What the player is still owed depends on the contract’s guarantees and terms, and a G League opportunity is possible but not automatic.
What does “waived” mean?
Waived means the team has requested waivers on the player’s contract. Under the NBA-NBPA’s 2023 Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams have 48 hours to file a claim. The waiving team remains financially responsible under the CBA during that period. Neither a waiver request nor a claim can be withdrawn.
If more than one team claims the player, the CBA’s priority rules determine which team gets the contract, using standings and tie-breakers. A claim transfers the contract rights and obligations to the claiming team; it does not make the player a free agent.
What happens when the player clears waivers?
A player clears waivers when no team claims the contract before the 48-hour period expires. The contract then terminates, and the player can pursue another opportunity, subject to any remaining contract obligations and applicable rules. Clearing waivers is the point at which the player is no longer waiting on another NBA team’s claim—not a guarantee of a new NBA or G League deal.

Does a waived player still get paid?
Possibly. Waiving a player does not by itself establish that the player forfeits all remaining compensation or receives all of it. The executed contract’s guarantees and other protections, the timing and reason for termination, and any later professional compensation can affect the outcome. The CBA also provides a set-off framework for certain remaining salary obligations when a player earns compensation from another professional team. Without the contract and transaction details, there is no reliable universal amount to quote.
Exhibit 9: a specific camp-contract provision
Exhibit 9 is a particular training-camp contract form, not a rule that applies to every player waived in camp. Its terms generally eliminate compensation when the team terminates the contract before the first day of the regular season, apart from specified compensation. If the player is injured directly as a result of playing for that team and would otherwise qualify for compensation, the form specifies a $15,000 payment upon termination. The precise contract language and circumstances matter.

Exhibit 10: a conditional G League bonus route
An Exhibit 10 attachment can provide a bonus if the player meets its conditions. In general, the player must be waived before the regular season, sign with the G League by the affiliate-designation deadline, initially be assigned to the named affiliate, report there, and provide 60 consecutive days of service. The agreement provides exceptions, including for certain injury circumstances; the executed contract sets the bonus amount.
The CBA allows an Exhibit 10 bonus from $5,000 up to an applicable maximum. The maximum was $75,000 in the 2023-24 salary-cap year and scales with the salary cap in later cap years. That figure is a cap, not a payment every waived player receives. An Exhibit 10 contract also gives the team an option to convert it to a Two-Way contract before the first day of the regular season, subject to applicable rules.

Can the player go to the G League?
Yes, but not automatically. A waived player may sign a G League contract. An NBA team may designate up to four waived players as affiliate players; if a designated player signs in the G League, the player is allocated to that team’s affiliate. The designation does not bind the player to an NBA assignment, and the player remains an NBA free agent available to all 30 teams. Players without an affiliate designation may have other G League routes, depending on league rules and their history.
For 2025-26, the G League’s roster guide lists a maximum of 15 standard-contract players and three Two-Way players per NBA team. Those are season-specific NBA roster limits, not a promise that a camp player will receive a spot.

How the possible outcomes differ
