For local rendering, Hogwarts Legacy’s DLSS 5 update requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA has not named a minimum RTX 50 model or a universal VRAM capacity. The 3D-Guided Neural Rendering update is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and is also listed for GeForce NOW and RTX Spark. Your practical choice still depends on resolution, ray-tracing settings, native rendered frame rate, CPU headroom and whether you are using a desktop or a laptop.

When DLSS 5 arrives in Hogwarts Legacy

NVIDIA announced on October 13, 2026 that DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is coming to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026. The announcement names three ways to use it: a local GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU, GeForce NOW, or RTX Spark. The date is a planned update date, so the feature will not be available in the game before that release unless NVIDIA or the developer changes the schedule.

Hogwarts Legacy already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. The November update adds DLSS Neural Rendering and updates the game’s other DLSS technologies. That distinction matters: existing RTX support does not automatically mean an older card will receive the new Neural Rendering mode.

NVIDIA’s Andrew Burnes described the update as “DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering” for GeForce RTX 50 Series, GeForce NOW and RTX Spark. NVIDIA has not published a separate Hogwarts Legacy minimum for the feature beyond those compatibility targets.

The local GPU requirement

RTX 50 Series is the stated compatibility line

If the game is rendered on your own computer, plan around a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA’s announcement does not identify an RTX 5060, 5070, 5080 or 5090 as the minimum. It also does not publish a model-by-model performance tier. Therefore, “RTX 50 Series supported” answers whether DLSS 5 can run, not how well every setting will perform.

A card that is technically compatible may still be a poor match for a 4K ray-traced preset, a high-refresh monitor or a CPU-limited system. Choose the specific model by the workload you want before treating DLSS 5 as a reason to buy the most expensive card.

Cloud and alternative options

GeForce NOW moves the local rendering workload to NVIDIA’s cloud service, while RTX Spark is another NVIDIA-listed way to access the update. In those cases, your own graphics card is not the component rendering Hogwarts Legacy locally. You still need a supported game edition, a connection and a client device that can display the stream, but NVIDIA’s announcement does not provide service-tier performance or latency guarantees for this title.

What NVIDIA has established about VRAM

The measured efficiency changes

NVIDIA says the October DLSS 5 model reduces 4K VRAM usage by 20 percent compared with the earlier model. It also shrinks the model footprint by 24 percent, to roughly 118 million parameters, and cuts GPU overhead to half that of the September version at comparable visual fidelity.

Those are relative efficiency figures. They describe how the October model compares with NVIDIA’s previous DLSS 5 model; they are not a promise that every RTX 50 card has enough memory for every combination of resolution, ray tracing, texture quality, mods and background applications.

There is no published DLSS 5 minimum VRAM number

NVIDIA has not stated a Hogwarts Legacy-specific minimum VRAM capacity for DLSS 5. Do not interpret the 20 percent figure as “the game needs 20 percent less than a particular card’s memory,” and do not treat 118 million parameters as a direct VRAM requirement. Model storage, game assets, render targets and operating-system allocations all contribute to actual memory use.

The safest buying rule is to select an RTX 50 card with enough memory for your intended resolution and ray-tracing preset, then leave headroom for the game’s non-DLSS allocations. Because no official capacity threshold exists, a hard “X GB minimum” would be an invented guarantee.

Hogwarts Legacy’s own PC tiers provide workload context

The game’s published PC table describes the base game, not a DLSS 5 threshold. It is useful for understanding how quickly the workload rises as resolution and quality increase.

Target tier Graphics hardware listed by the game System requirements and notes
Minimum/Low GeForce GTX 960 4GB or Radeon RX 470 4GB Base-game low tier; DirectX 12 and 85GB storage are specified for the PC version.
Recommended/High GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 XT or Intel Arc A770 16GB system RAM is listed.
Ultra 1440p GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 XT 32GB system RAM is listed; an SSD is required for the higher tiers.
Ultra 4K GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT 32GB system RAM is listed; an SSD is required for the higher tiers.

These rows are not substitutes for an RTX 50-series DLSS 5 specification. They show that 4K Ultra is a substantially heavier target than the low and high presets, and that system memory and storage requirements rise with the upper tiers. DLSS can reduce the cost of producing the final image, but it does not remove the game’s textures, world data, ray-tracing work or CPU simulation from the system.

How to size an RTX 50 card for your display

1080p

At 1080p, the graphics workload may be low enough that the processor becomes the limiting component, especially when a frame-generation mode is enabled. Check native rendered performance and CPU utilization rather than judging the result by the displayed frame-rate number alone. An RTX 50 card can be compatible while delivering little practical benefit if the game is CPU-bound.

1440p

1440p is a balanced target for testing ray tracing and DLSS together. Compare cards by the native frame rate they produce before Multi Frame Generation, the ray-tracing preset you intend to use and their available VRAM. The game’s Ultra 1440p tier names RTX 2080 Ti-class hardware as base-game context; DLSS 5 support itself remains tied to RTX 50-series hardware.

