Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA practical Switch-emulation PC starts around a Ryzen 5 3600-class processor, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 6 GB-class graphics card with Vulkan 1.2 or OpenGL 4.5 support, and an SSD. Treat 8 GB of RAM and roughly 20 GB of free SSD space as setup floors, not guarantees that every game will run perfectly. For several games plus updates, downloadable content and shader caches, a 1 TB SSD is a more realistic capacity target.
The hardware baseline in one view
Ryujinx’s published guidance separates a minimum floor from a recommended native-resolution and framerate baseline. The figures below describe capability targets, not a universal performance guarantee: game engines, resolution, graphics settings, drivers and emulator compatibility still affect the result.

| Component | Minimum or requirement | Recommended baseline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GiB RAM | 16 GB DDR4 | Emulation, the operating system, the game and shader data share system memory. |
| Processor | No single universal model is specified | AMD Ryzen 5 3600 class | The emulator translates the Switch’s CPU work; processor type and memory speed influence the experience. |
| Graphics | GPU supporting OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.2, or newer | NVIDIA GTX 1060 with 6 GB VRAM | The graphics API determines whether the emulator can use the required rendering features; VRAM helps at higher resolutions and with larger caches. |
| Storage | SSD with at least 20 GB free in one setup guide | 1 TB SSD for a multi-game library | Fast storage reduces loading friction, while capacity must cover games, updates, DLC, caches and normal PC headroom. |
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 1803 or newer, macOS 12, or a modern Linux distribution | Keep the OS, graphics driver and emulator current | Unsupported versions can prevent installation or remove access to required graphics features. |
Ryujinx explicitly warns that running below 8 GiB can cause poor gameplay or unexpected crashes. Its 16 GB recommendation is therefore the sensible target for a new build, even though an 8 GB machine may start the emulator.

Emulation translates two systems at once
A Switch emulator is not simply playing a PC version of a game. It translates the console’s CPU instructions and graphics commands for your computer while also emulating system services. That translation creates overhead, so a processor that looks adequate for ordinary PC gaming may not deliver the same result in emulation.

Ryujinx names a Ryzen 5 3600 as its recommended baseline for native-resolution and framerate use. Treat “Ryzen 5 3600 class” as a practical performance reference rather than a certification: no cited requirement promises that every title will hold a particular frame rate on that CPU.
Single-thread and memory behavior affect consistency
Yuzu’s documentation notes that processor type, RAM amount and RAM speed influence the experience. In practice, compare a laptop or desktop’s actual CPU model and sustained performance, not only its advertised core count. Two processors with the same number of cores can behave differently when the emulator’s busiest work is concentrated on a smaller number of threads.
Fast system memory can help when the rest of the platform supports it, but capacity comes first. If the machine is paging to disk because it has too little RAM, a faster processor cannot remove that bottleneck.

Graphics requirements: API support is non-negotiable
Check Vulkan and OpenGL versions
Ryujinx requires a graphics processor that supports OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan 1.2, or a newer version. This is an API requirement, not a brand preference. Before buying or configuring a laptop, verify the GPU’s supported API through the manufacturer’s specifications or the operating system’s diagnostic tools.

The GTX 1060 6 GB is Ryujinx’s recommended reference point. A newer GPU can be faster, but the name alone does not guarantee compatibility; driver support and the available Vulkan or OpenGL implementation matter as well.
VRAM and resolution change the workload
The 6 GB reference is tied to Ryujinx’s native-resolution and framerate recommendation. Increasing resolution, using texture enhancements or keeping several graphics caches can increase video-memory pressure. Conversely, lowering the render resolution changes the workload but does not erase CPU emulation work. Because there is no authoritative per-game performance table, choose a GPU with the intended resolution in mind and regard the GTX 1060 figure as a baseline, not an FPS promise.
How much RAM should you install?
8 GB is a floor
Ryujinx’s documentation states that at least 8 GiB is required and warns that less can result in poor gameplay or unexpected crashes. An 8 GB computer also has to share memory with Windows, macOS or Linux and any background applications, leaving less for the emulator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems16 GB is the sensible target
Ryujinx recommends 16 GB DDR4. That gives the operating system and emulator more room for game data and shader-related work without immediately resorting to the page file. Close unnecessary applications on an 8 GB system, but consider a memory upgrade before changing the graphics card if the machine frequently runs out of available RAM.

More than 16 GB is situational
The supplied requirements do not establish a universal need for 32 GB. Extra memory is useful when emulation runs alongside recording, browser tabs, development tools or other demanding programs, but it is not a documented requirement for Switch emulation itself.
SSD capacity: separate setup space from library space
The 20 GB figure is a setup minimum
One setup guide recommends an SSD and at least 20 GB of free space. Read that as room for the emulator and a limited setup, not as enough capacity for a retained library. A drive that is nearly full can also leave too little space for operating-system updates and temporary files.
Game files vary by title
Nintendo states that storage requirements vary by game and lists the exact requirement on the physical package or in the eShop. Official examples include:
| Game | Published size | Source date | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | 10.6 GB | Nintendo, 2020 | Listed game storage requirement |
| Hogwarts Legacy | 17.1 GB; at least 15 GB download | Nintendo, 2023 | Published size and stated download requirement |
| Pokémon Scarlet | 9.9 GB | Nintendo, 2022 | Listed game storage requirement |
Those three examples alone total 37.6 GB before updates, downloadable content, emulator files or caches. They illustrate why a small system drive fills quickly even when each individual game looks manageable.

