Usually, your save is not deleted when a PlayStation Plus Premium game trial expires. What happens next depends on how you played. A downloaded trial keeps its save on your PS5 or PS4 console. A streamed trial keeps its save in PlayStation’s game-streaming storage. In both cases, the trial licence ends, so the game stops being playable through that trial entitlement. If you purchase the game later on the same PSN account, Sony says the trial save and trophies carry forward. If you do not buy it, your trophies remain on your PSN profile, but there is no longer an active trial licence to launch the game.
What changes when the trial licence expires?
The expiry affects your right to play, not necessarily the save file itself. A save can remain stored even while the game is inaccessible because the time-limited licence has ended. Sony’s published PlayStation Plus information does not provide a universal number of days for retaining an individual trial save after expiry, especially when the title is not purchased or the subscription is not renewed.

Think of the situation as two separate questions:
- Is the progress file still stored? That depends on whether you downloaded or streamed the game and whether you deleted or transferred the save.
- Can you open the game and use that file? You need a valid game licence, such as a purchase, rather than the expired trial entitlement.

Downloaded trials: the save stays on your console
When you download a PlayStation Plus game trial, saved data is written to the storage of the PS5 or PS4 running the game. The save is therefore tied to that console’s local saved-data system rather than to the streaming service.

What to do before expiry
- Leave the game’s saved data on the console. Do not delete the save while removing the trial application or managing storage.
- Keep enough free console storage for the save and any future game installation.
- If you expect to move to another console, manually copy the save to PlayStation Plus online storage using the console’s saved-data management controls.
- After purchasing the game, install or launch the purchased version while signed in to the same PSN account that created the trial save.
The trial application and the save are separate items in the console’s storage management. Removing the game software does not by itself establish that the save has been removed; deleting saved data is the action that puts the local progress at risk. Check the saved-data screen before confirming any deletion.
Using a different console
A local save on one PS5 or PS4 is not automatically present on another console. Upload it to Plus online storage first, then download it on the destination console. This is also the practical route when you played the trial on PS4 but intend to continue on a PS5, subject to the game’s own save compatibility.
Streamed trials: a different storage path
Streaming does not install the playable game files on your console in the same way as a download. PlayStation says saved data for a streamed game is stored in its game-streaming storage. That makes the streamed save distinct from a local save created by a downloaded copy.

Why this distinction matters
Opening a downloaded version and expecting it to find a streamed save can fail because the two versions use different storage paths. The streamed session can still have progress associated with your account while the downloaded installation has no local file to read. PlayStation’s documented solution is a manual copy to Plus online storage and then a download to the destination device.
Protecting a streamed save
- While the trial is still available, open the console’s saved-data or game-save management controls.
- Select the streamed game’s saved data and choose the option to copy or upload it to Plus online storage.
- Wait for the upload to finish before the trial window closes; verify that the save appears in online storage if your console provides a status or list.
- When you have the purchased downloadable version, use the corresponding saved-data controls to download the copy from Plus online storage to the console.
PlayStation describes this as a manual transfer. Do not assume that starting the purchased download will automatically pull a streamed save onto the console.
If you buy the game after the trial
Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ gives a direct answer: Yes. Any trophies and game save data from the trial period will carry-forward if you purchase the game.
The statement covers the progress made during the time-limited trial, provided you access the purchased game under the account that earned it.

Recommended purchase sequence
- Purchase the title through the PSN account used for the trial.
- Install the game, or launch it if the full game is already installed and the licence has been updated.
- Start the game on the same console where a downloaded save exists, or download the transferred save first if the trial was streamed or played on another console.
- At the game’s load screen, look for the existing save rather than selecting “New Game.”
Some games display separate save slots, editions, or region-specific versions. If the purchased edition does not see the file, confirm that the account, console generation, region and game edition match before creating a new save that could make the old one harder to identify.

Once the time-limited entitlement ends, you cannot continue playing through that trial. The presence of a save file does not grant a licence to launch the game. You can leave a downloaded save on the console or retain a transferred copy in Plus online storage, but neither storage location substitutes for owning the game or having another valid entitlement.
Your trophies are not removed
Sony states: Trophies earned during your time-limited game trial through the PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe plan will remain on your PSN profile, even after you complete the trial and decide not to purchase the title.
Trophy records are therefore separate from the game’s save-access question. They remain associated with the PSN profile even when the trial has ended and the game is no longer playable through Plus.

What Sony has not promised
PlayStation’s current support and FAQ material does not specify a universal retention deadline for an individual trial save after expiry. It does not establish that every save will remain available for six months, one year, or any other fixed period when the game is not purchased or Plus is not renewed. Treat precise deletion timetables from unofficial sources as unverified unless Sony publishes a title-specific or service-wide policy.

The reliable transfer chain is source storage → Plus online storage → destination storage. A streamed save must first be copied out of game-streaming storage; a local save must be uploaded from the console before it can be restored elsewhere.

PlayStation does not describe this movement as automatic. Plan the upload while the source save is still accessible, and complete the download before troubleshooting the game itself.

Pre-expiry checklist
- Identify the play method: downloaded saves are local; streamed saves are held in game-streaming storage.
- Protect a downloaded save: avoid deleting it in the console’s saved-data menu.
- Protect a streamed save: copy it to Plus online storage before the trial ends.
- Use one account: buy and launch the game with the PSN account that earned the progress.
- Plan the destination: decide whether you will continue on the same console, another console, or a downloaded copy after streaming.
- Verify transfers: wait for upload and download operations to complete instead of relying on a queued or interrupted status.
Troubleshooting a missing save
The purchased game starts at the beginning
First check the console’s saved-data list. If the trial was downloaded, confirm that the local file still exists. If the trial was streamed, look in Plus online storage for the manually uploaded copy and download it to the console. Then confirm that the purchased game is running under the same PSN account and that you installed the matching platform and edition.
The save is on another console
Local storage does not follow your account automatically. Upload the file from the original console to Plus online storage, sign in on the destination console, and download it there. If the original console is unavailable and no online copy was made, recovery options depend on whatever other backup you created; Sony’s documented transfer method requires a copy in online storage.
The game is still locked after the purchase
A save file cannot unlock an expired trial. Confirm that the purchase completed on the same PSN account, refresh or restore licences using the console’s account and licence controls, and ensure the game has finished installing its full content. These checks address licence access; they do not alter the location of the save.

Verify that the upload finished and that you are viewing the correct account’s Plus online storage. A streamed save that was never copied out of game-streaming storage will not appear as a normal local save. If the trial has already ended, Sony does not publish a universal retention period that guarantees the streaming copy will remain available indefinitely.
Save retention versus save accessibility
These terms describe different outcomes. Retention means the data still exists in console storage, game-streaming storage, or Plus online storage. Accessibility means the game can open that data under a currently valid licence and compatible version. Expiry immediately changes accessibility by ending the trial entitlement. It does not, in Sony’s published explanation, create a universal rule that instantly deletes every save.
For the safest outcome, preserve the file before expiry, purchase through the same account if you intend to continue, and use the documented online-storage transfer when changing from streaming to a download. Because Sony gives no single retention deadline for an unpurchased trial, do not treat an unbacked-up streamed save as permanently available.
