Roger Clark, who performed Arthur, said he aimed for consistency rather than tying the character’s dialect to one specific place.
Why Arthur’s accent does not fit one precise region
Clark explained that Red Dead Redemption 2 is historically grounded but geographically fictionalized, and that Arthur had traveled around the country from a young age. Those details gave Clark room to shape the character’s voice without assigning it to a specific real-world location.

In a 2019 Twinfinite interview, Clark said, “Red Dead is historically accurate but not geographically, so I think it gives a little bit of artistic license as to Arthur’s dialect not having to be from one specific location.” He also told Shacknews that he was aiming more for consistency than accuracy.
What influenced Roger Clark’s performance
Clark said a friend from Flagstaff, Arizona helped him with dialect when he was first being considered for the role. He was asked to adopt an American accent for the audition, then drew on his long-standing interest in Western films. He named The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, High Noon, and John Wayne films as shared reference points with director Rod Edge.

Those influences describe the performance’s creative background, not a claim that Arthur speaks with the exact accent of a particular actor, film character, or American region. Clark did not name Texas, Appalachia, Georgia, or any other specific place as the definitive source of Arthur’s voice.
Is Arthur Morgan’s accent Southern?
“Southern-sounding” is a reasonable way to describe what some listeners hear, alongside the broader Western quality. It should be treated as an impression rather than a formal dialect classification: the interviews establish Clark’s intentions, not a phonetic analysis of every pronunciation in the game. The most accurate short description is a performed American Western accent with Southern-sounding elements, deliberately left geographically broad.

How the performance was recorded
Clark has described his work on Red Dead Redemption 2 as primarily performance capture, with scenes acted out rather than recorded only in a voice booth. In a 2019 Shacknews interview, he compared the cast’s work to acting for theater or film while noting that booth recording was also part of the job. In a 2024 StarTrek.com interview, Clark estimated that about 10 percent of his work on the game took place in a recording booth. That percentage is his estimate of his own work, not a general production figure.
