1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn Act I, sacrificing a creature to pay a Blood cost normally kills it and removes it from your side of the board. Its sacrifice supplies Blood for the card you are playing and usually gives you 1 Bone. A creature with Worthy Sacrifice supplies 3 Blood instead of 1, while Many Lives lets the creature survive after providing its Blood. Sacrifice also appears at the Bone Altar and Campfire, where it has entirely different consequences.
The normal Blood-sacrifice action in Act I
The familiar sacrifice mechanic belongs primarily to Act I, during Leshy’s card battles. When you play a card with a Blood cost of one or more, Inscryption asks you to select eligible creatures already on your side of the board. Those creatures are the payment, not cards from your hand or deck.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The game checks the total Blood value of your selected creatures against the cost of the card you are trying to play. If the selected creatures do not provide enough Blood, the play cannot be completed. Once the payment is sufficient, the chosen creatures are sacrificed and the new card enters play according to the normal turn rules.

An ordinary creature selected for a Blood payment perishes. It disappears from the battlefield rather than moving to your hand, returning to your deck, or waiting in a discard pile. Its death also produces 1 Bone, because a card that perishes through sacrifice follows Inscryption’s general one-Bone-on-death rule.

For an ordinary eligible creature, the transaction is therefore two separate rewards: its sacrifice value pays Blood toward the new card, and its death adds one Bone to your Bone counter. The Blood pays the card’s cost immediately; the Bone remains available for effects that use Bones.
How the payment is chosen
- Play the Blood-cost card. Select the Leshy-style card you want to put onto the board.
- Enter sacrifice selection. The game highlights creatures on your side that can be used as payment.
- Select enough creatures. Choose a combination whose sacrifice values meet or exceed the card’s Blood requirement.
- Confirm the play. The selected creatures are removed according to their sigils, their Blood is applied to the cost, and any creature that actually perishes grants 1 Bone.
This is why a low-cost creature can still be useful after it has stopped attacking: it can become payment for a larger threat, while also converting its death into a Bone.
Blood values: ordinary sacrifices and Worthy Sacrifice
Most eligible creatures contribute 1 Blood when sacrificed. The Worthy Sacrifice sigil changes that value to 3 Blood. It does not mean the creature pays three separate times or grants three Bones. It changes only the amount of Blood supplied by that creature for the payment.
| Creature condition | Blood supplied | Does it perish? | Bone gained from that creature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal eligible creature | 1 Blood | Yes | 1 Bone |
| Creature with Worthy Sacrifice | 3 Blood | Normally yes | 1 Bone |
| Creature with Many Lives | Its normal sacrifice value | No | No death-triggered Bone, because it does not perish |
Worthy Sacrifice is especially important when a card has a high Blood requirement. One such creature can replace three ordinary one-Blood sacrifices, leaving more board space and more attackers in play. The sigil changes the Blood calculation, but a creature with no survival exception still dies when selected.
Does Many Lives survive?
Yes. A creature bearing Many Lives survives the act of being sacrificed. It still supplies its Blood value, so the new card can be played even though the selected creature remains on the board afterward.

Many Lives therefore separates the two parts of the normal transaction. The creature contributes Blood, but it does not perish. Since it does not die, it does not produce the one Bone associated with a card that perishes through sacrifice. The sigil is a survival exception, not a Blood multiplier.
If several creatures are selected and only one has Many Lives, treat them individually: the Many Lives creature remains, while ordinary selected creatures perish and provide their own Bones. Worthy Sacrifice and Many Lives affect different parts of the calculation, so a creature can be valuable for its Blood amount and for avoiding board loss when the relevant sigils are present.

Do sacrificed cards go back into your deck?
Not when they are used to pay a Blood cost in battle. A normal sacrifice removes the creature from the board by killing it. It does not return that card to your deck or hand as part of the payment.
The important qualification is that “sacrifice” is also used for other events. Those events can remove a card from the deck entirely or risk having it eaten. The location of the sacrifice determines what the card leaves and what you receive.
Every sacrifice context compared
| Where it happens | What leaves play | What you receive | Special rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battle board, paying a Blood cost | The selected creature leaves your board; a normal creature dies | Blood toward the card’s cost; normally 1 Bone when the creature perishes | Many Lives survives; Worthy Sacrifice supplies 3 Blood |
| Bone Altar | The selected card is permanently removed from your deck | A boon depending on what was sacrificed | Black Goat, another creature, and a Pelt produce different results |
| Campfire | A card may eventually be eaten by the survivors after repeated upgrades | Power +1 or Health +2 upgrades before the risk escalates | Ring Worm, Adder, or Long Elk can poison survivors |
What the Bone Altar does
The Bone Altar is not a second way to pay a Blood cost. It is an event that permanently removes the selected card from your deck. That removal is final for the run: the card is not merely taken off the battlefield, because the altar operates on the deck itself.

