Turning off recurring billing does not usually end your Xbox Game Pass access right away: you can keep playing until the subscription’s displayed expiry date. After that, catalog games are no longer available through Game Pass, but a Microsoft Community volunteer moderator says your saves are not deleted by cancellation. Access to a game and retention of its save are separate issues.
When does Game Pass access end after you cancel?
Cancellation and expiry are different moments. Microsoft says that if recurring billing is off, the subscription remains usable until the expiry date shown on your account. If your account displays “Turn on recurring billing” rather than a Manage link, Microsoft says the subscription is already set to expire on that date and will not automatically charge again. Xbox says access to catalog games lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the catalog. Xbox’s Game Pass page also advises canceling through your Microsoft account or Xbox console before the next billing date to stop being charged.
What happens to downloaded Game Pass games?
Downloading a catalog game does not make it a permanent purchase. The Xbox page ties access to the subscription and the game’s continued presence in the catalog. Once your subscription expires—or the game leaves the catalog—you can no longer play it through that Game Pass entitlement unless you have another valid way to access it, such as buying the game.

The cited Xbox information establishes that catalog access ends; it does not say that cancellation automatically uninstalls the game files. So do not assume the files will be deleted, but also do not treat an installed copy as a license to keep playing.
Are your saves deleted when you cancel?
A Microsoft Community volunteer moderator answered on June 8, 2022, that canceling Game Pass does not affect saved games and that you can continue where you left off if you renew or buy the game. Keep the distinction clear: a save may remain available even when the Game Pass entitlement no longer lets you launch the game. If you regain access to the same game by renewing or purchasing it, the Community guidance says you can resume your progress.

What to check before your subscription expires
- Confirm the expiry date: Check your Microsoft account’s subscription status so you know how long the paid access remains active.
- Check the game’s access route: If you want to keep playing after expiry, verify whether you own it separately or plan to renew while it is still available in the catalog.
- Do not confuse installation with ownership: A downloaded file alone does not establish ongoing access under Game Pass.
- Plan around the save: The Community moderator’s guidance is that saves are not affected by cancellation and progress can continue after renewal or purchase, but it is not a universal technical specification for every title and platform.
