What happens when you delete, disenchant, or vendor gear in World of Warcraft?

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accidentally removed gear in World of Warcraft is sometimes recoverable, but the correct rescue method depends on how and when it disappeared. A sale made during your current login session should be recovered from a vendor’s Buyback tab. Earlier eligible sales, deleted items, and some disenchanted items go through Blizzard’s Item Restoration service. A disenchanted item can be restored only if the character still has the materials produced by disenchanting it. Blizzard applies a five-item-per-character limit every 24 hours, excludes many item categories, and permanently loses items after their restoration record is purged.

Choose the recovery route first

The three actions are not handled identically. Use this decision table before trying to contact support or repeating an action that could make recovery harder.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What happened First place to look What must be available Where the recovered item goes
Sold during the current login session Vendor Buyback tab The item must still be in the vendor’s recent Buyback list It returns through the vendor transaction
Sold earlier, deleted, or destroyed Blizzard’s Item Restoration page The item must still qualify and remain in Blizzard’s restoration records The character’s in-game mailbox
Disenchanted Item Restoration page The character must still possess the enchanting materials gained from that item The character’s in-game mailbox; Blizzard removes the materials

Think of the routes as two different clocks. Buyback is tied to the current login session and the vendor’s short recent-sales list. Item Restoration is tied to the character, account eligibility, item category, and the age of Blizzard’s record. A recent vendor mistake therefore deserves an immediate in-game check, while an older deletion or disenchant belongs on the web service.

If you just sold the gear, use Buyback before logging out

A vendor sale made in the current play session is the easiest case. Return to any vendor who offers the ordinary buy-and-sell interface, open the vendor window, and select the Buyback tab. Blizzard says that tab contains the last 12 items sold since login. Select the gear and complete the repurchase while it is listed.

  1. Go to a vendor with a normal buy-and-sell window.
  2. Open the Buyback tab.
  3. Find the gear among the 12 most recent items sold since you logged in.
  4. Repurchase it before ending the session.

Blizzard’s restoration rules specifically direct players to Buyback for items destroyed or sold in the current session rather than the web restoration page. Do not assume that an item still appears after you log out; check the tab immediately when you notice the mistake. The list is limited to the 12 most recent sales, so selling many more things can push an error out of view. If the item is not there, use the restoration eligibility checks below instead of repeatedly selling or destroying other items.

Buyback is not the same as a support ticket. It is an in-game transaction, and the recovered gear does not arrive through mail. Once you have logged out or otherwise lost the current-session listing, the web restoration page is the next place to check if the item is eligible.

Deleted or destroyed items: submit a restoration request

For an item removed in an earlier session, open Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration service. The service lets you choose a character, inspect the items Blizzard still lists as restorable, and select one for delivery.

  1. Sign in to the Blizzard account that owns the character.
  2. Open the Item Restoration page and choose the relevant World of Warcraft character.
  3. Review the available item list. The list is the practical test of whether Blizzard still has an eligible record.
  4. Select the item and confirm the restoration.
  5. Open that character’s in-game mailbox and retrieve the restored gear.

If the character that held the gear was deleted, Blizzard instructs you to undelete the character first. Character recovery and item recovery are separate steps: restore the character, then return to Item Restoration for the gear. Selecting the wrong character can make a valid item appear to be missing, because the service is organized around the original character.

An absent item does not create a customer-service exception. Blizzard states that items it cannot restore are permanently lost and that “Customer Support will not restore World of Warcraft items.” The restoration list can therefore be shorter than your actual deletion history. The service is self-service: it shows what Blizzard currently allows you to recover rather than creating a request for an employee to search indefinitely.

Disenchanting is reversible only while the materials remain

Disenchanting converts an item into enchanting materials. Blizzard’s restoration service can reverse an eligible disenchant, but it takes back the materials produced by that conversion. Before submitting the request, make sure the same character still has those materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the character’s bags, bank, and other storage for every material received from the disenchant.
  2. Do not spend, sell, mail, or otherwise remove those materials while deciding whether to restore the item.
  3. Open Item Restoration, select the character, and look for the disenchanted gear.
  4. Confirm the restoration. Blizzard removes the materials and sends the original item to the character’s mailbox.

If the materials are missing or the item is not listed, the service cannot complete this exchange. The rule is tied to the materials on the character, not merely to proof that the disenchant occurred. This means using the materials for another enchant, trading them, or selling them can eliminate the practical route back to the original equipment. Keep the exact materials untouched until the restoration is complete or you decide to abandon it.

Current limits and account requirements

Blizzard’s current support article says a character may restore up to five items once every 24 hours. The limit is per character, not a single five-item allowance shared by the whole account. The same article says the service is unavailable when the account has no game time or active subscription, or when the account is suspended or banned.

  • Plan restorations around the five-item, 24-hour character limit.
  • Confirm that the account has active game time or a subscription.
  • Resolve a suspension or ban before expecting the service to function.
  • Use the character that originally owned the item; moving characters does not bypass the eligibility rules.

Restoring five items at once can use the entire allowance even if you later discover another mistake, so review the list carefully before confirming. These are operational limits in Blizzard’s support documentation and can change. If the page displays a different limit when you attempt a restoration, follow the current account-specific message.

