or for another trade, count those reserved copies before confirming.
Sharing
Sharing is another documented action that can reduce the number displayed in My Cards. It is separate from the automatic favorite reset that occurs when a booster is added. If your count changes after you use sharing, that is the result of the sharing action, not an effect of the new-set release itself.

There is no universal best choice. Use a simple priority order based on what you value and on the rules that apply to the specific card.

For a conservative approach, reserve the copies you need for current decks and possible trades, then direct only genuinely surplus copies toward flair or sharing. This preserves flexibility without assuming that a future launch will reimburse you for copies you spent.
A practical checklist before and after a set launch
- Identify the expansion. Note the new set’s code, such as A2, so you can tell its cards and Pack Points apart from earlier expansions.
- Review Pack Points by expansion. Spend an older balance only on cards appearing in that same expansion; do not plan to use it for the incoming set.
- Check your reserved copies. For cards used in decks or likely trades, decide on a minimum number to keep before selecting flair, trade, or share.
- Inspect cards with multiple registrations. If an action presents an expansion selector, choose the registration you intend rather than assuming the game will infer it.
- Recheck booster favorites. After the new booster is added, set your favorite packs again because the previous favorites may have been reset.
- Read the launch notice. Use the in-game news attached to that expansion as the final authority for event-specific rules or limited-time changes.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“The favorite reset deleted my cards.”
Favorites are a preference list for booster packs. The documented reset concerns that list, not the ownership records shown in My Cards. Check the card collection separately before concluding that copies are missing.
“Old Pack Points should work on the new set.”
Pack Points are not a universal wallet. The points remain usable for cards appearing in the expansion that produced them, so a new set does not broaden an old balance.

Duplicate status alone does not establish that a card can be traded, shared, or spent for flair. Rarity, flair status, expansion registration, and the current action’s eligibility rules can affect what you may do.
“Giving away the final copy destroys its flair.”
According to the Trading FAQ, the flair persists. You simply cannot view it until another copy of that card is back in your collection.
What could change in a future expansion?
The published guidance does not promise a universal duplicate-conversion or compensation rule for every future set. A later patch, event, or regional notice could add a different mechanic, so treat the launch announcement for each expansion as the authoritative check.
Unless that notice says otherwise, plan around the established separation: expansions have their own codes, Pack Points stay with the expansion that earned them, and copies change hands only through an action you initiate and are allowed to complete. That approach prevents a favorite-pack reset or a new expansion code from being mistaken for an automatic wipe of your collection.
