Stop rubbing or scraping the card, and keep both the card and its matching retail receipt. For a physical Steam Wallet card with a damaged or unreadable code, Steam Support asks you to send a clear, unedited photo or scan of the entire back of the card. Steam does not promise a particular outcome, but this is the official route to ask for help.
What to do first
- Stop trying to remove more of the coating. Keep the card as it is; Steam specifically says not to edit or mark it.
- Save the matching retail receipt. Steam’s Wallet FAQ asks for it when a redemption problem persists.
- Check any characters you can still read. Steam notes these commonly confused characters: 0 may be Q, O, or D; 1 may be I; O may be 0, Q, or D; B may be 8; and G may be 6. Try plausible substitutions carefully rather than repeatedly guessing.
- If the card was just purchased, allow several hours for activation. A newly bought card may not be active immediately; this wait is about retailer activation, not Steam Support’s response time.
- Contact Steam Support through its damaged Wallet code support path. Include a clear, unedited photo or scan of the entire back of the physical card, along with the matching receipt if the redemption issue continues. Steam’s instructions are at How to Send Wallet Codes For Steam Support.
What to send Steam Support
Steam says a damaged or unreadable Wallet code report should include a clear image of the entire back side of the card, not just a close-up of the scratched area. Do not alter the image or write on the card before photographing it. The official damaged-code instructions explain how to provide that evidence; the Steam Wallet FAQ also says to include the matching retail receipt when the issue persists. These materials help Steam investigate, but the guidance does not guarantee that Steam can recover the code or replace the card.

If the code was printed on a receipt
A code printed directly on a receipt is different from a code on a physical Steam Wallet card. Steam says it cannot assist with receipt-printed codes, so contact the retailer that issued the receipt.
Protect the code from scams
Do not post the code or card details publicly, and do not give the code to someone who contacts you offering to recover it. Steam warns that requests to pay someone with Steam Wallet gift cards are likely scams and says not to give a card to someone you do not know. Use the official support process instead.

Can you still redeem a physical Steam gift card?
Steam’s Wallet FAQ says physical gift-card retail sales are ending as existing stock runs out, but previously purchased physical cards can still be redeemed; digital gift cards continue. Retail availability varies, and Steam notes that use of existing cards is subject to local laws. This does not change the recovery steps for a damaged card.
