A bullet heaven game is an action game where you survive crowds of enemies while your character attacks largely automatically and upgrades make you more powerful. Instead of aiming every shot, you usually focus on movement, positioning and choosing how to develop your build during a run. The label describes a broad style, not a fixed set of rules.

How does a bullet heaven game work?

The basic loop is to move through enemy groups, avoid getting overwhelmed and build up your offensive power. Attacks often fire automatically, so the challenge shifts from aiming each shot to choosing where to go and which upgrades will help you handle the threats ahead. Over a run, those upgrades can transform modest attacks into dense, screen-filling offense.

Upgrade systems differ between games. Some offer choices during a run; others combine run-time choices with separate progression systems. Likewise, a game may add manual aiming, co-op, vehicles or RPG mechanics without ceasing to fit the broad label.

How is bullet heaven different from bullet hell?

The simplest contrast is who is filling the screen with attacks. In a familiar bullet hell game, the player’s challenge centers on dodging dense patterns of incoming projectiles. In a bullet heaven game, the player generally unleashes an increasingly large volume of attacks while managing positioning and upgrades.

Steam’s tag description, quoted by PC Gamer on May 18, 2026, calls bullet heaven “the opposite of Bullet Hell” and emphasizes upgrades while automatically attacking hordes of enemies. That is a useful shorthand, not a strict genre rule: individual games can mix automated attacks with manual aiming or other mechanics.

Why do people call them survivors-likes?

The naming is not completely settled. Players and storefronts may use “bullet heaven,” “survivors-like,” “Survivors genre,” “auto shooter” or “auto battler.” A Steam curator collection groups several of these terms together, while a December 2025 PC Gamer report documented the ongoing debate over what to call the games.

“Auto battler” is especially broad and can refer to games that do not follow the bullet-heaven pattern. Treat these terms as useful search phrases rather than perfect synonyms.

Is Vampire Survivors the first bullet heaven game?

No such claim is established by the sources here. GamesRadar+ reported in 2026 that Vampire Survivors popularized the category, while noting it was not the first game in it. It is a useful reference point for the style, but the label covers more than one game or formula.

How can you tell whether a game fits?

Look at the actual controls and progression rather than relying only on the tag. When comparing games, check:

  • Attacks: Does the character attack automatically, or do you also aim and fire manually?
  • Upgrades: Do you choose upgrades during a run, gain them through another system, or use both?
  • Run structure: Is the game built around timed waves, open-ended survival, stages or another format?
  • Progression: What resets after defeat, and what can carry over to later runs?
  • Extra mechanics: Does it add co-op, vehicles, RPG systems or another major twist?

These are useful comparison questions, not requirements every game must meet. The Steam curator collection illustrates how widely games grouped under the label can vary in theme and mechanics.

Where can you find bullet heaven games?

Steam added a “Bullet Heaven” store tag in May 2026, according to PC Gamer. You can use it to discover games on that storefront, but tags and store categories can change, and one platform’s taxonomy does not determine how every player or store uses the term.

Searching for “survivors-like,” “Survivors genre” or “auto shooter” may also surface relevant games. Consider “auto battler” a looser search term, since it can describe other kinds of games as well.
