The retirement announcement determines the final playable date and whether the mode can still contribute to that season’s rewards. Riot’s documented Twisted Treeline example changed queue availability and special rewards; it did not say that owned skins or champions would be deleted from accounts.
Rank records and rewards need separate answers. A mode can remain eligible for end-of-season rewards until its shutdown while receiving no mode-specific cosmetic, and Riot can add participation rewards after the queue disappears. Treat each retirement notice as its own rulebook rather than assuming every retired mode keeps, converts, or removes the same things.

What “retired” means in League of Legends
The queue is the first thing that changes
Retirement normally refers to removing a mode from the available game queues at a stated point in the season. Riot’s announcement about Twisted Treeline said, “So at the end of this season, we will be retiring Twisted Treeline.” That wording establishes a sunset for the mode’s availability, not an automatic purge of everything connected with a player’s account.
The practical deadline is the one in the relevant Riot announcement. Until that deadline, the mode may still be playable and may still count for rewards that the notice specifically preserves. After the deadline, the ordinary queue should be treated as unavailable unless Riot later announces a return or a special event.

Mode rules and account ownership are different
A champion or skin that you already own is account content. A rank, a season reward, or a cosmetic that can be earned only by playing a particular mode is tied to that mode’s rules and the applicable season. Riot’s Twisted Treeline notice documented the latter categories, but it did not announce deletion of owned champions or skins. That is the safest conclusion supported by the notice; it is not a universal promise covering every future retirement.
Skins and champions: what the documented evidence supports
Owned champions and skins are not described as being removed
The Twisted Treeline retirement announcement discussed queue access and rewards. It did not say Riot would take away champions or skins already present in a player’s collection. You therefore should not read “retired” as meaning that your account inventory is automatically wiped.
At the same time, an announcement’s silence is not a blanket guarantee for all future modes. If a later notice contains a specific rule for a mode-exclusive item, that rule controls. Keep two questions separate: whether an item is already owned, and whether a player can still earn it before the mode closes.

Mode-exclusive cosmetics can have different treatment
Twisted Treeline demonstrates why ownership and earnability must not be conflated. Riot said players could continue working toward that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode, including the Victorious skin for players who qualified. Riot also stated, “There won’t be a TT specific chroma this year.” The absence of that chroma was a reward decision for the retirement season; it did not describe the removal of other cosmetics from accounts.
If you already own a cosmetic, the notice does not establish that retirement revokes it. If you have not earned a mode-specific reward, however, you need to check whether the notice leaves a qualifying path open, ends the reward, or substitutes a different reward.
Rank: why there is no universal carry-over rule
Read the mode’s season rules, not a general assumption
A rank associated with a retiring mode follows that mode’s own season rules. In the Twisted Treeline example, Riot preserved the ability to earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode before shutdown. That tells players the queue still mattered for reward qualification during the remaining season.

The same announcement did not establish whether a Twisted Treeline rank would remain displayed in a profile, be kept only as historical information, be archived, or be converted into another queue’s rank. It also did not establish a universal display or conversion policy for every retired mode. Do not promise that a rank will transfer to Summoner’s Rift, another ranked queue, or a future version of the mode unless Riot says so explicitly.

How to interpret rank language
Look for separate statements about the final date, ranked play, season-end qualification, and post-retirement records. “You can still earn this season’s rewards” answers a reward question; it does not answer what the rank panel will show later. Likewise, a statement that a queue is closing does not, by itself, explain whether historical rank data remains visible.
Rewards: the Twisted Treeline retirement case
Riot’s announcement gives a useful example of how several reward decisions can coexist during one sunset. The mode remained relevant to a season reward, one mode-specific cosmetic was withheld, and a separate group of post-retirement rewards was planned for dedicated players.

End-of-season rewards can survive until the final date
The important detail for players chasing a seasonal reward is that the queue did not become irrelevant immediately when retirement was announced. Riot said Twisted Treeline could still be used to earn that season’s end-of-season rewards, including the Victorious skin for qualifying players. The opportunity was tied to the remaining season and the mode’s final availability, so the announcement should be read as a time-limited qualification window rather than a permanent reward guarantee.
A missing chroma is an intentional outcome, not an account loss
Riot explicitly ruled out a Twisted Treeline-specific chroma for that retirement year. That means players should not assume that every customary mode reward will be produced during a shutdown season. A missing, replaced, or altered reward is different from deleting something a player already owns.

