Steam Next Fest demos do not all disappear when the festival ends. Valve leaves the decision to each developer. A demo may remain downloadable and playable, or the developer may deactivate it, which blocks new downloads and Steam launches even for people who installed it. Deactivation can later be reversed.
There is no automatic Next Fest takedown
Steam Next Fest is a time-limited promotional event, but the event schedule does not impose a universal expiration date on its demos. The developer decides whether the demo should stay public after the festival build has served its purpose. Some teams leave a demo live for weeks, months, or until the full game releases. Others turn it off as soon as the event ends because the build is outdated, contains content they no longer want public, or is no longer compatible with their release plan.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes the policy as a choice rather than a requirement. Its guidance says: “While it’s up to you to decide what works best for your release strategy, we encourage you to consider leaving your demo up beyond the conclusion of the Steam Next Fest you joined. Many players have expressed disappointment when demos disappear immediately, so communicate to players if you plan to deactivate your demo so they can prioritize playing it accordingly.” That wording explains both outcomes you may see in practice: continued access is encouraged, but it is not guaranteed.
No authoritative percentage shows how many Next Fest demos remain available. Availability varies by game and by the developer’s communication, not by a published Steam-wide retention rate.

What changes when a developer deactivates a demo?
Deactivation affects Steam access in two separate ways: it stops new downloads and it stops launching the demo through the Steam client. Installing the files before the cutoff does not create a permanent license to keep playing them.

Steam’s documented wording is explicit: “Deactivating a demo will prevent players from downloading or launching your demo. Players that already have your demo in their library will continue to see the demo (so they may uninstall it) but cannot launch it again.” The library entry therefore should not be treated as proof that the files are still usable.
What happens to a demo you already downloaded?
It can remain visible without remaining playable
If you installed a demo and the developer later deactivates it, Steam can leave the title in your library. You may still see its entry and uninstall the local files, but the normal Steam launch path is disabled. Reinstalling from that library entry does not bypass the deactivation because the restriction concerns the demo’s current Steam status, not just whether files are present on your drive.

The safest assumption is that a download gives you access only while the demo is active. A developer can disable the demo after you install it, and Steam can then prevent launching it. This is why a large download, a completed installation, or a shortcut on your desktop should not be interpreted as permanent ownership.

A narrow technical exception exists outside normal Steam behavior
Steamworks warns that a disabled demo might still start outside Steam if it does not require Steam and does not check for a current license. That is an edge case, not a supported promise. Many demos use Steam services, launch checks, or other dependencies, so an executable that appears to open directly may still fail, lose online features, or behave differently from the official client launch. The normal in-client result after deactivation is that Steam will not let you launch the demo.
How to tell whether a demo is still available
- Open the demo’s Steam library entry. If Steam offers the normal Play or Install control, the demo is currently exposed to your account. If the control is missing, disabled, or produces an availability message, access may have been withdrawn.
- Check the demo’s store presence. A demo can be unavailable for new downloads even if you still see an old library entry. Conversely, a developer may change how the demo is promoted without removing the underlying package.
- Read the developer’s latest announcement. Developers sometimes state that the event build will remain live, give a removal date, or explain that a revised demo will replace it. Treat a specific announcement as more useful than assumptions based on the festival calendar.
- Try the official Steam launch path once. Do not rely on a desktop shortcut or copied files as evidence of continued support. The relevant question is whether Steam authorizes the demo now.
If timing matters—for example, you have only one evening to play—look for a takedown notice before postponing the download. Valve specifically warns that players are disappointed when demos disappear immediately and asks developers to communicate planned deactivation so players can prioritize them.
What players should do before Next Fest ends
Play the demos with uncertain futures first
Prioritize games whose developers mention a limited event build, a closing date, or no post-event availability. A demo that remains live is convenient, but its continued status can still change. Finish the experience you care about rather than assuming you can return later.

Add the full game to your wishlist
Use the demo’s link to the full game’s Steam store page and add the full release to your wishlist while you are evaluating it. Steam’s demo documentation describes a prominent link from a demo to the full game’s page, including a library link. A wishlist preserves your interest in the commercial release even if the preview build is later disabled; it does not preserve the demo itself.

