When your PlayStation Plus membership expires, you can no longer play the monthly games you claimed through the subscription. Canceling auto-renewal does not end access straight away: your benefits continue until the paid period runs out. If you later buy a new membership, PlayStation says access to previously downloaded monthly games returns, provided you use the account that claimed them.
Canceling is not the same as losing access
Turning off automatic renewal stops the next payment; it does not immediately end your current membership. PlayStation Support says benefits remain active until the end of the subscription period you have already paid for. You can keep playing claimed monthly games during that time.
To check when that period ends, view your subscription details in Account Management or the subscription settings on your PS5 or PS4. The exact cancellation and subscription-management options can vary by region.
What changes when the membership expires?
Monthly games are a membership benefit, not permanent purchases. PlayStation Support explains that when a PlayStation Plus subscription ends, access to benefits such as monthly games ends too. A game may still appear in your library, but the listing does not mean you retain the right to launch it without an active membership.

PlayStation’s UK cancellation guidance also distinguishes monthly games from a few other items: redeemed PlayStation Plus packs and avatars, and purchases made at a PlayStation Plus discount, remain yours after the subscription ends. That retention does not apply to monthly games themselves.
What happens if you rejoin?
PlayStation’s membership guide says that if your membership expires and you return later, you regain access to content previously downloaded through PlayStation Plus. In practical terms, resubscribe using the same PlayStation account that claimed the games. The guide does not establish exceptions for games claimed on a different account.

Monthly games are different from the game catalogs
PlayStation’s U.S. plan comparison lists monthly games with Essential, Extra, and Premium. Extra and Premium also include the Game Catalog, while Premium includes the Classics Catalog. Those catalog benefits are separate from monthly games; the access rule described here is specifically about games claimed as monthly games, so do not assume that a catalog title follows the same retention or return conditions.
