A branded blimp is a lighter-than-air airship whose envelope displays a company name, logo or other identity. Helium provides lift; the airship’s structure preserves its shape; engines and propellers move it; and tail surfaces steer it. At sporting and entertainment events, the aircraft can also provide aerial video. One technical wrinkle: “blimp” strictly means a non-rigid airship, while the modern Goodyear aircraft described in the company’s materials are semi-rigid Zeppelin NT airships.

What is a branded blimp?

It is an airship used in part as a highly visible advertising display. The company’s identity is placed on the aircraft’s large outer envelope, where it can be seen from the ground as the airship passes overhead or appears at an event. The branding is the most obvious feature, but the aircraft is also a working vehicle: it must generate lift, move through the air, and be controlled by its crew.

The term “blimp” is often used casually for any airship, including the familiar Goodyear aircraft. In strict technical usage, however, a blimp is a non-rigid airship: it has no internal frame holding its overall shape. Goodyear’s corporate history describes its modern branded craft as semi-rigid Zeppelin NT airships instead. So “branded blimp” is a useful everyday description, but it does not necessarily identify the aircraft’s engineering category.

Goodyear traces its lighter-than-air work to 1912, and its corporate history says brand awareness was one purpose of its airship program in the 1930s. The aircraft’s role has since included public appearances and aerial event footage. For the company’s historical account, see Goodyear’s history of the Blimp.

How does a blimp stay up?

Helium inside the envelope supplies buoyant lift. Because the helium-filled airship is lighter than the surrounding air it displaces, the air around it supports it upward. The envelope is the large outer covering that contains the lifting gas; it also provides the surface on which the branding is displayed.

Lift alone does not explain the aircraft’s shape. The envelope and, depending on the airship type, internal pressure or a frame help preserve its form. Goodyear’s technical explainer describes the Wingfoot NT as having a pressurized envelope and an upper internal frame. Its 2014 announcement describes the then-new aircraft’s envelope as polyester with a DuPont Tedlar film around a semi-rigid internal structure. Those material details refer to that aircraft and announcement, not every branded airship.

Helium and the envelope do different jobs: helium provides buoyancy, while the envelope contains the gas and forms the aircraft’s outer surface. On a semi-rigid airship such as the Goodyear craft described in the company’s materials, the frame also contributes to the structure. The logo does not create lift; it is carried on the envelope.

For a strict non-rigid blimp, the flexible envelope’s shape is maintained by lifting-gas pressure and air-filled ballonets. A semi-rigid design adds an internal frame to the pressurized envelope. In the Goodyear technical explanation, the Wingfoot NT’s frame is located above the envelope’s main body. These design differences explain why two airships can both be helium-filled but rely on different structures to hold their forms.

What is the difference between a blimp and other airships?

The distinction is how the aircraft holds its shape. Goodyear’s technical explainer groups airships into three structural types:

Type How it holds its shape Key distinction
Non-rigid airship (strict blimp) Lifting-gas pressure and air-filled ballonets; no internal frame The flexible envelope defines the form.
Semi-rigid airship A pressurized envelope plus an internal frame Goodyear’s modern craft are described in this category.
Rigid airship An internal frame The frame holds the form.

Ballonets are air-filled chambers used in non-rigid airships as part of the pressure system that helps maintain the envelope’s form. The useful takeaway is that “airship” is the broader category, while “blimp” is one structural type within it. In everyday speech people may use “blimp” more broadly; in a technical explanation, it is worth naming the distinction.

The three labels are not simply different names for size or advertising role. They describe structure: a non-rigid airship depends on the pressurized envelope, a semi-rigid one combines envelope pressure with a frame, and a rigid one uses an internal frame to hold its form. A company logo can appear on an airship of any category; branding does not determine whether the craft is technically a blimp.

How does a branded blimp move and turn?

Buoyancy keeps an airship aloft, but it does not propel it forward. Engines drive propellers to produce thrust. On the Wingfoot NT, Goodyear lists three four-cylinder engines rated at 200 horsepower each, mounted on the sides and tail. Its technical page says the model can reach up to 73 miles per hour. These are specifications for that Goodyear model, not a general speed or engine count for all airships.

Steering is handled by the tail surfaces. On the Wingfoot NT, the tail fins work together as ruddervators and are controlled electrically through a fly-by-wire system. The pilot’s side-stick commands left-right and up-down movement through those surfaces. Goodyear’s description also notes that the control system coordinates movement with engine thrust.

In practical terms, the aircraft’s jobs are distinct: helium supplies lift, the engines and propellers supply forward thrust, and the tail surfaces guide direction. The pilot uses the controls to command movement, while the Wingfoot NT’s electrical fly-by-wire system relays those commands to its ruddervators. This is a model-specific description, not a claim that every airship uses identical equipment.

In 2014, Goodyear said the new airship could reach 73 mph, compared with about 50 mph for the previous generation at that time. That comparison describes the company’s new aircraft against the generation it was replacing in 2014; it should not be treated as a current comparison across every airship or fleet. The announcement also described computer-controlled avionics coordinating engine thrust and movement. Read the dated specifications in Goodyear’s March 14, 2014 release.

What is a branded blimp used for?