4K

4K places the greatest pressure on render targets, textures and memory. NVIDIA’s 20 percent lower 4K VRAM-use figure is helpful, but it is not a capacity guarantee. Start with the game’s Ultra 4K reference tier, then allow additional margin for ray tracing, mods, high-refresh output and other applications. Verify that your card can sustain an acceptable native frame rate before counting generated frames.

Laptop versus desktop

Two products carrying the same RTX 50-series family name can behave differently in a laptop and a desktop. Laptop power limits, cooling, shared system memory and the machine’s CPU affect sustained performance. Treat the GPU family as the compatibility requirement, then check the laptop’s configured power limit and the manufacturer’s complete specification rather than assuming desktop results apply.

Frame generation and Neural Rendering are different workloads

What Multi Frame Generation does

NVIDIA’s developer documentation says DLSS Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five AI frames per rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell-generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. The feature increases the number of displayed frames by inserting AI-generated images between conventionally rendered frames.

That output rate is an upper capability, not a guaranteed setting in every game, mode or scene. The game, driver and selected DLSS options determine which modes are exposed. Hogwarts Legacy’s November update adds Neural Rendering while retaining the game’s existing DLSS technologies, so frame generation and Neural Rendering should be evaluated as separate options in the graphics menu.

Why native performance still matters

Generated frames do not replace the frames your GPU and CPU must render. If the underlying frame rate is unstable, input response and pacing can remain unsatisfactory even when the displayed counter is high. Ray tracing, crowded areas, traversal and CPU-heavy simulation can all reduce the base rate that frame generation has to work with.

For a fair comparison, record three values: native rendered FPS with frame generation disabled, displayed FPS with the selected generation mode enabled and frame-time behavior during movement through demanding areas. A high displayed number without adequate native performance is not evidence that a weaker card meets your target.

Can RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards run DLSS 5 in Hogwarts Legacy?

The official announcement does not confirm DLSS 5 Neural Rendering support for RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards. It specifically lists GeForce RTX 50 Series for local rendering. Those older generations can continue to use the Hogwarts Legacy DLSS features already supported by the game, subject to the game’s settings and driver support, but that is not confirmation of the new DLSS 5 mode.

If you own an RTX 40 or RTX 30 card, install the November update and check the in-game options and NVIDIA’s subsequent compatibility notes. Do not buy or sell hardware on the assumption that an older generation will receive Neural Rendering until NVIDIA or the developer explicitly confirms it.

A practical pre-purchase and setup checklist

  1. Set the target. Write down your resolution, refresh rate, ray-tracing preset and whether you want a quality-focused or performance-focused image.
  2. Confirm the platform. For local DLSS 5, use a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. If you do not want local rendering, investigate the separately listed GeForce NOW or RTX Spark route.
  3. Check the complete system. Use DirectX 12, confirm the 85GB storage requirement, and use an SSD for the higher game tiers. The Ultra 1440p and Ultra 4K rows list 32GB of system RAM; the recommended/high row lists 16GB.
  4. Compare native rendering. Test or estimate performance with frame generation disabled at the intended resolution and ray-tracing preset.
  5. Check memory headroom. Use the card’s actual VRAM capacity and your texture, mod and background-application load. There is no official DLSS 5-specific minimum to substitute for this check.
  6. Enable features one at a time. Apply the game’s DLSS quality option, then Neural Rendering and Multi Frame Generation separately so you can identify image-quality, pacing or latency changes.
  7. Validate demanding scenes. Walk through busy areas and traversal sequences, not only a quiet interior. Watch frame times, CPU utilization, GPU utilization and memory use.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming an RTX 5090 is mandatory

NVIDIA has not named the RTX 5090, or any other individual RTX 50 model, as a minimum. Buying that model is a performance choice, not a published compatibility requirement.

Turning the efficiency percentage into a VRAM guarantee

A 20 percent reduction in 4K VRAM use does not specify the total memory consumed by Hogwarts Legacy on your settings. Keep the figure in its proper context: it compares the October DLSS 5 model with the earlier model.

Counting generated frames as rendered frames

Multi Frame Generation can raise the displayed rate, but the game still needs a stable rendered base. Evaluate responsiveness and frame times alongside the counter.

Using base-game tiers as DLSS 5 requirements

The GTX, Radeon and Intel recommendations in the game’s PC table describe conventional Hogwarts Legacy workload tiers. They do not establish which RTX 50 card is sufficient for Neural Rendering.

What remains unknown

  • NVIDIA has not published a universal Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 VRAM minimum.
  • No per-model RTX 50 performance target or official FPS table is available.
  • No latency guarantee has been published for Multi Frame Generation in this game.
  • RTX 40 and RTX 30 support for the DLSS 5 Neural Rendering feature has not been confirmed.
  • Official information does not establish how laptop power limits change DLSS 5 performance.

Until those details are published, the defensible buying decision is to treat RTX 50-series ownership as the local compatibility gate and size the rest of the system around your chosen resolution, ray tracing, native frame rate and memory workload.