Sacrificing a Black Goat
Offering a Black Goat at the Bone Altar grants the Boon of the Bone Lord. This is a specific reward tied to that creature, rather than the ordinary one-Bone reward from a creature dying in battle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sacrificing another creature
Offering a creature other than a Black Goat grants a Minor Boon. The creature is still permanently removed from the deck, so the boon is the exchange for accepting that lasting loss.
Sacrificing a Pelt
A Pelt can be selected at the Bone Altar, but it grants nothing. The Pelt is removed, and unlike a Black Goat or another creature, it does not produce a boon.
Use the altar only after checking which copy you are giving up. A battle sacrifice trades a creature for Blood and possibly a Bone during the current encounter; the Bone Altar trades a deck card for an altar result and cannot be undone by simply drawing later.
What “sacrifice” means at a Campfire
Campfire language describes a different risk from the Blood-payment mechanic. The event initially offers one of two upgrades: Power +1 or Health +2. After the first safe opportunity, taking repeated buffs can cause the campfire survivors to eat and remove the card being upgraded.

The card is not being selected as Blood payment for a new creature. Instead, the danger comes from continuing to use the campfire after the initial safe upgrade. If the survivors eat the card, that card is removed through the event rather than dying in a battle sacrifice.
Poisoning the survivors
Ring Worm, Adder, or Long Elk can poison the survivors when they are eaten. If that happens, the poisoned survivors do not attack at later campfires during that run. This changes the risk profile of repeated campfire upgrades: the event can remove a card, but it can also disable the survivors’ later attacks.
Because the Campfire has its own upgrade and survivor rules, do not apply the Blood, Bone, or Many Lives explanation to it. The same word describes a separate event interaction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether a battle sacrifice is worthwhile
Check the card’s Blood requirement
Start with the cost of the card you want to play. Count one Blood for each normal eligible creature and three for each creature with Worthy Sacrifice. If the total is short, the game will prevent the play, so selecting fewer creatures does not create a partial payment.
Value board presence separately from Blood
A creature that is attacking or blocking may be worth more alive than its one Blood payment. Conversely, a creature that cannot contribute effectively this turn may be an efficient payment, especially when its death also gives a Bone. A Worthy Sacrifice creature can cover a large portion of a cost while preserving other creatures on the board.

Look for survival exceptions
Many Lives lets you obtain the Blood without losing that creature. When planning a costly play, distinguish creatures that will disappear from those that will remain. This prevents an incorrect assumption that every selected creature is automatically gone.
Separate immediate and lasting rewards
Blood is spent on the card you are playing. Bones are a separate resource produced by creatures that actually perish. The Bone Altar’s boon is not the same reward, and a Campfire upgrade is not a Blood or Bone transaction. Identifying the location before choosing a card prevents the most common rules mistakes.
Act I versus later acts
The Blood-sacrifice explanation is chiefly an Act I rule associated with Leshy’s cards. Inscryption changes its card-cost systems in later acts, so an Act I sacrifice guide should not be treated as a universal rule for every section of the game.
Act III primarily uses Energy rather than the Act I Blood system. As a result, the familiar “select creatures, pay Blood, gain Bones” sequence is not the default way cards are played there. Always identify the act and its cost system before applying a sacrifice rule.
Quick Recap
Common misunderstandings
- “Sacrificed” always means the card returns later. No. A normal Blood sacrifice kills an ordinary creature, while the Bone Altar permanently removes a card from the deck.
- Every sacrifice gives three Blood. No. Three Blood is the value of Worthy Sacrifice; most eligible creatures provide one.
- Many Lives gives extra Blood. No. It changes survival, not the creature’s normal Blood value.
- Every selected creature gives a Bone. Only a card that perishes gives the one Bone. A Many Lives creature survives.
- The Campfire uses the battle sacrifice rules. No. Campfire sacrifice language refers to the possibility that survivors eat a repeatedly upgraded card.
- A Pelt at the Bone Altar grants a minor reward. No. Sacrificing a Pelt there gives nothing.
