Choose Java first. A technical server that needs Paper plugins, custom server files, or Java mod loaders should run on Java Edition using a managed Minecraft host, VPS, or your own machine. Use Bedrock when most players are on consoles, phones, Windows Bedrock, or other Bedrock devices. Java and Bedrock are separate ecosystems: they cannot join the same server directly, and Realms cross-play remains within one edition.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For a small group that wants almost no administration, Realms is the simplest option. For technical control, select hosting that exposes files and logs, lets you choose the exact server software and Java runtime, allows JVM memory settings, provides downloadable backups, and states its CPU allocation and data-center region.

Start with the edition, because it determines every hosting choice
Java Edition for technical flexibility
Java Edition is the practical starting point for a technical server built around plugins, custom server jars, datapacks, automation, or large mod collections. You can choose vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge, or another compatible server implementation, then manage configuration files, startup arguments, permissions, worlds, and scheduled jobs. That flexibility is useful only if the host gives you access to those files and settings.
Bedrock Edition for a Bedrock-first group
Bedrock is the better fit when the player group is primarily on consoles, mobile devices, Windows Bedrock, or other Bedrock platforms. Mojang’s Bedrock Dedicated Server requirements list 4 GB of RAM. That is a published software requirement, not a promise that every world or player count will perform well with exactly 4 GB.

Java and Bedrock do not share a server
Java and Bedrock use different server software and network protocols. A Java player cannot directly join a Bedrock server, and a Bedrock player cannot directly join a Java server. Realms does not remove that boundary: Java Realms supports Java players, while Bedrock Realms supports Bedrock players. If your group is split between editions, decide whether everyone can use one edition or whether you need a separate, technically complex bridging project; do not assume a normal host or Realms subscription supplies cross-edition play.
Compare the five practical hosting routes
| Option | Best for | Main strengths | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Realms | Small Java friend group that values convenience | Official service, always online, simple invitations, little administration | Java-only, capped concurrency, limited low-level control, not a general plugin or mod host |
| Bedrock Realms or Realms Plus | Small Bedrock group across supported devices | Official service, always online, simple invitations and management | Bedrock-only, capped concurrency, not a general Java server environment |
| Managed Minecraft host | Technical players who want control without maintaining an operating system | Web panel, file access, selectable server jars, backups, console, easier migration and scaling | Recurring fee; CPU quality, regions, backup retention, and mod support vary by provider |
| VPS or dedicated server | Experienced operators, unusual workloads, or custom automation | Root access, predictable allocated resources, custom networking and monitoring | You maintain the operating system, Java, security, backups, monitoring, and updates |
| Home self-hosting | Existing hardware, a lab, or a private LAN | Maximum control and no hosting subscription | Power, uptime, upload bandwidth, router exposure, hardware failure, and support are your responsibility |
When Realms is enough
Realms is a managed baseline for a small private group. Mojang’s current comparison lists Java Realms at $7.99 USD per month for the owner plus 10 simultaneous players. For Bedrock, Realms is listed at $3.99 USD per month for the owner plus two simultaneous players, while Realms Plus is $7.99 USD per month for the owner plus 10. These are the listed subscription prices and player limits; taxes, local pricing, and billing terms can differ by region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Realms when your priorities are an official service, invitations that are easy for non-technical players, and an always-online world without patching a server. It is a poor fit when you need arbitrary Java plugins, a mod loader, root access, custom startup flags, server-side performance tuning, or detailed file-level automation. A technical world may outgrow Realms even if its player count remains small, because the limitation is control rather than only capacity.

Pick server software that matches the workload
Vanilla
Vanilla is the reference implementation and the least complicated choice when everyone wants the unmodified game. It minimizes compatibility questions, but it does not provide the plugin ecosystem or performance-oriented configuration available from other Java server implementations.
Paper
Paper is the usual choice for a technical Java server that needs Bukkit- or Spigot-compatible plugins and extensive server configuration. It adds performance and operational controls while retaining compatibility with a large plugin ecosystem. Check every plugin against the exact Minecraft version and Paper build you intend to run.
Runtime compatibility is version-specific. Paper’s Getting Started documentation currently states that Paper requires at least Java 25 to run, and its current guidance lists Java 25 for 26.1 and later builds. Do not install a Java runtime merely because it worked for an older world; verify the requirement for your chosen server jar before migration.