Why 1 TB is a practical target
A 1 TB SSD is an editorial capacity recommendation for someone keeping several games, updates, DLC and shader caches on the PC. It is not a Ryujinx minimum and it does not imply that every library needs exactly 1 TB. Count the titles you actually plan to retain, use each title’s official size, then add room for updates and free-space headroom. If the emulator and games share the boot drive, reserve capacity for the operating system rather than treating the advertised drive size as entirely available.
Do not confuse PC storage with Switch microSD rules
Nintendo’s microSD guidance applies to a physical Switch, not to a PC emulator. The console supports microSD cards up to 2 GB, microSDHC cards from 4–32 GB and microSDXC cards from 64 GB–2 TB, with higher transfer speed recommended. A microSD card is relevant to a lawful console-dump workflow, but it is not a requirement for storing emulator games on a PC.
Can your laptop run Switch games?
Use the laptop’s exact specifications rather than its marketing category. A laptop is a reasonable candidate when it meets the following checks:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- At least 8 GiB of installed RAM, with 16 GB preferred.
- A processor around the Ryzen 5 3600 reference class or better sustained performance.
- A graphics processor exposing Vulkan 1.2 or OpenGL 4.5 and performance in the GTX 1060 6 GB range for the recommended baseline.
- An SSD with at least 20 GB free for setup and enough additional capacity for the games you will keep.
- Windows 10 version 1803 or newer, macOS 12, or a modern Linux distribution.
Check whether the laptop can maintain performance while plugged in and whether its cooling system allows the CPU and GPU to sustain their rated speeds. Thin systems may reduce clock speeds under a long emulation session; that is a thermal and design limitation, not something the minimum specification table can guarantee away. Also account for your target resolution and framerate: native-resolution play is the reference used by Ryujinx, while higher resolutions increase graphics demand.

What you must provide before installing an emulator
Ryujinx prerequisites
Ryujinx lists prod.keys, dumped firmware or an untrimmed XCI, and dumped games or homebrew as prerequisites. These are system and game files obtained from compatible hardware, not downloads that an emulator installation supplies.
Hardware for a lawful dump workflow
Yuzu’s quick-start documentation describes a hackable Switch, a USB cable and a microSD card of at least 32 GB, with 64 GB or more recommended, for dumping workflows. The card capacities in that guide concern preparing the console and transferring files; they do not change the PC’s SSD requirement.
Use only keys, firmware and games dumped from hardware you own and are entitled to use. Possessing a capable PC does not provide a license to download someone else’s game files or system keys.
A practical setup sequence
- Identify the operating system. Confirm Windows 10 version 1803 or newer, macOS 12, or a current Linux distribution before troubleshooting graphics or installation problems.
- Record the memory configuration. Treat 8 GiB as the absolute floor and plan for 16 GB. Close memory-heavy applications during initial testing.
- Verify the CPU and GPU models. Compare the processor with the Ryzen 5 3600 reference and the graphics card with the GTX 1060 6 GB reference, then confirm Vulkan 1.2 or OpenGL 4.5 support.
- Choose the storage location. Install the emulator and game data on an SSD. Keep at least 20 GB free for the basic setup, then calculate additional space from each title’s official listing.
- Reserve library headroom. If you plan to retain multiple games, updates, DLC and shader caches, a 1 TB SSD avoids the immediate capacity squeeze that a small system drive creates.
- Prepare your own dumps. Follow the emulator’s documentation for keys, firmware and game files from your compatible console. Do not substitute downloaded copies.
- Test one representative title first. Start at native resolution and monitor memory use, temperatures and available storage before adding enhancements or moving an entire library.
Common failure modes and the appropriate fix
Crashes or very poor play on an 8 GB machine
First close other applications and check whether the operating system is paging. If the problem persists, upgrade to 16 GB before judging the CPU or GPU. Ryujinx specifically cautions that below 8 GiB can produce poor gameplay or unexpected crashes.
The emulator reports missing graphics support
Confirm the installed driver and the GPU’s Vulkan 1.2 or OpenGL 4.5 capability. A newer-looking GPU name does not help if the active driver exposes an older API. On laptops, verify which graphics processor the emulator is actually using.
The drive fills during setup or updates
Compare each game with Nintendo’s official size listing and account separately for updates, DLC and shader caches. The 20 GB setup recommendation is not a library allowance. Move the library to a larger SSD or remove retained files while preserving enough free space for the operating system.
Performance varies sharply between games
That variation is expected. No cited source supplies a universal per-game FPS table or guarantees that one CPU and GPU combination will run every title perfectly. Test the specific games you care about, keep expectations tied to your target resolution and framerate, and avoid treating a baseline part as a compatibility promise.

How to prioritize upgrades
| Symptom or constraint | First action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 8 GiB RAM or frequent paging | Upgrade to 16 GB | Memory below the documented floor can cause crashes and poor play. |
| GPU lacks Vulkan 1.2/OpenGL 4.5 | Replace or update the graphics solution | The emulator needs one of those API levels to render. |
| CPU is well below the Ryzen 5 3600 reference | Prioritize a stronger processor platform | CPU translation is central to emulation and processor type affects the experience. |
| Mechanical drive or almost-full SSD | Move emulator data to a roomy SSD | Fast storage is recommended, and capacity must cover library growth and caches. |
| Hardware meets the baseline but a title still struggles | Test that title at native resolution and check drivers | The published figures are baselines, not a universal game-by-game guarantee. |
