Usually, your save stays put. If you buy the digital copy of the same PS5 game on the same console and account, changing from disc ownership to digital ownership does not by itself delete your existing save. Saves are managed separately from game installs. The important caveat: Sony does not guarantee that every title’s disc and digital editions share saves, so check that you’re installing the same game version and consult the publisher if the game has separate editions or regional builds.
Same PS5 game: disc to a separately purchased digital copy
On the same PS5, sign in to the account you used with the disc copy, download the digital game, and check whether your progress appears. Sony’s support documentation treats saved data separately from game data, so deleting or downloading a game is not, by itself, the same as deleting its save.
To inspect your saved data, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. Confirm that the downloaded game is the same PS5 version as the disc game. If the save is not recognized, check the game’s publisher guidance for edition or region-specific differences before assuming the save has been erased. Sony’s general support pages do not promise universal save compatibility for every title’s disc and digital editions.
PS4 disc to PS5 version: a different save question
Moving from a PS4 game to its PS5 version is a cross-generation conversion, not simply a change in how you own the same PS5 version. Whether a PS4 save can be used by the PS5 version is up to the game’s developer and varies by title, as Sony explained in its PS5 FAQ published November 9, 2020.

If you are upgrading an eligible PS4 disc game to its digital PS5 version, the upgrade pathway has separate requirements. Sony says you need a PS5 with a disc drive and must insert the PS4 disc each time you play the upgraded digital game. The disc must be from the same country or region as your PlayStation account. These conditions apply to the eligible disc-upgrade offer, not to a separately purchased digital PS5 game. See Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade instructions.

- PS Plus cloud storage: A subscription is required. PS5 saves can auto-sync when the relevant setting is enabled. PS4 saves uploaded to cloud storage must be downloaded manually to PS5 storage. See Sony’s cloud-storage instructions.
- USB storage: Sony’s current guidance allows PS4 saved data to be copied to USB; PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to USB. Check PS5 storage management for the available options.
- Console data transfer: Sony provides a route to transfer data from a PS4 or another PS5 to your PS5. Follow the console data-transfer instructions, then use the game’s own import steps if it requires a separate PS4-to-PS5 save conversion.
Quick check before switching
- Identify whether both copies are the same PS5 version or whether you are moving from the PS4 version to the PS5 version.
- On the console, use the account that played the disc copy and open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings to check for the save.
- Install or download the matching game version. If the save does not appear, check the publisher’s instructions for edition, region, or cross-generation import requirements.
- If you are using a PS4 disc upgrade rather than buying a separate PS5 digital copy, confirm the upgrade eligibility and keep the disc available for launching the game.
