The Legend of Zelda drew on more than one source. Shigeru Miyamoto said the adventure films of the era, including Indiana Jones, and the way computer RPG players shared information helped spark the idea. He also brought in memories of exploring the Japanese countryside as a child. Those influences came together in a treasure-hunting adventure set in a world of swords and sorcery.
What Miyamoto said inspired Zelda
In a 2016 interview with Nintendo, Miyamoto described several starting points for the original The Legend of Zelda. The Indiana Jones movies were popular at the time, he said, and he wanted to bring that sense of adventure into a video game. He was also intrigued by computer RPG players who talked about their characters and swords and called one another to exchange information about their progress. Nintendo’s interview records his account.
Miyamoto said the team settled on “a world of swords and sorcery” and a “treasure-hunting” adventure as the theme and starting point. These remarks describe a blend of contemporary adventure-film atmosphere, fantasy, and a social style of play built around sharing discoveries—not a single inspiration that explains every part of the game.
How Miyamoto’s childhood explorations shaped the experience
Miyamoto grew up in the Japanese countryside, where he played in rice paddies and explored hillsides. In a 2015 Fresh Air interview hosted by Terry Gross, he recalled hiking up a mountain and finding a large lake near the summit. He explicitly connected that memory to Zelda’s sense of scale and discovery:

How those influences became a game about discovery
The childhood lake story is meaningful, but it is not the whole origin story. Miyamoto’s account also includes adventure films and computer RPG culture, while the team’s initial concept was treasure-hunting in a swords-and-sorcery setting. Taken together, these influences help explain why exploration and finding things are central to the game’s premise without reducing its design to one childhood memory.
The 2016 Nintendo interview also describes how the original game’s booklet supported that style of play: it included instructions, story details that served as hints, and strategies for solving puzzles. Miyamoto said this helped establish the epic setting and assisted players who were new to this kind of adventure. The booklet was part of how the game invited players to make sense of its world and uncover its secrets.

Was Zelda inspired by a cave Miyamoto explored?
Miyamoto’s documented childhood account here concerns outdoor exploration and a mountain lake, which he connected to moving from confined spaces into a grand outdoor setting. It does not establish that discovering a cave alone created Zelda. The stronger account is that personal exploration contributed to the game alongside the adventure films and RPG-player culture Miyamoto also named.
