What hardware do you need to run voice AI models locally for a game?

There is no universal minimum PC for local voice AI in games. Your requirements depend on whether the game only generates speech (text-to-speech, or TTS), listens to the player (automatic speech recognition, or ASR), or runs both at once. The model size, inference runtime, language, number of simultaneous sessions and the game’s own graphics load all matter. Treat published VRAM figures as model or deployment estimates, not guarantees of real-time performance while playing.

For a practical starting point, a CPU-capable TTS model can work without a dedicated AI GPU. Smaller ASR models may fit in roughly 1–2 GB of GPU VRAM, while larger Whisper models use about 5–10 GB. A specific NVIDIA ASR deployment documented in version 26.02.0 of its NIM requires a compatible GPU with at least 16 GB of VRAM even though one Parakeet profile reports about 3.07–3.08 GB for the model profile itself. Those numbers describe different layers of the deployment and must not be treated as interchangeable.

Text-to-speech for generated dialogue

TTS converts text produced by a game, dialogue system or language model into audio. If characters speak generated lines but never need to understand the player, TTS is the only speech model you need. A local voice can therefore run without ASR memory or microphone input.

Speech recognition for commands or conversation

ASR listens to a microphone and converts speech to text. Player voice commands, conversational NPCs and voice-controlled menus require ASR. Recognition can be continuous or triggered by push-to-talk; continuous streaming keeps a model active and can have different memory and latency characteristics from short offline clips.

Both ASR and TTS

A conversational loop needs ASR to transcribe the player and TTS to answer. The game must also run its audio capture and playback, dialogue logic and possibly a separate language model. Add the resource use of each component rather than sizing the computer from one model’s advertised memory.

A dialogue-generation model is separate

If an LLM writes NPC responses, its CPU, RAM and VRAM needs are additional. The Whisper and ASR figures below cover speech recognition, not text generation. A machine that can transcribe speech may still be unsuitable for a local dialogue LLM.

How much GPU VRAM does ASR require?

OpenAI’s Whisper repository publishes approximate VRAM requirements for its model tiers. These are starting points for model loading, not a complete gaming-PC recommendation. Actual use also includes the runtime, audio buffers, operating system, game and any other model.

Whisper model Approximate VRAM What the figure means
Tiny About 1 GB Model-level estimate from the Whisper repository; leave additional headroom for the runtime and game.
Base About 1 GB Same approximate tier as tiny; real speed and memory use vary by implementation and hardware.
Small About 2 GB Model-level estimate, not a guarantee of streaming latency during gameplay.
Medium About 5 GB Requires substantially more graphics memory than tiny, base or small.
Large About 10 GB High-memory tier; the game must still retain its own graphics resources.
Turbo About 6 GB Approximate Whisper repository estimate; runtime overhead and language workload still apply.

Whisper’s relative speed comparisons were measured on an A100 transcribing English. The project warns that speed changes with language, speaking rate and hardware, so those results do not predict response time on a gaming GPU. Translation, multilingual recognition and longer audio can also change the workload.

Why one ASR deployment can show two very different VRAM numbers

NVIDIA’s ASR NIM documentation, version 26.02.0, illustrates the difference between a platform requirement and an individual model profile. The NIM requires a compatible NVIDIA GPU with compute capability 8.0 or higher and at least 16 GB of VRAM. Within that platform, the Parakeet 0.6B CTC English batch-size-one profiles list approximately 3.07–3.08 GB of GPU memory, depending on whether the profile is offline or streaming.

Measurement Published value How to interpret it
NVIDIA ASR NIM platform Compute capability 8.0 or higher; at least 16 GB VRAM Minimum platform requirement for that NIM release, including its runtime and deployment assumptions.
Parakeet 0.6B CTC English, batch size one About 3.07–3.08 GB GPU memory Memory listed for individual offline or streaming profiles, not a replacement for the NIM’s platform requirement.

Inference mode and concurrency matter. Offline, streaming, throughput and batched service profiles can reserve different amounts of memory. A profile designed for one session does not establish the capacity needed for several simultaneous players or NPCs. Check the exact runtime documentation for the model, operating system, driver and GPU architecture you plan to use.

What hardware can run local TTS?

TTS is often easier to run locally than ASR. The Kokoro repository describes an open-weight model with 82 million parameters and documents language codes plus a GPU-acceleration option for Apple Silicon. Parameter count is a model-size specification, not a benchmark: it does not by itself tell you the response time, memory use or voice quality on your computer.

A local voice deployment guide documents CPU configurations for Kokoro and Piper. That establishes that CPU-based TTS is a viable deployment option, but it does not establish one minimum processor, RAM amount or whole-system frame-rate target for a game. A dedicated GPU may accelerate some TTS pipelines; whether it is worthwhile depends on your selected runtime, voice, language and latency target.

Hardware tiers for common game setups

Tier 1: CPU-based TTS only

Choose this when the game already has text and only needs spoken output. Use a TTS implementation documented to run on the CPU, such as a Kokoro or Piper deployment that supports your operating system. The machine must still run the game, audio playback and any dialogue code at the same time. Test whether speech generation completes before the next line is needed; if it does not, queue audio, generate lines earlier or move the TTS workload to a GPU-supported runtime.

Tier 2: Small or base ASR with optional TTS

Whisper tiny, base or small are the lower-memory ASR tiers in the published table. A GPU with enough free VRAM for the chosen model and runtime can reduce CPU contention, but the model estimate is not the same as the graphics card’s total available capacity. A card that is nearly full from the game may fail to load the ASR model even when its nominal VRAM equals the model estimate. CPU inference can be possible with some implementations, but the supplied technical sources do not define a universal CPU specification or guarantee interactive latency.

