For the quickest realistic download, target a 500 Mbps connection or faster. Using a 120GB planning estimate, a 500 Mbps line takes about 32 minutes in ideal arithmetic, while 1 Gbps takes about 16 minutes. A 100 Mbps connection is usable but takes about 2 hours 40 minutes. Those figures are estimates, not promises: Rockstar has not published GTA VI’s final download size, and server demand, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions and console limits can extend the wait.
The 120GB figure comes from a Uswitch estimate reported by TechRadar in June 2026. Rockstar’s store, the PlayStation Store and Xbox’s listing confirm the November 19, 2026 release but do not state a final byte size.

What speed should you choose?
If “quickly” means starting to play within roughly half an hour, 500 Mbps is the practical target under the published 120GB estimate. A 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) service gives more margin when your household is busy or the game servers are under load, but it cannot guarantee a 16-minute completion. At 100 Mbps, expect a multi-hour download rather than a quick one.

GTA 6 size and launch dates: what is confirmed
No official final download size yet
As of the first-party listings checked for this article, Rockstar has not published an official GTA VI download-size number for either PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version, and Xbox lists the Series X|S version, both for November 19, 2026, without a byte-size specification. Treat any precise number circulating before Rockstar updates those listings as provisional.

Where the 120GB figure comes from
TechRadar’s June 29, 2026 analysis used a 120GB estimate attributed to Uswitch. It is a planning model, not a Rockstar specification. The download-time figures below are TechRadar’s reproduction of a Uswitch table calculated from that estimate. They are useful for choosing a connection tier, but they must be recalculated when the final installed or download package size is announced.
Pre-loading schedule
Rockstar’s official store listing gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and says physical editions include a download code to support pre-loading on November 12, 2026. Pre-loading moves most of the wait away from launch day; it does not change the amount of data your connection must receive. Check the store page for your edition because launch-day access and any final unlock requirement can differ from the pre-load window.
Estimated download times at each connection speed
The following times use the 120GB estimate and idealized throughput. “Mbps” means megabits per second; your plan’s advertised rate is not necessarily the sustained rate delivered to the console throughout the transfer.

TechRadar also cited a US average download speed of roughly 300 Mbps in the same analysis. That figure is geographic context, not a GTA 6 requirement: a household’s actual sustained rate, not a national average, determines its download time.

Why the table can be optimistic
Game-server demand
At launch and when pre-loading opens, many players may request the same large package. The publisher or platform can throttle transfers or experience heavy demand. Even a gigabit connection cannot pull data faster than the remote server will send it.
Congestion and household traffic
Streaming video, cloud backups, software updates and another person’s game download compete for the same connection. The table assumes the console receives the full listed rate continuously. If several users share a 100 Mbps line, the console’s portion can be much lower.
Wi-Fi conditions
Distance from the router, walls, interference and the console’s wireless radio can make Wi-Fi fluctuate. A speed test on a phone beside the router does not prove that the console will sustain the same rate in another room.

Console and platform limits
The PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, its storage activity and the platform’s download service can become the bottleneck. The arithmetic therefore describes a best-case transfer, not a guaranteed completion timestamp.

Data caps and billing rules
A 120GB transfer consumes substantial data. If your broadband plan has a monthly cap or overage charge, check the allowance before starting the download and any pre-load. A faster tier does not remove a cap.
Ethernet or Wi-Fi: which is better for the download?
Use Ethernet when practical. Broadband expert Max Beckett, quoted by TechRadar, recommends connecting the router directly to a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S with an Ethernet cable to keep speeds consistent. A wired path avoids many wireless interference and coverage problems; it does not bypass server congestion or a slow internet plan.
Set up a wired download
- Place the console where you can run a cable safely from the router, or use an existing in-wall network outlet.
- Connect a Cat6 Ethernet cable to a LAN port on the router and the network port on the console. Cat6 is a common choice for a wired PS5 or Xbox connection; verify cable length and connector compatibility before buying.
- On the console’s network settings, select the wired connection and run its built-in connection test. Menu names vary by system software, so use the current PS5 or Xbox network-settings labels shown on your device.
- Pause other downloads and ask household users to avoid heavy streaming or backups during the transfer.
- Start the download or pre-load, then watch the console’s progress estimate rather than assuming the ideal table time.
When Wi-Fi is the only option
Move the router and console into a clearer path if possible, keep them away from large obstructions and reduce competing wireless traffic. Prefer the router’s faster available band when the console and router both support it, but judge the result by the console’s own test and download rate. If the rate repeatedly drops, a temporary wired run is usually more dependable than changing internet tiers.

- Confirm the edition and platform. The listed console versions are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Physical editions use a download code for pre-loading according to Rockstar’s store listing.
- Reserve storage. The final required space is not yet published, so leave substantially more free space than the 120GB planning estimate until the platform reports an official requirement. Do not treat 120GB as a confirmed installation figure.
- Measure sustained speed at the console. Run the platform’s network test at the time you normally download. Record the result while other household traffic is active; that is more useful than the headline tier alone.
- Choose a start time. At 10 Mbps, the estimate exceeds a day; at 100 Mbps, it is several hours. Start immediately when pre-loading opens if your connection is in those ranges.
- Leave the console powered in its supported rest or standby mode. Check the current system settings and power-saving behavior so downloads can continue while you are away.
- Keep launch-day margin. A game may require a patch or a final entitlement check after the main package arrives. Finishing the pre-load early leaves time for those steps.
How to recalculate when Rockstar publishes the size
Replace the 120GB assumption with the official download size and scale the idealized times proportionally. For example, if the final package is 10% larger, each table time is approximately 10% longer; if it is 25% smaller, each is approximately 25% shorter. This proportional estimate still excludes server demand, congestion, Wi-Fi variation and console limits.
Use the final size shown by Rockstar or your platform for storage planning, and use the measured sustained speed at the console for scheduling. Keep the release and pre-load dates separate from the size calculation: November 12 is the scheduled pre-load date, while November 19 is the listed release date.
Practical recommendations by situation
You have 100 Mbps
Do not upgrade solely for the word “GTA 6” if a multi-hour wait is acceptable. Based on the estimate, schedule the download during pre-loading, use Ethernet if available and avoid simultaneous household traffic.

You have 300 Mbps
This is faster than the 100 Mbps example but slower than the 500 Mbps half-hour target. The idealized time falls between the table’s 250 Mbps and 500 Mbps entries; real conditions determine where it lands. Pre-load rather than relying on launch-day downloading.

You have 500 Mbps
This is the clearest match for a roughly half-hour target under the 120GB model. Keep a margin for server load and use a wired connection if the console is far from the router.
You have 1 Gbps
Gigabit service offers the most headroom in the listed scenarios, with a 16-minute idealized estimate. It is still possible for the platform or server to deliver less, so pre-loading remains the safest way to be ready at launch.
You have a slow or capped connection
Prioritize the November 12 pre-load, verify your data allowance and start as soon as the download becomes available. A faster plan helps only if the upgrade is available at your address and does not introduce a restrictive cap or other limitation.