Fabric
Use Fabric when the mods you require target Fabric. Fabric is a loader and mod ecosystem rather than a universal replacement for Paper plugins. Confirm that the loader, every mod, and the Minecraft version all match. A mod that exists for Fabric is not automatically available for Paper or Forge.
Forge or NeoForge
Choose Forge or NeoForge when the modpack you want requires that loader. Treat the modpack as a locked dependency set: loader version, Minecraft version, Java version, configuration files, and client installation must agree. Ask a host whether it supports the exact loader and whether you can upload custom jars and configuration files before purchasing.
Use this checklist before buying managed hosting
1. Confirm the exact edition, version, and runtime
- Write down Java or Bedrock before comparing plans.
- For Java, record the Minecraft version, server jar, loader, and required Java runtime.
- Ask whether the panel permits version pinning, custom jar uploads, and changing the startup command.
- For a Paper 26.1 or later build, verify that the host offers Java 25 or the runtime required by that specific build.
2. Demand meaningful CPU information
Tick processing, redstone-heavy areas, chunk generation, and simulation can become CPU-bound while memory still appears available. Ask whether the plan uses a dedicated core, a shared vCPU, or a fair-use policy; request the CPU model or at least its generation and single-thread performance. “Unlimited CPU” without an allocation or fair-use explanation is not a useful specification.