Tier 3: Medium, large or turbo ASR

The approximate 5 GB, 10 GB and 6 GB Whisper estimates for medium, large and turbo leave less room for a game’s graphics allocation. Select the model for language accuracy and latency, then verify that the runtime supports your GPU. If the game already approaches the card’s VRAM limit, a smaller ASR model, CPU execution or a second machine may be more practical than trying to share the same GPU.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Tier 4: GPU-specific ASR services or multiple concurrent models

A service such as the documented NVIDIA ASR NIM has its own GPU architecture, driver, operating-system and VRAM requirements. This tier makes sense when you need streaming recognition, multiple sessions, a standardized server runtime or a larger model. It is not a shortcut around compatibility checks: the 16 GB NIM platform requirement still applies even when a single profile’s listed model memory is about 3 GB.

Tier 5: Full conversational stack

ASR, a dialogue LLM and TTS compete for compute and memory while the game renders frames. There is no source-backed minimum PC specification that guarantees real-time operation for this combination. Plan each component separately, avoid loading every model into the same constrained VRAM pool unless the runtime supports it, and benchmark the complete loop in the target game.

How to size the machine without overbuying

  1. Define the interaction. Write down whether you need TTS, ASR or both; push-to-talk or always-on listening; one player session or multiple concurrent voices; and which languages must be recognized or spoken.
  2. Select a model tier. For ASR, start with the smallest Whisper tier that meets your language and accuracy needs. For TTS, verify the voice and language support of Kokoro, Piper or another chosen runtime rather than inferring capability from parameter count alone.
  3. Check runtime requirements. Read the implementation’s GPU backend, driver, operating-system and compute-capability requirements. NVIDIA NIM users must meet the documented compute capability 8.0-or-higher and 16 GB VRAM platform requirement for version 26.02.0.
  4. Measure free capacity with the game running. Launch the target game at the intended resolution and quality, then load the speech model. The relevant figure is capacity remaining after the game and operating system have allocated resources, not the graphics card’s headline VRAM.
  5. Test the complete audio path. Include microphone capture, transcription, dialogue generation if present, TTS synthesis and playback. Measure whether the first spoken response arrives quickly enough and whether later lines queue up.
  6. Repeat with real conditions. Test your actual language, speaking speed, background audio, scene complexity and number of simultaneous voices. Whisper’s published A100 English results cannot substitute for this test.

CPU, RAM, storage and the rest of the system

The available sources do not establish a single minimum CPU, RAM or storage configuration for local game voice AI. That omission is important: a model that fits in VRAM can still contend for CPU time, system memory, disk loading and audio-device access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CPU: Needed for the game, operating-system work, audio input/output and any CPU-based ASR or TTS. CPU capability is especially relevant when you deliberately keep speech inference off the GPU.
  • System memory: Must hold the game, runtime, model data and buffers at the same time. Leave practical headroom instead of sizing RAM to a model’s parameter count.
  • Storage: Must hold model files, the runtime and game assets. Faster storage can shorten model-load time, but no supplied source provides a storage-speed benchmark for voice AI in games.
  • Audio hardware: ASR needs a microphone or headset input and a playback path for TTS. The evidence does not identify an ideal device specification, so treat the microphone as an input-quality decision rather than a fixed hardware requirement.

Common failure modes and fixes

The model will not load

Usually the game has consumed the available GPU memory, or the runtime has a higher platform requirement than the model profile suggests. Close other GPU workloads, lower the game’s graphics settings, choose a smaller model, run speech on the CPU or use a runtime whose hardware requirements your system meets.

Recognition works but feels too slow

Check whether you selected a large model for a low-latency interaction, whether the runtime is using CPU instead of the intended GPU backend, and whether streaming and offline modes are being confused. Compare a smaller model and test with the game active; published model speeds are not end-to-end game measurements.

TTS audio arrives after the conversation has moved on

Generate predictable lines earlier, queue playback, use a CPU-capable or GPU-accelerated runtime appropriate to your machine, or select a lighter voice model. Kokoro’s 82 million parameters do not guarantee a specific synthesis time.

Performance changes between languages

Whisper explicitly notes that language affects speed. Re-test the exact language and speaking style you expect instead of applying an English benchmark to another workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame rate drops when voice AI starts

Both the game and AI are competing for compute and memory. Profile them together, reduce model size or concurrency, move one component to CPU or another machine, and keep enough graphics capacity for the game’s normal scenes.

Do you need a new GPU?

Not automatically. If you only need CPU-capable TTS, a GPU upgrade may not address the bottleneck. For ASR, available free VRAM and runtime compatibility matter more than a generic “AI-ready” label. The Whisper estimates make an 8 GB card a possible search starting point for some smaller or turbo configurations, but they do not establish an 8 GB minimum for every pipeline, nor do they guarantee room for the game, runtime overhead or a dialogue LLM.

Upgrade when your chosen runtime requires a capability your current GPU lacks, the model cannot fit alongside the game, or measured latency remains unacceptable after selecting an appropriate model and mode. Otherwise, first try a smaller model, CPU-based TTS, lower concurrency or a split deployment.

What the evidence can and cannot promise

No cited source benchmarks a named game running a complete ASR-plus-TTS pipeline, reports frame-rate impact, or guarantees a response time. The only defensible minimum is therefore conditional: choose the workload, model and runtime, meet that runtime’s documented hardware requirements, reserve resources for the game and verify the result on your own system. A successful model load is not proof of a responsive in-game conversation.
