Uninstalling an Xbox game removes its installed files; it does not, by itself, delete a save that has synchronized to the Xbox network. Reinstall the game, sign in with the Xbox profile tied to that save, connect to the internet, and launch the game to let it sync. Progress that never reached the cloud—or a save deleted or overwritten everywhere—may not come back.
What uninstalling removes—and what it does not
The installed game and its save data are handled separately. Uninstalling removes the game from the console. It is not the same as choosing an option to delete the save. Xbox Wire stated in an August 19, 2026 announcement about an Xbox Insider local-save management feature that saves backed up to the Xbox network “will automatically sync the next time you launch a game.” That describes the expected behavior for a save that has successfully synchronized; it is not a promise that every game or unsynced save can be recovered. How to get a synced save back after reinstalling
- Reinstall the game from your Xbox library.
- Sign in to the Xbox profile associated with the save.
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Launch the game and allow any save synchronization to finish before continuing.
For a typical Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S game that supports Xbox cloud saves, this should restore the latest save that reached the network. If the game presents a save conflict, read the displayed timestamps and choices carefully; selecting the wrong copy may replace newer progress.
Why recent progress might be missing
Progress made offline, or while synchronization was interrupted, may exist only in the console’s local save storage. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes a sync process that compares local and cloud save timestamps. Depending on which copy is newer, the process may upload local data, download cloud data, take no action, or resolve a conflict. Data created or changed during gameplay remains local until a cloud sync occurs, so uninstalling or losing local data before a successful sync can leave the cloud copy behind. That documentation describes platform behavior for supported save systems, not a guarantee that every title syncs at the same time or uses identical conflict handling. The practical safeguard is to let a game finish syncing while online before uninstalling, especially after a long offline session.
Do not confuse uninstalling with deleting save data
Some Xbox save-management menus distinguish removing a local copy from deleting save data everywhere. Menu wording and availability can differ by system version, and Xbox has described its newer local-save management feature as an Insider rollout. If your goal is only to remove a game to free installed storage, avoid any command labeled “Delete save data everywhere.” Microsoft’s policy documentation treats that as a separate save-deletion scenario. When recovery is not assured
A cloud save is a copy to sync, not an undo history. If a save was overwritten, deleted everywhere, or a corrupted save was uploaded, the cloud may no longer contain a usable earlier version. Capcom’s support guidance for Monster Hunter: World on Xbox One says manually overwritten or deleted data, and corrupted data uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered in that game’s context. That is a title-specific warning rather than a universal recovery rule, but it shows why a successful sync alone cannot guarantee restoration of an older state. Capcom support: Xbox One save data

Microsoft’s XR-052 policy discusses save downloads between consoles of the same Xbox platform or generation. It also says cross-platform save roaming between Windows and Xbox is not required for games that are not Xbox Play Anywhere (XPA) titles. Whether progress transfers to a different generation, a Windows version, or another platform therefore depends on the title’s implementation; do not assume a console save will appear everywhere you own the game.