Participation rewards can be granted after closure
Riot also said it would provide a few small rewards to the most dedicated Twisted Treeline players after the mode was retired. The stated eligibility measure was games played before the announcement, not games played after the queue had closed. Riot had not yet supplied the detailed thresholds in that announcement, so the announcement itself is the authority for the existence and timing of the plan, while later Riot communication would be needed for the exact requirements and items.

This structure matters for any future retirement: a mode can stop accepting games while a separate reward process continues. “The queue is gone” does not necessarily mean “all rewards are finished,” and “post-retirement reward” does not necessarily mean every player receives one.

Retired does not prove that a mode can never appear again. Riot said it would look for opportunities to bring back older modes with long-term potential and named One-for-All as an example. That language leaves open the possibility of a future return, but it is not a schedule or a promise that a particular mode will come back.
A return would also be a new rules event. Do not assume that a returning mode will restore its old rank, repeat its old reward track, or use the same queue and season rules. Wait for the announcement covering that specific return.
How to read a future retirement notice
Use these checks in order whenever Riot announces that another mode is ending.
- Find the final date and queue status. Identify the season boundary or calendar date Riot gives for the last playable games. Note whether the notice describes ordinary queue access, a limited final rotation, or another defined endpoint. This is the deadline for any activity that requires the mode to be available.
- Separate rank from rewards. Search for a direct statement about the mode’s rank, then separately find the section on season-end rewards. If the notice discusses only one of those, it has not answered the other. In particular, reward eligibility does not establish how a rank will be displayed later.
- Check what remains earnable before closure. List each reward named in the notice and the condition attached to it. A season reward may remain available while a mode-exclusive chroma or title is discontinued. Treat each item independently rather than assuming an all-or-nothing reward decision.
- Look for after-retirement rewards. Riot may promise commemorative or participation-based items after the queue disappears. Record whether eligibility depends on games played, wins, a rank threshold, or another measure, and whether the qualifying activity must occur before the announcement, before the final date, or during a specified season.
- Mark the eligibility cutoff. A cutoff tied to the announcement can arrive earlier than the shutdown date. Twisted Treeline’s planned participation rewards used games played before the announcement, illustrating why waiting until the final day can be too late for a special reward.
- Distinguish owned content from unearned content. Inventory already on the account and rewards still being pursued are different questions. Look for any explicit statement about existing cosmetics or champions, and do not turn an unstated point into a guarantee.
- Watch for a return clause. If Riot says it may bring back older modes with long-term potential, “retired” describes the current rotation rather than proving permanent deletion. A possible return still does not preserve old qualification rules unless Riot says it will.
A practical player checklist before shutdown
- Read the complete Riot notice. Keep the final date, season, reward names, and eligibility cutoff together; the headline alone may not contain the conditions.
- Play qualifying games before the stated cutoff. If a notice uses participation as its measure, complete the required activity before the cutoff it specifies, not merely before the queue disappears.
- Check the reward you actually want. Confirm whether it is a season-end reward, a mode-specific cosmetic, or a post-retirement item. Each category can have a different condition.
- Do not count on a missing cosmetic. If Riot says a mode-specific chroma will not be issued, playing more games cannot create an eligibility path that the notice has removed.
- Keep your own records. Saving the announcement and noting your games or rank can help you verify whether a later reward grant matches the published criteria. It cannot change the criteria or guarantee a reward that was never promised.
- Check later updates for grant details. When Riot says details will follow, the later notice is where thresholds, item names, and delivery timing should be confirmed.
The reliable rule is narrow but useful: retirement removes or pauses a mode’s access first; everything else must be read from that mode’s own announcement and season rules. Twisted Treeline shows that owned account content was not announced for deletion, season rewards could remain earnable, a mode-specific chroma could be withheld, and dedicated players could receive separate rewards after closure. Those are documented outcomes for that case, not a universal template that overrides the next retirement notice.