Record useful information without treating it as a workaround
- Note the developer’s stated availability window and any announced cutoff.
- Save your feedback, screenshots, or settings locally if you want a record of the experience.
- Keep the demo installed only if you expect to play it soon; installation does not defeat a later Steam deactivation.
- Use official updates for replacement builds, patches, or reactivation news.
Do not assume that backing up the installation, creating a non-Steam shortcut, or copying the executable will preserve normal access. Those actions do not change the demo’s Steam status and may not work when the build requires Steam services or license validation.
Why developers deactivate event demos
Steam gives developers discretion because a Next Fest demo is often a specific snapshot rather than a permanent product. A team may want to replace an event build with a newer version, remove unfinished content, reduce support requests from an obsolete build, or align the demo with a changed release strategy. Deactivation is therefore a publishing control, not a statement that everyone who downloaded the demo has lost the files from their computer.
The control is reversible. Steamworks lets a developer release a demo, deactivate it for a limited-time event, and reactivate it later. Reactivation can restore access without requiring the team to create an entirely new store identity, although the developer remains responsible for the build and its support.

A developer can remove the demo button or link from the full game’s store page without disabling the demo package itself. That presentation change may make the demo harder for new visitors to find, but it is not the same operation as deactivation. The Steamworks documentation treats the two controls separately: one changes how the demo is surfaced on the store page; the other prevents downloading and launching.

Can a deactivated demo come back?
Yes. Reactivation is an available Steamworks action, so a demo that disappeared after Next Fest is not necessarily gone forever. A developer might bring it back unchanged, publish a corrected build, or restore it as part of a later promotion. There is no guarantee that reactivation will happen, and Steam does not promise a standard timetable for it.
If you want to know whether a particular demo will return, watch the developer’s Steam announcements and the demo’s store page rather than repeatedly reinstalling an old local copy. A new announcement can also clarify whether the original event build has been replaced.
Steam’s post-event recap is not a demo-restoration program
Shortly after each Next Fest, Steam launches a Wrap-up page featuring games with the most-played demos from that edition. The recap is a visibility feature: it highlights popular festival games after the event. Inclusion in the Wrap-up does not establish that a demo remains downloadable or playable. A featured game can still have a deactivated demo, and a game that remains live does not need to appear in the most-played selection.
Common situations and the right expectation
“I installed it, but Steam will not start it now.”
The most likely explanation is deactivation. Confirm the demo’s current announcement and store status. Because Steam keeps the library entry visible for existing owners, seeing the title there does not contradict the launch block.

“The demo page vanished from the full game’s store page.”
That change alone does not prove the package was deactivated. Developers can remove the demo button separately. Check the library entry and official communication before concluding that access has ended.
“The executable opens when I run it directly.”
This matches Steam’s documented edge case only if the demo does not require Steam and does not check for a current license. Direct launching is outside the normal supported client flow; online functions, achievements, cloud saves, or updates may not work, and another build may behave differently.
“The developer said it would stay up, but I cannot download it.”
Look for a newer announcement, a replacement demo, regional availability differences, or a change from the event build to another package. A prior plan is not a permanent guarantee because the developer controls the demo’s status.
“I missed the festival. Can I still try the demo?”
Possibly. Search the game’s Steam page and developer announcements. The end of Next Fest does not itself remove every demo, but a particular developer may have deactivated its build immediately or on a separately announced date.
What the policy means for planning your playtime
For players, the practical rule is simple: treat a Next Fest demo as time-sensitive unless the developer clearly says otherwise. Download and play it during the event when possible, wishlist the full game, and check for a stated cutoff before delaying. For developers, leaving a demo available can serve players who discover the game after the festival, while deactivation offers control over an outdated or intentionally limited build. Either choice is supported by Steamworks, provided the team communicates its plan clearly.
The decisive distinction is not whether the demo was once installed; it is whether the developer currently has the demo active. A live demo can accept new downloads and launches. A deactivated demo can remain visible in libraries while blocking both actions, with reactivation available if the developer later chooses to restore it.
