In a normal ARC Raiders raid, final elimination costs the gear and loot you are carrying outside your Safe Pocket. You keep items in Safe Pocket slots, but loot found topside is secured only if you extract successfully. The official material reviewed does not say that ordinary death resets persistent quest progress; an Expedition is a separate, broader progression reset with its own rules.
What do you lose when you die in a raid?
If you are fully eliminated, assume that weapons, equipment, consumables, and loot outside your Safe Pocket are lost for that run. The Epic Games Store beginner guide identifies Safe Pocket contents as the exception. It also notes that the Free Loadout has no Safe Pocket slots.

Being downed is not necessarily the same as being eliminated. The guide says a downed Raider may still crawl into an extraction point and return to Speranza with loot if opponents have not fully incapacitated them. Once elimination occurs, do not count on recovering exposed gear.
Do quest progress and quest items reset on death?
The official sources cited here do not establish that ordinary death wipes persistent quest progress. They also do not spell out a universal rule for every kind of objective, such as collected quest items, visited locations, or kills. Avoid assuming that all objective progress is saved—or lost—without checking the instructions for that specific objective.

Some objectives or event rewards can be explicitly tied to extraction. For example, Embark’s June 16, 2026 Live Update 1.33.0 says relic Merit is claimed only when you successfully extract with the relic; Merits earned through XP are converted automatically. That is a rule for this event reward, not proof that every quest resets or requires extraction.
What changes if you extract successfully?
Extraction is what secures the items you collected topside. The Epic guide describes Raider Hatches as requiring a key, while regular exits—including Airshafts, Subway Tunnels, and Cargo Elevators—can be noisy and may attract ARC enemies or other Raiders. Weigh the value of what you are carrying against the risk of searching for more before choosing whether to stay in the raid.

How does an Expedition differ from dying?
An Expedition is a voluntary character-progression reset, not the consequence of losing a normal raid. Embark’s October 9, 2025 Expedition Project overview described losing character progression such as levels, skills, inventory, workshop, and crafting capabilities on departure, while retaining cosmetics, awards, achievements, and rankings.
The terms changed for the fifth Expedition: Embark’s August 21, 2026 announcement introduced an option not to reset quest progress. It also said Expeditions would pause until early 2027 for larger changes. These are dated Expedition details, not a rule for ordinary death. Review the current in-game departure screen and reset choices before leaving.

Ways to reduce the cost of a failed run
- Put the most valuable eligible item you need to protect in a Safe Pocket before deploying.
- Use a Free Loadout for a low-risk resource run if appropriate, but account for its lack of a Safe Pocket and fewer inventory slots.
- Check the exact quest or event objective for extraction requirements instead of treating one event’s rule as universal.
- Leave when the value of your carried loot outweighs the benefit of searching another area; consider that regular exits can be noisy and hatch access requires a key.
- Before an Expedition, read the current departure screen carefully, including the quest-reset option if one is offered.
