Losing access to Steam does not instantly erase installed games or every save—but your game licenses are tied to your Steam account, and save recovery depends on how each game stores progress. Start by trying to recover the account through Steam Support. Then check whether the game’s latest save synced to Steam Cloud or remains on a computer you can still access.
What you may lose—and what may remain

Steam’s Steam Backup feature is for compatible game files, not a substitute for account recovery or a guarantee that progress is included.

How to recover a Steam account
- Go to Steam’s official account recovery page and follow the recovery flow. Try the account’s possible login names and previous email addresses.
- If self-recovery does not work, use the Support intake form offered during the process. Steam says you can contact Support even if you have forgotten the email address, password, and phone number. Provide as much information that can help establish ownership as possible.
Reinstalling Steam or restoring an installation backup will not recover credentials or move licenses to another account. Treat account access as the first problem to solve.
If you think someone stole the account
Secure the email account and the computer before changing the Steam password; otherwise, an attacker may be able to regain access. Follow Steam’s stolen or hijacked account guidance and account security recommendations.

- Review authorized devices and use “Sign out everywhere” if you see an unfamiliar device.
- Change the Steam password after securing the email account, and review the security of the associated accounts.
- Scan the computer for malware.
- Use Steam’s official Help site. Do not enter credentials on suspicious sites or trust people in chat who claim to be Steam Support.
Will you lose your Steam saves if you cannot log in?
Check whether the game uses Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud is optional and game-specific: developers decide whether and how a game syncs files. Check the game’s Steam Store page for its Cloud indicator. That indicates support, but does not by itself establish that a particular save synced successfully; consult the developer’s instructions if you need to know which data is covered. If you still have the original computer
It may contain a newer local save that never reached the cloud. Connect that computer and give Steam a chance to sync before switching devices or choosing between conflicting versions. Local copies of Cloud files are kept in the Steam userdata directory by default:

Files are organized by Steam account ID and game app ID. These locations can help you find data on a computer you control; they cannot restore a save that was never stored there, synced, or backed up.
If Steam shows a cloud conflict
A conflict means the local and cloud versions differ. Compare the timestamps in Steam’s conflict window and choose the version that matches your latest intended progress. Do not choose blindly: offline play can delay syncing, so the newest version may be on either side. Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts; its Steam Cloud FAQ explains how the system works.

If the old computer is gone
A save that was local-only and never synced or copied elsewhere cannot be recovered through Steam. Steam Support specifically says saves on an inaccessible previous machine cannot be recovered when they were not in Steam Cloud.
What Steam backups include—and what they do not
Steam’s Backup feature covers compatible game files, but games that use third-party installers or downloaders may not work with it. Steam recommends testing a backup after creating it. For Valve-created games, the feature excludes saved games, custom multiplayer maps, and configuration files; those need separate copies. Save locations for other games vary, so check the game’s documentation, community, or developer instructions.

You can also copy compatible game files and local saves to an external drive, but do so separately and verify that the save data is actually included. A drive cannot restore account access, licenses, cloud data that was never downloaded, or progress that was never copied. Steam Guard adds another authentication layer for sign-ins from unrecognized devices. Steam describes it as making it harder for an account to fall into the wrong hands in its Steam Guard FAQ. If you set up the mobile authenticator, attach a confirmed phone number and store the recovery code somewhere safe. - Keep your Steam and email account recovery details current and secure.
- For games where progress matters, confirm Steam Cloud support and synchronization rather than assuming saves are covered.
- Make separate copies of local saves and custom content; a game-file backup may omit them.
- Keep the mobile authenticator recovery code somewhere accessible if your phone is lost.
