A game leaving a store or subscription catalog does not, by itself, mean that existing owners lose access or that online modes have stopped working. Those modes can disappear when the publisher retires the game’s online services; offline play, redownloads, and virtual currency each follow title-specific rules.
Delisting is not the same as a server shutdown
“Delisted” can mean a game is no longer sold, or that it has been removed from a subscription catalog. Neither status alone tells you whether its online services are still running. Electronic Arts’ service-update policy and service-updates list distinguish service retirements from EA Play catalog removals. Check the notice for the specific game rather than treating store availability as a signal of server status.

The reverse distinction matters too: a game may remain installed or be redownloadable while some or all of its online features have stopped working. Store status, server status, mode availability, and ownership or redownload rules are separate questions.
What changes when servers are retired?
Modes that rely on publisher servers may become unavailable, along with related features such as online leagues, multiplayer, community sharing, or online-only progression. A mode’s name is not enough to establish whether it will survive: look for the publisher’s explicit list of unavailable and retained modes.

There is no universal sports-game server lifespan established by the notices cited here. EA says it typically considers retiring older online services when the player count falls below 1% of peak online players across all EA titles. That is EA’s general explanation, not proof that a specific game was shut down at that threshold or a rule that applies to other publishers.
What the Madden, NHL, and NBA 2K notices show
These examples illustrate why the exact game and date matter. NBA 2K25’s dates below are scheduled future changes stated in a notice updated October 2, 2026; check the live notice for any revisions.

Can you keep playing offline?
Sometimes. Publishers may leave offline modes playable after retiring online services, but the surviving modes differ by game and platform. EA’s general policy says some games may remain playable offline after services are withdrawn; it does not guarantee that every game will retain offline play or that every item or currency balance will remain usable.

The examples show the difference: EA explicitly retained all offline modes for NHL 14–18 on the listed consoles and Madden NFL 20 offline modes on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. For NBA 2K25, 2K names four modes that remain playable offline. Treat those statements as game-specific, not as a promise for another release in the same series.
Can you redownload a delisted game you already own?
Do not assume that a store removal erases an existing license, but do not assume redownload access either. Check the publisher’s notice and the relevant platform account or disc requirements. 2K explicitly says existing NBA 2K25 owners can redownload the game and play offline after the scheduled changes. That assurance is specific to NBA 2K25; it does not establish redownload terms for other games or platforms.

Check currency, items, and progress separately
Virtual currency may have rules distinct from both online access and offline play. NBA 2K25 players will no longer be able to earn Virtual Currency from January 1, 2027, according to 2K’s notice. For Madden NFL 20, EA said Madden Points purchases stopped January 15, 2024, and unused balances could not be used after April 15, 2024.
EA’s general policy says inventory of virtual currency or in-game items may continue to be usable in some cases, depending on the game and the services retired. That is not a universal guarantee. The notices cited here do not establish that online progress or saves can be recovered after a service ends, so check the particular game’s terms instead of assuming.

How to check a specific sports game
- Find the publisher’s service notice. Search by the exact title and platform, then note whether services are active, already retired, or scheduled to end.
- Check the store or subscription notice separately. Confirm whether the change is a sale delisting, a subscription-catalog removal, or both; neither alone confirms a server shutdown.
- Read the mode and platform details. Look for explicit lists of modes that stop working or remain playable, plus any console-generation or PC-specific limits.
- Verify ownership and redownload terms. Check what the publisher says for existing owners, then confirm any platform-account, disc, or download requirements that apply to your copy.
- Check currency and items on their own. Look for separate end dates for purchases, earning, spending, or continued use; do not infer one rule from another game.
