Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026, changing the corporate owner above the Hogwarts Legacy franchise. The sequel itself was already named in Warner Bros. Discovery’s game pipeline in 2025, and the available announcements do not say that the deal changed its development, release plans, platforms, or creative direction.
Who owns Warner Bros. Discovery now?
Skydance Corporation announced on October 6, 2026, that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery after required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. This is a change in the corporate ownership of the businesses that publish and manage Warner Bros. properties. It is not an announcement that Netflix bought Warner Bros. Discovery; the completed transaction described by Skydance was its acquisition.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s February 27, 2025 shareholder letter identified “the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy” as part of its Games pipeline. That confirms the company had publicly named a second installment as a pipeline project. The letter does not provide a release date, platforms, developer assignment, story details, budget, or a description of its production status. The October 2026 acquisition announcement does not add a game-specific update.
What might the ownership change mean for the game?
The acquisition puts the game within a new corporate structure, so its parent company’s priorities and decisions could affect the business around it. But the public materials cited here do not establish any resulting decision about this sequel. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount’s February 27, 2026 merger announcement discussed maintaining both studios, attracting and retaining creative talent, expanding content supply, and combining direct-to-consumer businesses. In practical terms, the distinction is between a change in ownership above the project and a confirmed change to the project. Only the first is established by the announcements. A delay, cancellation, platform exclusivity, or shift in creative direction should not be treated as a consequence of the acquisition without a direct announcement.
What has not been announced?
- Release timing: Warner Bros. Discovery’s pipeline reference gives no launch window. A Windows Central report published August 13, 2026, repeats the shareholder-letter confirmation; its suggested 2027 or 2028 reveal timing is the author’s speculation, not a company announcement. - Acquisition effects: Neither the closing announcement nor the pipeline reference specifies a change to the sequel because of the ownership deal.
For now, the firm update is the corporate one: Skydance’s acquisition closed, while the sequel remains a project previously identified in Warner Bros. Discovery’s pipeline. Any more specific claim needs a later, game-focused announcement.