Advertising and public visibility

The most direct purpose of the branding is to put a company identity on a moving display visible from the ground. Unlike a sign fixed at one location, an airship can travel and appear over or near a public event. That visibility is an obvious reason to use an aircraft as a promotional presence, but it does not by itself prove how many people notice the brand or what commercial return the appearance produces.

The envelope’s large visible surface makes the aircraft itself the promotional display. Its public appearances can also associate the brand with an event, but those observations should not be confused with a measured advertising result: the reported material does not establish audience reach, brand lift or return on investment.

Aerial event footage

Goodyear’s corporate history also describes its modern airship as a platform for aerial footage at events. This role combines an event appearance with a practical camera viewpoint above the venue. The footage is a separate use from the advertising surface: the envelope carries the branding, while the aircraft can also support visual coverage from the air.

Appearances depend on the aircraft’s schedule and location, which can change. If you are trying to find a particular appearance, check the company’s official schedule and location page rather than relying on an old event listing.

What published specifications apply to the Goodyear aircraft?

Numbers about an airship need a model and date attached. Goodyear’s 2014 release gives dimensions and passenger capacity for the aircraft it unveiled then; its current technical explainer provides Wingfoot NT engine and speed figures; and a 2020 Goodyear Europe article reports a volume for the European Zeppelin NT. They are not interchangeable measurements or universal specifications.

Figure Aircraft or context Source and date
246 feet long Airship announced by Goodyear in 2014 Goodyear company release, March 14, 2014
Up to 12 passengers Airship announced by Goodyear in 2014 Goodyear company release, March 14, 2014
Three four-cylinder, 200-horsepower engines Wingfoot NT Goodyear Blimp technical page, accessed 2026
Up to 73 miles per hour Wingfoot NT Goodyear Blimp technical page, accessed 2026
8,425 m³ total volume European Zeppelin NT Goodyear Europe, 2020

Length, passenger capacity, engine power, speed and volume describe different aspects of different aircraft. The 8,425 m³ volume figure, for example, is for the European Zeppelin NT reported by Goodyear Europe in 2020; it should not be silently assigned to the 2014 aircraft. Similarly, “up to 12 passengers” is a reported capacity for the 2014 aircraft, not a claim about every Goodyear airship or a promise about a particular flight.

The published figures are useful for scale, but they answer different questions. The 246-foot length describes the aircraft’s dimensions; the capacity figure is an upper passenger count reported for the 2014 model; horsepower describes engine rating; speed is a stated maximum; and volume is a separate measurement. Keep the source and date alongside each number whenever comparing airships.

What does “the Goodyear Blimp is 100” mean?

The Associated Press reported in 2025 on the centennial of the first flight of Pilgrim, which took place on June 3, 1925. That anniversary marks a milestone in Goodyear’s airship history; it does not mean that one aircraft has been flying continuously since 1925. The AP account covers the anniversary and a celebratory flight over Ohio: The Associated Press report on Pilgrim’s first-flight centennial.

How to interpret claims about a particular blimp

  • Check the structural type. A familiar “blimp” may technically be semi-rigid or rigid rather than a strict non-rigid blimp.
  • Keep figures tied to their source and date. Size, capacity, speed and volume are model-specific; a dated announcement is not a specification for every current aircraft.
  • Separate advertising from measurable impact. Branding makes the aircraft a visible promotional display, but visibility alone does not establish audience reach, brand lift or return on investment.
  • Verify schedules close to the event. A schedule and location page is dynamic, so older appearance information may no longer be current.

For the basic engineering overview, Goodyear’s Blimp Science explainer describes airship structure, propulsion and controls. Its Blimp Information page provides the company’s general overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a blimp stay up?

Helium in the envelope provides buoyant lift because the helium-filled aircraft is lighter than the surrounding air it displaces. The envelope contains the gas; pressure, ballonets or an internal frame help preserve the airship’s shape depending on its structural type.

What is inside a blimp?

The envelope contains helium, the lifting gas. A strict non-rigid blimp has no internal frame and uses gas pressure and air-filled ballonets to maintain its form. Goodyear describes the Wingfoot NT as a semi-rigid airship with a pressurized envelope and an upper internal frame.

Is the Goodyear Blimp really a blimp?

In everyday speech, “blimp” is often used for any airship. Technically, a blimp is non-rigid, while Goodyear’s corporate history describes its modern branded Zeppelin NT craft as semi-rigid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How does a blimp move and turn?

Engines drive propellers to produce thrust, and tail control surfaces steer the aircraft. On the Wingfoot NT, Goodyear lists three four-cylinder, 200-horsepower engines and says its tail fins act together as electrically controlled ruddervators.

What is a branded blimp used for?

Its branding makes the envelope a moving promotional display visible from the ground. Goodyear’s corporate history also describes the modern airship’s use as a platform for aerial event footage. These uses do not, by themselves, establish an advertising return or audience measurement.

How can I find out when a Goodyear Blimp will appear nearby?

Check Goodyear’s official schedule and location page close to the event. The page is dynamic, and older appearance listings may no longer be current.

The Bottom Line

A branded blimp pairs a visible company identity with a working lighter-than-air aircraft: helium supplies lift, the envelope and structure preserve shape, engines and propellers provide thrust, and tail surfaces steer. “Blimp” is often used broadly, but Goodyear describes its modern Zeppelin NT craft as semi-rigid airships. Treat specifications as model- and date-specific, and check official schedules for current appearances.