Items the restoration service does not cover

Many missing objects never appear in the restoration list. Blizzard identifies the following exclusions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Items destroyed in the current play session: use Buyback first when that route is available.
  • Stackable crafting materials and quest items.
  • Consumables: including reagents, potions, and food.
  • Collections already credited to the account: pets, mounts, and heirlooms that have already been added to Collections.
  • Temporary items: such as holiday-event items.
  • Items traded or mailed to another character.
  • Items sold on the Auction House.
  • Items destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change.

The exclusion for collections matters because the original object may no longer be treated as an inventory item after its appearance or unlock has been added to Collections. Likewise, sending an item to another character or listing it on the Auction House moves it outside this self-service recovery path. Stackable materials, quest objects, food, potions, and reagents are especially easy to overlook because they may look like ordinary inventory losses, but Blizzard places them outside this service.

Restoration records expire and can be purged

Eligibility is time-sensitive. Blizzard says retention depends on an item’s quality and item level. Its examples are that a Common (white) item may be recoverable for only one day, while an Epic item may be recoverable for 30 days. These are examples rather than guaranteed deadlines for every item, so do not treat 30 days as a universal promise. A lower-quality item can disappear from the list much sooner than a high-quality one.

When Blizzard purges an item from its database, the item cannot be restored by any means. Its Quest Reward Restoration guidance makes the same point about non-permanent listings and purged records. Waiting can therefore turn an item that is currently listed into one that is permanently unavailable. The safest response to a valuable mistake is to check the service promptly, not to wait for a future patch or a support reply.

What to do when the item is missing from the list

Work through the checks in this order:

  1. Identify the removal method. A current-session sale or destruction belongs at the vendor’s Buyback tab, not the restoration page.
  2. Check the exclusion list. Consumables, stackable materials, quest items, collection unlocks, temporary items, auctioned items, traded or mailed items, and pre-transfer or pre-faction-change destruction are not eligible.
  3. Verify the character. Select the character that held the gear. If that character was deleted, undelete it first.
  4. For a disenchant, verify the materials. The character must still have the materials produced by the disenchant so Blizzard can reclaim them.
  5. Consider record age. Lower-quality or lower-level items can have shorter retention, and any item already purged is permanently unavailable.
  6. Check account status. An inactive account, suspension, or ban prevents use of the service.

If all of these checks pass but the gear remains absent, Blizzard’s published position is that Customer Support cannot restore a purged or otherwise ineligible item. Submitting repeated tickets will not override that rule. Also check that you are looking at the correct game account and character, and that you have not already used the day’s restoration allowance.

Do not use the old 2012 cooldown as the current rule

Blizzard Entertainment’s May 1, 2012 announcement described a 30-day service cooldown. That announcement is historical. The current Blizzard Support rules instead state that a character may restore up to five items once every 24 hours. For present-day decisions, rely on the current World of Warcraft Item Restoration rules, not the older announcement.

The 2012 notice remains useful only as context for why older guides may quote a different cooldown. It should not be used to calculate your current allowance. Limits, exclusions, and regional handling can change, so the account-specific page is the final check when the interface differs from an older guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical prevention checklist

  • Pause after a mistaken sale or destruction and check Buyback before logging out.
  • Keep enchanting materials untouched if you may want to reverse a disenchant.
  • Open Item Restoration promptly for older losses because records are not permanent.
  • Save the character name and approximate time of removal; this helps you choose the correct character and distinguish a recent session from an older loss.
  • Do not transfer, mail, auction, or spend related materials while a restoration decision is pending.
  • Read the account-specific support message before using one of the five daily restoration slots.
  • After restoring an item, check the character’s mailbox rather than expecting it to reappear directly in the bags.

The safest expectation is conditional recovery, not a guaranteed undo button: Buyback handles the freshest vendor mistakes, Item Restoration handles only eligible records, disenchant reversals consume the resulting materials, and purged or excluded items are lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get back gear I sold after logging out?

Possibly. Check Blizzard’s Item Restoration page for the character that owned it. Current-session sales belong in the vendor’s Buyback tab, which lists the last 12 items sold since login; older eligible sales may appear in the web service instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to the enchanting materials when I restore a disenchanted item?

Blizzard reclaims the materials created by the disenchant. The character must still possess those materials, and the restored item is sent to that character’s in-game mailbox.

How many items can I restore?

Blizzard’s current support rules allow up to five items once every 24 hours on each character. The service also requires game time or an active subscription and is unavailable to suspended or banned accounts.

Why is my deleted item missing from Item Restoration?

It may be excluded, tied to the wrong character, too old and purged, or removed in the current session when Buyback is the required route. Consumables, stackable materials, quest items, temporary items, collection unlocks, auctioned or traded items, and items destroyed before a transfer or faction change are not covered.

Can Customer Support restore an item that the list does not show?

Blizzard says Customer Support will not restore World of Warcraft items that the service cannot restore. A record that has been purged is permanently unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the old 30-day cooldown still the rule?

No. Blizzard’s May 1, 2012 announcement described a 30-day cooldown, but the current support article says the allowance is up to five items every 24 hours per character.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Check vendor Buyback immediately for a current-session mistake. For older sales, deletions, and eligible disenchants, use Blizzard’s Item Restoration page; disenchants require the original materials, restored gear arrives by mailbox, and the service is limited to five items per character every 24 hours. Exclusions and purged records cannot be bypassed.