3. Make memory configurable and leave headroom
The panel should let you set Java -Xms and -Xmx values rather than hiding them behind an inflexible preset. Leave memory for the operating system, panel, monitoring, and native processes instead of assigning every gigabyte to the Java heap. Paper’s example command is:
Recommended Free Tools
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui
This command demonstrates syntax and a 4 GB heap; it is not a universal RAM recommendation. There is no reliable RAM-per-player formula because world size, simulation distance, entity counts, plugins, mods, and chunk-generation practices change the result. Watch allocation and garbage-collection behavior under your real workload, then adjust conservatively.
4. Check storage, snapshots, and restore
- Prefer SSD or NVMe storage for world files and region-file access.
- Require automated backups with a stated schedule and retention period.
- Confirm that backups are stored separately from the running server, preferably off the same physical disk.
- Download a complete world backup yourself and test restoring it to a temporary instance.
- Ask whether restore operations or extra retention incur fees.
5. Select a nearby, protected network location
Choose a data center close to most players to reduce latency. Check the provider’s DDoS protection, bandwidth policy, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, and the ports supported by your edition and software. A panel should expose connection details clearly and provide logs when players cannot connect.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
6. Verify the mod and plugin workflow
- Confirm support for Paper, Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge as applicable.
- Check that you can upload a custom jar and pin its version rather than being forced onto the latest release.
- Look for SFTP or equivalent file access, console access, log downloads, scheduled restarts, and environment-variable or JVM-argument controls.
- Ask how the host handles loader updates and whether a failed update can be rolled back.
7. Check operational and migration features
Useful controls include startup and crash logs, automatic restart after a crash, health monitoring, role-based access for co-administrators, and a documented export process. You should be able to leave the provider with a complete world, configuration, and permission backup rather than a proprietary archive that cannot run elsewhere.
What self-hosting requires
Self-hosting can be the lowest recurring-cost route when you already own a suitable always-on machine and can maintain it. Mojang’s official server software is free, but free software does not remove operating costs or administration. You supply the hardware, electricity, storage, backups, network connection, and time.
Home network obligations
Players outside your home network generally need router port-forwarding and firewall rules. Java commonly uses port 25565; Bedrock uses its documented default ports. The exact rule depends on your router, operating system, and server software. Exposing a residential connection also increases the importance of strong account security, timely patching, restricted permissions, and a plan for outages or changing public IP addresses.
Maintenance obligations
- Install operating-system and Java security updates.
- Patch the server jar, loader, plugins, and mods while checking compatibility.
- Automate backups and keep at least one copy off the host machine.
- Monitor disk space, memory, CPU saturation, crashes, and network availability.
- Use an allowlist and least-privilege operator accounts.
- Keep a tested recovery procedure for disk failure, corruption, or a bad update.
A VPS or dedicated machine moves the hardware and residential-network issues to a data center but leaves most of the software responsibility with you. It is worthwhile when you need root access, custom automation, multiple services, or predictable resource allocation and already understand Linux administration, firewalling, and monitoring.
How to migrate a technical world safely
- Freeze the source world. Announce a maintenance window, stop new building, and shut down the old server cleanly so region and player files are flushed.
- Export everything. Copy the world or worlds, server properties, allowlist and operator files, plugin or mod directories, configuration files, datapacks, resource-pack references, and any scripts. Keep the original untouched.
- Record versions. Note the Minecraft version, server jar or loader, Java runtime, plugin and mod versions, world seed if available, and simulation settings.
- Create a disposable test instance. Install the exact target jar and Java runtime. Start it with a command such as
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --noguionly as an example of syntax, then use the memory values appropriate for your workload. - Restore the copy, not the original. Test player inventories, permissions, redstone, farms, chunk loading, scheduled commands, plugins or mods, and client connections. Read the startup log for version or dependency errors.
- Verify backups and recovery. Create a backup on the new host, download it, and restore it to a second temporary instance. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Switch the connection details. Share the new address only after testing. Keep the old server offline but preserved until players confirm that the migration is complete.
- Invite players gradually. Start with administrators, then add the wider group. Watch CPU, memory, disk, and logs during the first busy session.
Decision guide by player group
| Your situation | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small Java group, no mods or custom administration | Java Realms | Lowest administration burden and official always-online access |
| Small Bedrock group on consoles or mobile | Bedrock Realms or Realms Plus | Edition compatibility and simple invitations matter more than server files |
| Java plugins, scheduled tasks, performance tuning, or custom files | Managed Java host running Paper | Provides panel and file control without requiring you to maintain an operating system |
| Large modpack tied to a specific loader | Managed host or VPS that supports the exact Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge stack | Loader, Java, mod versions, and configuration must be pinned together |
| Multiple services, root automation, or unusual networking | VPS or dedicated server | Root access and predictable resources justify the additional administration |
| Existing hardware and a technically capable operator | Self-hosting | Maximum control and no hosting subscription, with all maintenance retained by you |
Common mistakes that cause avoidable problems
- Choosing by RAM alone: a large heap cannot compensate for weak or throttled CPU performance when ticks, redstone, or chunk generation are the bottleneck.
- Ignoring the Java runtime: a server jar can refuse to start or behave unpredictably when the installed Java version does not meet its requirement.
- Assuming all “mod support” is equal: ask for the exact loader, Minecraft version, custom-jar policy, and configuration access.
- Putting backups on the same disk: a failed disk can destroy both the world and its backups.
- Testing only a clean world: migration failures often appear in existing chunks, inventories, permissions, plugin data, or modded blocks.
- Promising Java-Bedrock cross-play: edition boundaries remain even when both games are called Minecraft; Realms does not merge them.
- Opening a home server without a security plan: port-forwarding requires firewall rules, updates, access controls, and monitoring.
- Skipping an exit plan: retain a complete downloadable world and configuration backup so you can move hosts without starting over.
The short recommendation
For a technical Java server, begin by selecting the exact Minecraft version and software stack, then choose a managed host that provides Paper or your required loader, configurable JVM memory, clear CPU allocation, SSD/NVMe storage, automated off-site backups, nearby data centers, and full file and log access. Move to a VPS or dedicated server when you need root-level automation and can take on operating-system and security work. Self-host only when you already have the hardware, bandwidth, and maintenance discipline.
Use Realms when the group is small and convenience is more important than plugins, mods, or low-level control. Choose Bedrock hosting when the group is Bedrock-first. Making the edition decision before comparing plans prevents the most expensive mistake: renting a server that cannot run the software or accept the players you actually have.
